From: Robert O'Haire <plummer@nyc.rr.com> Subject: security Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 18:43:59 -0400 For what it's worth... Having just been in Amsterdam taping shows in Holland and Paris prior to 9/11...I returned on the 18th traveling with video camera, lots of wires, my Schoeps/MP2/micstand/tripod/lithiums and 2 portable DAT decks in a pelican case. The security is extensive (2-3 separate checks) and the x-ray units are set to full blast...bags appear to stay in the scanner for up to 2 minutes each...hence the long lines at check-in. But I was not asked to open any of my bags once..even at JFK when I arrived in NYC..where searching of bags is normal if you are declaring items or have long hair or are traveling from Amsterdam. As in any case never joke about security issues anywhere near a plane and you should have a great flight. Robert downtown NYC From: "Stanley W. From: "John Book" <johnbook@yadig.com> Subject: Looking for Ozomatli Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 16:14:34 -0700 Hello once again. I am looking for any and all Ozomatli shows, including future shows. Some of you have helped me in obtaining a few, so I want to thank everyone who has written in. All shows that I receive will be forwarded to Ozo member Ulises Bella for their archives. The band are now on the "bands that allow taping" list, so I hope to see more shows documented in the future. A lot of people have been asking me about Ozo's taping policy, and getting board patches. The band *USED* to allow BA before, but not sure now. If I get a response, I'll let everyone know. If you head to the venue before the show, ask for their soundman, Ricky. Or talk to Wil-Dog or Uli (ooh-lee). These mics are in excellent condition and are just excellent mics all around. The only thing they dont come with are the tubes that are used to carry them, but I made a case that protects them much better than the tubes that is included. Also included is windscreens and a 20' pair of XLR cables for no extra charge. I am looking to get 700 for everything, but if you are TRULY interested email me and we can talk. -I also have a pair of AT933's that are mounted in Croakies, with an attached batter box that has selectable bass roll off. Also included is an adapter to go into any preamp that has XLR inputs, and a 20dB pad incase your levels are too hot for the pre. I am looking to get 200 for this package, but the same goes as above. If you are TRULY interested email me off list and we can talk. THANKS YALL!! No "rounding" will take place in this case as well and I can't see why this is wrong. Unfortunately, using cooledit for this task does not seem to work well. If I multiply by, say 400% and then by 25% I don't get the same bits as in the original file. What software should be used? <<< I believe Samplitude 2496 has an option for *2 and /2. While you are correct that any integer *multiplier* (the same cannot be guaranteed for integer divisors) should not cause any additional error, I know of no software that will allow you to specify an integer multiplier. Also given that every *2 gives *approximiately* 6dB increase (I think it's actually more like 6.02dB), I can't imagine that you'd regularly need anything more than that for a level adjustment anyway. I suspect that perhaps Cooledit doesn't start with the integer number, but rather treats 200% as the addition of 6dB, and performs that calculation accordingly, resulting in the inaccuracies you describe. But I'm pretty sure (admittedly I haven't done the full test myself) that Samplitude's *2 and /2 functions just rolls the bits to the right and left respectively. From: Clark Guy <guy.clark@sbt.siemens.com> Subject: re:contact or surveillance mics Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 07:53:29 -0500 HI, Robert! One thing that comes to mind is the use of an Infra Red wireless transmitter/receiver. There are such devices made rather inexpensively for coupling the sound from a stereo or TV to headphones without using wires. The sound quality can be suprisingly good, considering the low cost (I paid less than US$40 for my old Memorex brand IR system, ten years ago). You'll need to amplify the signal from the mics, but a cheap old cassette recorder that has mic inputs would work for this purpose. Duct tape the transmitter to an exterior window and the receiver on the inside of the window where the best signal is received, and connect the receiver to your sound system in the gallery. Be sure to protect all electronic stuff that is outside from the weather!!!! You may have some logistical problems with this, particularly if your gallery isn't on the ground floor!, but perhaps this will spark your creativitiy!!! Hope this helps! So, I'm wondering how I can accomplish that. I thought about some contact mics on windows, but I'm not sure if that would work. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get sound from "outside" into "inside?" I'd really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks - Robert
From: Kris Schuett <KSchuett@envstd.com> Subject: Zoltrix Nightingale 6.0 and Windoze ME? Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 09:16:08 -0400 Been thinking about ordering the new Nightingale 6.0 card (digi coax and optical Ins for $50?!) but was curious if anyone has this one up and running with Windoze ME? It says on the web page that 95/98/2000 are supported but is mum on ME. Two emails to the company regarding OS queries have gone unanswered (hmm, this may not bode well for tech support in the future, eh?) so, I thought I check with y'all. Also, any users with good/bad comments about the card in general? Read the reviews on a few web pages but I don't really give a hoot about how well it reproduces whatever grunt/blaster game sound compared to competitor card X - I just want an affordable way to get the music on my DATs into my computer and onto discs. My other choice seems to come down to the Midiman options but I'd have to grab the coax/optical to boot (roughly $200 - a darned sight more than the Zoltrix option...) Anywho, help/guidance from those in the know is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Tof BWT: Remunerated as soon as I get this whole I/O quagmire straightened out.

It has 54 hours of use on the heads. 25 recording 29 playback. It has never needed servicing and was always babied. However, lately it has had unloading problems. I am going to be sending the deck in to Paul at Pro Digital so 1) the unloading problem can be fixed and 2) I can have a professional inspect the deck so I can say the deck has a "clean bill of health" when I send it to whomever I send it to. I would prefer to work with someone who could offer the same sort of assurance. I am also willing to sell it for $440. I have an opportunity to buy a refirbed D8 from a Sony outlet for that price which I think is fair. What has your experience been with > it? actually, it is fairly easy to add a dc input option to this unit. ( i also seem to recall a dc power option offered by spirit/soundcraftsman as well) i added a switchcraft mini xlr connecter to the top panel next to the ac input. i use a 12vlead acid battery to feed a +/-15v dc/dc converter which is then plugged into the mixer. the dc/dc converter can be found a couple of different ways. last time i ran this was phil and friends at the la greek and we did a 3 mic mix. my beefs with the unit are: if you use the headphones, you lose one of only two stereo outputs, and i wish it had inserts on the channels (although i can say i would rarely use them). the mixer doesn't weigh very much and while it may not have as perfect a set of mic pre's as we would all like, i have no complaints.
