I know the unit supports from 6.8v to 24v. I measured the voltage at the ecocharge and is around 6.4v. I was going down to get the power connectors to try but thought i'd ask first. Thanks Dan

Are you running the Zoltrix SPDIF ? Coax or optical ? If coax, was it straight out of a 5volt (Sony) interface? Is it working and how many hours of use? There's been a lot of talk about spdif being 0.5 to 5.0 vdc, though the standards are really tighter. Zoltrix (or a newsgroup that covers the Nightingale card) says that it will work 0.5 to 5.0 volts, I wondered if it might have some effect. BTW, the latest techie word is to avoid Nightingale series for analog for critical recording because the op-amps on board are noisier than most. Has anyone worked up a modification for this? I'm sure that tuning discrete components could only help any mass-production card. Cheers, -Bob

From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: ?? about CD list info Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 09:56:08 -0500 I like to keep a record of transfer lineage for things that I master on DAT and convert to SHN. On a SHN data disc there is plenty of space for a small text file containing the info about recording situation, mastering, transfer and or conversion and even a track list if known. I find that this is critical information for determining the best possible source for a show. I don't ususally trade audio CD-R because they're not what I like to copy from. I have resumed trading DAT's because I can get unconverted material. by the way, I use a Mac, but I burn data discs in the ISO format with joliet naming so they're cross-platform compatible. I have not been very meticulous about keeping records of digital transfers from one DAT to another, however. I know there are uncorrectible errors, and they are not really detectible or audible, but many DAT's aren't labelled very well to begin with, so you take what info you can! I'm interested to hear what other folks keep for their data. My impression is that the master should be labelled completely, and if someone wants to make a copy they should have all the info available, even if they don't care, just so someone down the line can tell what is on the tape. -tom > > anyway, i've been trying to keep my CDR archiving info "clean" by > requesting > what i've been calling conversion lineage (ie. how the music on the dat > got > to the CDR (including machines and software)). The Denecke PS-2 lights the LED at about 6.2V on mine (YMMV) so the 6V gel cells keep it supplied for a good long time (they only draw about 40 mA with my mics--again, YMMV). Beware though. Don't feed anything else from the same cell. I got a very light hum from my rig (only noticable with total quiet and the gain cranked to 10) with either my SBM-1 or my PCM-M1 powered from the same cell. I have two of the 6V 7.5AH gel cells and originally ran them in parallel, but since discovering this hum (I discovered it long before I ever attempted a recording with this setup thankfully) I run the two cells separately with one dedicated to the PS-2. The hum seems to be coming from the SBM-1. I get it with just the M1 plugged in, but it is only noticable on an o-scope (for anyone who cares about the technical details, its about 8mV at 100 Hz with a roughly triangle waveform--if I'm reading my o-scope correctly). I've done a lot of transfers to/from the nightingale (and the midiman 2448) from a plain non-active Sony 7-pin and to/from my denon DTR-80P and Sharp Pro deck (SX D200) with no bit-rot whenever I've checked. The CMI 8738 S/PDIF is pretty damn good and pretty good at cleaning up sloppy signals. > > BTW, the latest techie word is to avoid Nightingale series for analog > for critical recording > because the op-amps on board are noisier than most. Has anyone worked up > a modification > for this? I'm sure that tuning discrete components could only help any > mass-production card. This would be nearly impossible. The CMI 8738 is a one-chip solution. All the sub-process sections are within the chip. Even so, the DA/AD converters on this chip leave a lot to be desired. No, the best role of this card is straight digital transfers. If you want a good AD/DA, get a cheap SB/Live Value. Even buying both, your better off for less bucks than a god pro card. I wish someone would build a good all-around card for us dat-heads, but I'm reminded of a sign that used to hang in our QC lab: You can have it done cheap. You can have it done fast. You can have it done right. Pick any two. -- Wayne D. Most DAT decks don't correctly transfer start IDs from a CD player digital output. Something about "Q-Codes." Of my 5 different decks (Panasonic SV3800, Fostex D5, Sony 75ES, Sony D3, Sony D100), only the D5 does this correctly. IIRC, it's been awhile since I did it. -Jeff Lester
