Hey Jackson. That's a very interesting point you brought up: "a d8/CSB on
the spot recording would be at least if not more historically valuable than
the video footage they have been showing on tv". Living in central NJ, and
having been up to NYC enough times to fall in love with the place, it
certainly took a small part of me away when the whole tragedy happened.
However, I am not replying to this post to express my emotions on the matter
of Tuesday September 11th, but more specifically what you proposed.
First of all, I know that it would be nice to have very high quality audio to
go along with a lot of the video there is out there. But that is just not
possible, especially when the videotaper uses the audio equipment built
into/onto his or her camera. From what I know, videotape's sound quality is
less than that found on higher quality audio-only mediums. So, it would make
sense for reporters and others to have a separate device for recording audio,
to later or simultaneously edit into the video tape. However, the camera,
tripod, batteries, and overall gear is already enough for them to be carrying
around in and out of the vans. I think they are fine without DAT recorders
or whatever else onboard.. at least for the time being.
This post is getting *way* too long but it's worth addressing for the part I
described about how I believe audio-on-video formats is typically of a lesser
quality, regardless of the mics being used. As for your idea, I think it's
absurd, though I did think of it myself. If someone were to go to the
trouble of getting the World Trade Center tragedy (all or part of it) to DAT
or hard disk, from "on the spot", it would likely not be worth it unless they
used higher quality microphones and a decent rig. The thing that the
videotape missed is the lower frequencies and a closeness to the sound, at
least from what I heard. Theoretically, if all was "on-mic" and you had the
right setup, you would hear a realistic earthquake-like sound. **The problem
with your post**: What you would really hear is screaming people, explosive
sounds, crashing concrete and steel, and most likely your own screams. You
and your rig would've been covered in soot, and you may have been killed.
The situation that those videotapers put themselves in is similar to the ones
videotapers have been in in past wars; they usually are injured or even die.
I seriously think that my response to this was a waste of time for everyone
and myself, but I at least know that getting the WTC's fateful end to DAT or
whatever, would've not been worth it. That person recording a video could've
been saving another person's life. Historical documentation is good for
Eqypt, live performances, rollercoasters, etc., but *not* for tragedy and war.
Thanks for reading, and sorry to clog the digest.

I'm trying to scrap some money together for an engagement ring, so I'm deciding to sell some of my beloved gear (2 recording pieces, 1 extra guitar) that I don't have time for anyway, with a 40 hour work-week and school. I'm looking to sell this stuff ASAP so the best, serious offer will most undoubtedly be taken. You pay for item, then I send, then you pay exact cost of shipping (I'll use whatever methond you want to pay for). Here is the gear:
1. Sonic Studios DSM-6/SL mics w/ PA-6LC battery box/bass roll off. Purchased for $575 in Feb 2001. Used about 20 times, still in like-new condition. Offer $450 and I won't wait on anyone else.
2. Sharp MD-R1 MiniDisc recorder (deck, not portable) with optical+coaxial digital in's AND outs (analogs too, of course). Paid $400. Used about 5 times, still in like-new condition. Offer $300 and I won't bother in waiting for other offers.
3. 1998 Epiphone Les Paul Standard, Heritage Cherry Sunburst. With Epiphone hardshell case. Paid $650 for new in 1998. Some minor scratches on the sides. Gotoh locking machine heads, graphite nut, brand new bridge assembly and saddles. Offer $500 and I won't be waiting for anyone else.
Thanks guys!
Chris

Hello All.
I hate to post this here, but I'm starting to move towards last resorts.
I'm just wondering if anybody who happened to be at this show may have
picked up my Active Oade 7-Pin. The only patcher I had out of me said his
digi barrel splitter was not there when he got home, so I guess that may
still be attached. I was running Neumann u89's on a mic stand with
Christmas lights if that helps. Attempted contact with the 40 Watt Club
only gets me a recording. It sure would be a shame if somebody out there
stole it. It sucks because I have no means of doing digital transfers now.
I've got a great AUD and a great DSBD of the show which I'd really like to
Matrix, but can't. Oh well. Hopefully one of ya'll picked it up. If not, I
guess that's gonna mean some extra bucks that I have to scrounge up.
Hope everyone is safe and well!
-Bryan
