Lead bags are to protect film from X-Rays. They will not protect
tapes from magnetic fields!
There was talk about two years back of a new generation of bomb-
sensing x-ray machines that had a much higher likelihood of
damaging film.
The best thing to do with film or tape, if you're concerned, is put it
in a clear plastic bag, so you can easily take it out of the luggage
and show it to the security personel, then carry the item around the
machine (or ask security to carry it around).

Hi everyone,
i made a spectacular soundboard recording of Pedro The Lion last night at
Emo's here in austin. The band played 7 songs that are going to be on their
next record (coming out in march), and also joked around a lot and answered
questions from the crowd.
it was an all around great show. the recording is flawless as far as i can
tell (i would rate the quality a 9.8/10). it is complete and all of the
levels sound right (but the vocals are a little loud in some parts ... which
i guess is to be expected from club board recordings). i taped it
Soundboard > Sony MZ-R70.
I just figured i would give the band's fans a chance to pick up a copy of
this recording.

Due to upgrade I am looking to sell my TASCAM playback deck. Originally
purchased from Terrapin 2 years ago and has been very lovingly handled.
Works flawlessly. Very low hours, only used as play-back deck, never used
to record. It is in 'like-new' condition and I have original box, all
manuals, remote, head-cleaner, etc. I am asking $450 and I will cover the
shipping.

Hey now, wait a minute! Before you buy that Waveterminal U2A, you should
know that IMO,
Egosys is playing an interesting and twisted specification game with that
product.
Yes, it has 24-bit A/D, but *no*, it does not pass the full 24-bit word
through the interface and onto your hard drive.
Furthermore, it truncates the least significant 8 bits without any dither
or noise shaping.
Neither does it play back 24-bit files in true 24-bits. If you ask me,
their claims of 100dB A/D and 110dB D/A of dynamic range are a total lie,
as 16-bits only affords 96dB of dynamic range.
So if you're looking for a true 24-bit USB soundcard solution, the
Waveterminal U2A is *not* it.
Ego-sys's link is below, see for yourself the line that says "16-bit record
& playback resolution" right at the top of their list.
http://egosys.net/eng/product/products/wt_u2a/WTU2A.html
See the 24-bit Field Recording FAQ at http://www.24bitfaq.org for more real
info on 24-bit recording and interface options.
And if anyone has anything to say specifically on the use of Macs for
24-bit field recording, I'd love to hear it, as the FAQ is admittedly a
little light on Mac info.

There are Explosive Detection Systems that are used in some airports for
looking in luggage. Check out:
http://www.invision-tech.com/products
These are used for checked luggage. They say "...system uses the same
core technology, that derived from medical computed tomography (CT)".
Click on 'film safety' and they have a statement in there regarding film
and other media. Sounds like having it x-rayed or hand checked carry-on
is the way to go.

These are brand new pair of switchable 15 db pads custom made by Klay
Anderson. The units have female XLR connectors at the switches and 2 feet of
Mogami cable. At the end of the cable are Neutrik gold plated male
connectors. I had these made to go with a Beyerdynamic MV100. I got a
Sonosax while they were being made, so I now do not need them. These are
rare birds indeed:) Buyer to pay with postal money order, cashiers check or
personal check. Personal checks will have to clear prior to shipping. Buyer
adds 10 dollars for shipping and insurance. Ship USPS priority mail.
Canadian buyers welcome, but Canadians are responsible for extra shipping
costs. These are being sold as a pair. cheers:)

Hello,
last June I was flying from London Heathrow to my hometown of Stuttgart,
Germany. I had taped a show in London and was afraid it might get damaged by
the x-ray machine. So, I showed the security officer the tape and he told me
to put it in my hand baggage that was to be x-rayed. I told him it was
magnetic media and that I was afraid it could get damaged. He told me that
nothing could happen since the x-ray machines do not use any kind of
magnetism (which is the only way to damage such a tape).
Well, the x-rayed tape still plays fine...

Dan, [RE: Samplitude's *2 and /2]
I checked in the Samplitude help and this is different from what we are
thinking.
The (*2) inserts an interpolated sample in-between two individual
samples. This results in a drop in pitch. So this is a way to increase
the number of samples, not to increase the loudness.
[RE: Javi's comment]
Javi, I think makes a very good point here that a recording might fare
well when applying a straight factor of two to the samples. If you can't
locate software to do this I can set something up for you. (I can setup
Wavscript to do an optional bit-shift in the output file.) You also
might want to check out SOX to see what normalization options it has.

Probably a good deal. I don't know about their cable and I prefer
gold plated Neutrik connectors. I usually get my XLR cable from
Electronic City. They have multicolored Canare=AE fully shielded
reinforced 4 conductor XLR cable for $0.55/foot:
=3D23>
and Neutrik=AE connectors for $3.35 (Male gold-pin) and 3.70 (Female
gold-pin):
=3D34>
<http://www.electroniccity.com/shopping/pricelist.asp?prid=3D235&brandinc=
=3D34>
I've never had a problem with the cables I've made, but YMMV and you do
need some decent soldering skills to keep everything strong and secure.
It may be worth the extra cost to have them make the cables.

Gordon, I'm interested in your Wavscript program... Perhaps there is
something you can do...
One possibility is the bit-shift function you mentioned. That would be
cool...
Another might be integer-based normalization. If you could analyze a file,
find it's largest peak,
and add the integer difference between the largest peak and FSD to every
sample,
I'd guess this would be a great way to normalize, right?
Technically speaking I'd guess you'd have to deal with signed numbers, but
you get the idea.
I wonder if that would result in truly linear normalization without the
risk of introducing error throught the process...
