OK, I don't know the setlist, but if you like Miles Davis or John
Coltrane, you definitely want to catch Herbie Hancock's 'Directions In
Music.' The songs are re-arranged but true to the spirit of their
music. The second song has the bass line from 'So What' while the melody
was from a John Coltrane song - wild. Herbie spoke a little bit aobut the
recent events and how music has come to mean more to him. All-in-all not
your typical Herbie show, and that's exactly why you will want this
one. Each of the musicians in this band is a technical genius - check it
out to see what you think.
I didn't have ANY problem stealthing although the tickets made no mention
of 'no unauthorized taping.'
I am pleased with the results although the beginning of the first tune is
cut due to a whacky deck problem.
Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Brian Blade, Ron Hargove and ... (I forget
the bass players name)

Knoxville, TN - Tennessee Theatre
(2 discs)
source: Af:D,CD (taped from the balcony rail, technically a FOB because the
rail is in front of the soundboard.)
rig info: MTG SMS2000/M210> SX-M2>SBM1>D8 (Yes, I taped this one too)
conversion: (Tascam DA20mkii (44k)-> Tascam CDRW700 (44k))
For those interested in a trade, please send your link or list and I will
get back with you. If you don't hear back, you didn't make this round.
P.S. For those thinking about going and taping, DO SO, and don't be afraid
to crank your levels up, their music is dynamic but max volume is rather
low. Good luck.

People ask about this every few weeks. With Windows 98-type
system, getting the output to be flawless is tricky. For this and
other reasons, DAT>PC>DAT copying has never been accepted by
DAT-Heads as a good way to copy tapes (to the best of my
knowledge).
If you can get the music into your PC, just make CDRs for trading.
These are more universally accepted, easier to copy, easier to
play, and cheaper. The only drawback is the 80-minute cuts. I
admit DAT was better in this respect. But as a distribution
medium, CDR is really where it's at right now.
One more thing - as far as longevity and possible errors/digi-noise,
I think both DAT and CDR are suspect but in different ways. In a
few more years we'll know which was more of a disaster to archive
music on :-)

The Cowboy Junkies are taper-friendly. They allow FOB taping. You can use
your stand. They don't allow soundboard patches. If you tape, please send
a copy of your tape to the band's archivist, Candace Horgan. I don't have
her email handy, but I think she's posted recently to the list, so you can
find it in the DAT-heads archives.

Enough time has passed since the tragedy, that I think we can
again look up into the skies and watch one of mankind's greatest
achievements, the International Space Station - ISS, also known
as Space Station Alpha.
I prepared an 8-CD set (now 10) in SVCD format Video Discs,
documenting Space Shuttle mission STS-104 to travel to the space
station and install a new docking compartment, which allows
space station residents to step outside anytime without the need
for a shuttle.
These discs are art, science, and adventure all in one.
SVCD discs are video discs recorded on regular CDRs. They are
like VCDs only better in quality, but, for the most part, only
Chinese-built DVD players like the Apex will play them. However,
these discs also have a "PC-Autorun" feature which will let you
play them on any recent PC with a CD drive, Windows or Linux.
Sorry, I haven't been able to locate any Mac playback software,
though I'm sure it must exist. There is also a database at
www.vcdhelper.com which can help you tell if your brand DVD
player will play these discs (click on "DVD Players"; look in the
chart for SVCD *without* a line through it).
You can read the original announcement with more description of
the discs in the Dat-Head's digest #982. If you already signed up
for the tree, don't worry, I still have your info.
Here's a little about the two new discs. I'm most excited about a
music plus Earth views disc I made, tentatively titled "Apocalypse
NASA". It's a trilogy of Earth, Sky, and Sun, featuring Pink Floyd's
"Atom Heart Mother" (from the 1970 BBC recording), Yes's
"Starship Troopers," and "Silvery Rain" by British singer Cliff
Richards.
The 10th disc will probably be one I made tonight: the latest
footage from the International Space Station, including great
footage of the automatic docking of an unmanned Russian
spacecraft, and then a floating DV-camcorder tour inside the newly
delivered module and other nooks and crannies of the space
station.
And on the audio side, for the first time we get some idea of the
noise inside the station, as a mic was left open for narration during
the playback of this tour DV. (Yes, space craft are noisy on the
inside).
Here's a little inside information: Guess what the "bridge" of a real
space station looks like? Two laptop computers. Here's another.
One astronaut said tonight, "I haven't sat down in 7 weeks".
Anyway, if you want to get involved in this informal tree, please
send a message to gdavis@loop.com with the subject
NASA Branch n - where "n" is the number of sets you are willing
to make, or
NASA Leaf - if you can't copy.
These discs can be copied on EZCDcreator 4 or above or Nero 4 or
above, but not CDRWIN. They are 80 minute discs and I
recommend "Fuji Film," Sony, or other high-quality discs.
It's reality TV that's out of this world!

