Amen. No taper is completely pure. There ought to be an expression
involving a kettle and a pot here, but none comes to mind.

It has worked for me a couple times. Let bidders know that the seller
simply traded for what he/she is selling, and that you'll offer it up and
probably know others who will, too.

A great pair of monitors are the Spirit Absolute 2's or 4P's. They're made by a division of
Soundcraft, a company based in the UK, so they're not very well known in the US. It's too bad,
because the Absolute's are easily the best low to mid-range monitors I've ever heard.
I compared them to a wide range of other brands before buying a pair of Absolute 2's, including
JBL, Yamaha, Genelec, Event, Tannoy, Roland, Hafler, and a few others I can't remember, but none of
their models under $600 sounded as good. Of course, the 1029a system blew them all away, but
that's over $1200.
I got my pair for $300, which is great price for such awesome sounding monitors(nice looking too).
That's for the passive model, but I doubt the powered Absolute 4P's are much more. You might want
to pick up a subwoofer also, so that'll add to the cost, but not by much.
Though Absolute's aren't common, they're fairly easy to find, you just need to email their US sales
director at tder@harman.com and ask him where the nearest store to you that carries Absolute's is.
Here's the Spirit products page for more info:

"Interesting how so many of the DAT-Heads types conveniently forget that it
isn't relevant if money changes hand - stealth taping and trading
unauthorized recordings is illegal, period. Involving the RIAA in any
degree is sort of, well, stupid."
I must agree totally with Geetarz on this subject. The suggestion to report
this to the RIAA is really taking a holier than thou stance, since the
nature of the DAT list itself is stealth recording. What difference does it
make to the artist whether you are trading a tape without permission or
selling a tape without permission? Either way you are gaining at the
artist's expense. Check that out with any professional musician and I'm
sure most if not all wouldn't differentiate between trading or selling. I
started trading tapes way back, in fact in the days of 7" reels. I've never
sold any, but I think it's a pretty fine line we walk. Basically I say just
ignore the guy, unless your glass house is shatterproof.

I recently posted a notice for a handful of Sony M1s that I was selling, and
I am happy to say that they all went to fellow DAT-Heads, (who are hopefully
all very happy!!). I have just gotten my hands on a number of select, VERY
SLIGHTLY used D8s, as well as 1 D7. They were all used for a medical study,
and according to the medical company, should have an average of 20hours or
less use. I have inspected them all, and tested them as best I could-- by
playing, rewinding, and fast-forwarding a 90m tape with the light on,
looking for any possible 'resets', as well as playing and recording to and
from each deck, connecting it to my Sony A8 home unit, and checking the
resulting tape. As far as I can tell, the decks are in excellent condition--
one or two may have a minor scratch on the glass, but most are good as new.
All have a Sony AC power supply (wall wart) and a sealed Sony cleaning tape.
Some have cases, some dont. I am asking $400 each for the D8s, shipped-- US
only. I have already sold 5 of them without even trying, so I am expecting
them to go quickly. As for the D7... it's in excellent condition, same as
the D8s... but make me a reasonable offer and its yours!
I will be putting an additional D7 on eBay, in their "Auction For America",
with 100% of the proceeds going towards the Sept. 11th Fund.

hi, i've got a small handful of extra CDrs sitting around that I'd like
to find a good home for. They're a mixed bag of Imation, TDK, and
unbranded silver/blue disks. These were all either burned for trades
that didn't go down, burned by friends for me but I already had the
show, etc. There's nothing 'wrong' with them. :-)
I'd like all seven of these discs to go to the same person. Please
contact me if you'd like them and will be able to send 7 blank 16x
certified branded (Maxell, TDK, Mitsui, etc) CDrs to me *within 3 days*!
Do not email me if you doubt your ability to finish your half of this
deal very quickly!!! If I don't get back to you, sorry, they're already
claimed.
Here's what you get:
a whole lot of alt-rock:
Radiohead 5-28-01 Vaison La Romaine France 300k webcast feed (from SBD)
2 CDrs
Radiohead 9-16-00 Nijmegen Holland dFM 2 CDrs
Sonic Youth & Side Projects 8-5-00 Carrboro NC dAUD (mics unknown, but
sounds great) 2 CDrs
and one classic:
Ray Charles 10-22-61 Palais des Sports Paris FM 1 CDr

Without more info and being there, best I could do is guess.
Although this is more typical with other portables that with
the DA-P1, it sounds like you may have gone into a record
mode before there was a digital signal to which to synch.
In general, all tapers geeting a digital feed should always
make sure that the ADC or deck in front of you is showing
good levels before hitting record on your deck. Also it is
very common for levels to look ok before a band comes on
and then brickwall when the SPL in the room is much higher.
peace, further...

Subject: Anyone taping Sam Phillips?/Acid Test Reels CD#5 soon
Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 21:02:29 EDT
Hi all,
If anyone manages to record Sam Phillips at The Somerville Theater in
Somerville, MA tomorrow night, please get in touch. Ditto on any other Sam
Phillips shows on her brief current tour. Many masters and clones from her
previous tours to trade.
Also, for those enjoying the Acid Test Reels 4CD set I assembled earlier
this year, I'll be mastering the 5th suppliment disc this weekend and will
get it to a few key people who have already volunteered to spread it around.
It will contain the missing Watts Acid Test sequence and an expanded version
of the Pico Acid Test, thus completing everything Acid Test related in The
Compendium (and more).
Stay tuned, Alan
