From: henry@dmbtapers.org Subject: 4326RP Archive DDS drive firmware... Date: 20 Sep 2001 17:26:06 -0700 Hey all, I know this has been tossed around for years (and I know you hate reading that line to start an e-mail :), but there is a dillema. I'm trying to update the firmware on my DDS 4326RP Archive drive and the .hex file that is commonly found at http://datdrive.homepage.com/ isn't there because the site is now down for good. I've got flashdat.exe and v5acb-15.hex, but when I run that I get the flashdat to read the SCSI ID and tell me it's located the DDS drive, but then I get the error message, "no tape drive found." I know I need a different firmware .hex file, but all of them seem to have vanished off the face of the internet. I know of 4 fellow DMB tapers with the same problem occuring in the last few days. What to do? H! ===================================================== http://www.grahamfxmm.clara.net/celebs/nicole/001.jpg Ohhhhh, to be the father of her children... Damn you Liam, DAMN YOU!

From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: taping late-night shows on NBC Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 18:57:09 -0700 A note to the person looking for CSN on Leno and others... Starting this week, NBC has been showing repeats of Leno and Conan on the *same* night as they original aired, approx 90 minutes later (two hours on Friday). Previously, these repeats were one week after the original airdate and perhaps they will go back to this format soon. So, if you ever miss anything on these shows, currently you can get it later the same night, and usually, you can get it exactly one week later. --Gary

I'm looking to sell this stuff ASAP so the best, serious offer will most undoubtedly be taken. You pay for item, then I send, then you pay exact cost of shipping (I'll use whatever methond you want to pay for). Here is the gear: 1. Sonic Studios DSM-6/SL mics w/ PA-6LC battery box/bass roll off. Purchased for $575 in Feb 2001. Used about 20 times, still in like-new condition. Offer $450 and I won't wait on anyone else. >> With all that's going on, it's easy to forget or not double check details. Chris's mics are DSM-6/L SER#2932 ($350 new; a Rock/Pop mic model). The PA-6LC (mic powering 85 cycle bass filter) costs $125 new so he actually paid $475 total. If this 'stealth' (or can be HRTF baffled stand mounted) stereo mic + bass filter matches your recording needs, then congratulate Chris on his engagement and make him an offer he can't refuse! From: "Alisdair Menzies" <alimenzies@hotmail.com> Subject: DPA 4061 Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 13:21:11 +0200 Greetings, everyone, I've just managed to pick up a pair of dirt-cheap DPA 4061's. Since I don't know much about this microphone (apart from the great quality of its recordings), I have a few questions to ask the more experienced users out there. First of all, these microphones came without the microdot connectors and without their battery box. Would it be possible to do without the DPA battery box and use the Sound professionals battery box that I have? If that is the case, I'd have to connect the microphones to a standard minijack. If so what are the connections that I have to make (i.e. what wires go where?). Secondly, do you have any advice concerning the use of these particular microphones? What options do you use while stealthing with them (Oh, yes, I forgot to tell you, I'll mostly be doing stealth). Many thanks, Alisdair http://membres.tripod.fr/Alisdair_Menzies/trade.html _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

From: "bocabob" <bocabob@bellsouth.net> Subject: ISO Old Trades Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 10:16:29 -0400 Sorry to bother all....but as most that I have traded w/ in the last month or so already know...My New computer has been acting up! Well last week I went and bought 2-60g HD, so that I had something to backup my 60g HD that was in my system, so that when they replaced the board that was incompatible w/ my new 1.4g system...I wanted a clean bootable hard drive..but didn't have the time to back up my info..I was informed that the tech that was working on my system would backup the whole drive to the new striped Raid array that I installed, then wipe out the old drive and re-install just my programs on the clean drive...well to cut to the chase...they only backed up a portion of the drive..leaving out the most important stuff i.e....My outlook files, my tape tracker files, even my acct receivable files. What I'm asking for here is that anyone that has sent me music, say since June or so...can you send me a copy of the info as to what you had sent so maybe I can reassemble my tape list. I do have a list of most of what I have, but that is only in the HTML format that is listed on my online tape list...so I don't have who I received them from or what the source was! Now to compound the issue...I also had a bunch of trades that I had setup, and with the troubles that I had with this confounded box, moving and work...I was getting behind on the trades...so anyone that I owe music to please get a hold of me...so I can get back in gear! Everything is running at high gear on my system now, I just need to reconstruct and organize my measly collection ;) Please be patient and much love to all during this difficult time in everyone's life. From: "Ryan Haskell" <ryan_haskell@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Historical documentation of disaster Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 14:17:01 -0400 I'm not sure I agree here.... As a matter of fact, no, videotape's sound quality is not necessarily less than that found on higher quality audio-only mediums (in reference to DAT at least). True, your standard consumer VHS tape ain't gonna compare, but you may be forgetting that most professional news crews and videographers use much better. Professional formats like DVCPRO offer far superior video resolution, as well as 44.1/16 and 48/16 digital audio recording. So with the right gear, you can get at least the same level of quality you'd get out of a D8. To the point of recording "screaming people", I don't think that's what was intended. There was no mention of being there at the moment of impact, just in the aftermath. The sounds of rescue workers and sirens and confusion would prevail, and the silence of the rubble would be evident, not "crashing concrete". Finally, I must say I'm rather disturbed by the remark about historical documentation not being sutiable for war. Are you serious? Shall we not document our tragedies and wars, so that others cannot learn from the mistakes of the past? In fact, I'd say that war is one of the most important things to document any way you can. If more people understood and remembered the horrors and hardships of our previous wars, perhaps we'd be a little less anxious to get into another one. Sorry for the long post, Ryan >First of all, I know that it would be nice to have very high quality audio >to >go along with a lot of the video there is out there. But that is just not >possible, especially when the videotaper uses the audio equipment built >into/onto his or her camera. So, it would >make >sense for reporters and others to have a separate device for recording >audio, >to later or simultaneously edit into the video tape. > >What you would really hear is screaming people, explosive >sounds, crashing concrete and steel, and most likely your own screams. You >and your rig would've been covered in soot, and you may have been killed. >The situation that those videotapers put themselves in is similar to the >ones >videotapers have been in in past wars; they usually are injured or even >die. >Historical documentation is good for >Eqypt, live performances, rollercoasters, etc., but *not* for tragedy and >war. > >Thanks for reading, and sorry to clog the digest. > > -Tom _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