If you are outside the U.S., please also put your country in the
subject of the message.
In the body of the message, you can tell me what DVD player you
have, and I'll tell you if I know if it will play SVCDs.
Also, SVCDs can generally be played back on PAL (European) as
well as NTSC (US/Japan) systems. No conversion needed!

In today's edition of the VA Tech newspaper they made a reference to taping
the upcoming SCI show. They said that taping IS allowed; however, you will be
asked to empty out any BIG bags and will not be allowed to bring these big
bags in. Although the paper said that they would be strict about it, here is
my story from the Trey show at Burrus last February. I did not get searched
and the security guy that was suppose to search me(who wasn't a college aged
student) said, "pot's okay to bring in, but nothing else." Not to mention the
fact that a nitrous tank was on the front lawn. So, we'll see how the handle
things in recent light of events. Also, anybody that plans on taping this
show please get in touch with me.

Have been meaning to post about finding a copy of the Chicago performance
from her newest tour for my Mother and Sister and was curious if anyone out
there has taped the Chicago show or as a second resort-any shows from the
tour (since the setlist has stayed pretty much the same except when Sheryl
Crow isn't there). If anyone has a sweet in-house fm or nice audience they
could share, I have taped on HI-FI VHS every appearance she has made for
this album and I'll work from memory real quick what I have on tape for
trade...
Tape I
Much More Music Speakeasy (Documentary and Interview) 52 minutes 5/3/01
Rosie O Donnell 5/06/01 early about 30 minutes (interview and 2 songs)
David Letterman 5/06/01 late 15 minutes (1 song and interview)
VH1 Rock across America 7-20-01 PNC Banks Center (15 minutes interview and
clips from show)
Jay Leno with Sheryl Crow 8/??/01 (have date but can't remember) 1 song with
interview
Sorcerer video with Sheryl Crow (8/??/01) 5 minutes
My Tape II has Entertainment Tonight clips from the ABC Downtown feature on
her recently followed by the Downtown feature. Downtown was around 15
minutes long.
All commercials were edited out and are all masters. I could run a 1st gen
for whomever can help me out so I can turn on my Mom and Sis.
Any takers?
Peace,
John Flannery

On my system, I have to switch the soundcard from internal clock to external
sp/dif clock when recording in order to get a signal into the PC. When
going back to sp/dif out, you need to change the clocking back to internal.
Then you can hear the wav file via the PC, and also output it to the sp/dif
output of the soundcard.
May not be the same for your setup, but it may be a clue.

WHOA !
Let's see:
You get by the metal detector and are pegged by an undercover security
person, who sees
a suspicious square electronic device being set-up.
He calls on his radio for an evacuation of the show, jumps over 20
people, and tackles you,
smashing the deck in the process.
Everyone is running out of the door, the band is pissed, and you end up
deckless and
in jail because IT AIN'T NO JOKE.
6 THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE DEAD.
Don't assume that you would get a slap on the wrist for violating the
venue's security
in times like these. There may very well be serious penalties for doing
it.
It is wrong to seek ways which make the larger population less safe so
that we can tape.
Only bring in what they allow and be upfront about it. Taping bands will
make provisions for
gear inspection. Non-taping bands deserve to have their rights
respected.
People who "just want to see the show" deserve to be safe in doing so.
Just My $0.02, but give it some thought. It's easy to be focused on one
thing that's important to
us and miss the bigger picture sometimes.
