Kelly" Subject: Unidecker ISO D7/8, 7-pin cable question Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 14:26:24 -0400 Hey all, Well that first month with my first deck went by fast and I'm hungry for more. Found a good deal on a DA-20 mkII and got several B&Ps rolling so I could get a taste. Now I'm ready to start patching and duping! I'm looking for anyone who wants to unload a used D7/8. If you have a 7-pin digi i/o cable as well that'd be excellent. BTW, question about those 7-pin cables- I have seen several variations out there, what does everyone recommend? These are the three I'm looking at: Oade Bros Passive (DIGI I/O-P, $110) and Active (DIGI I/O-A, $150) http://www.oade.com/dat/audiocenter/oadecable.html Core Sounds' 7-Pin-Coax-I/O Cable ($50) http://www.core-sound.com/7-pin-coax-blurb.html What are the pro's and con's of each? Core Sounds' price seems much more reasonable, but how does it perform? Would like to hear anyone's field experience with these. Thanks a bunch! Brian ** Anyone here taping the cheese show in Blacksburg, VA on 11/5? Thanks for the bandwidth, here's my tax- I'll take 2 CDR B&Ps of anything on this slightly outdated list of mine: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/brkelly3/cdr_list.html (Sorry for the crosspost on digi-phish) ------------------------------ From: Dave Cohen Subject: Bruce & Bela Extras Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 14:40:47 -0400 Thanks to some CDR trades and transfers, I've got a handful of extra Bruce Hornsby and Bela Fleck DAT's. Yup. Sound Devices USB PRE. It's bus-powered, works with Macs and PC's, notebooks and desktops, has plenty of I/O, a headphone amp with plenty of drive signal, and beats the digipants off anything else I've bought and used. If anyone is looking for a Delta 1010 or MOTU 828, email me. I have one of each that just didn't do the trick for my purposes -- never been driven faster than 16 bit/s. Brand new condition. $400 for either one. ------------------------------ From: "Dan Updike" Subject: Jesse's comments on USB, re: UA-30 Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 16:47:26 -0400 I'm not an expert on USB-audio, or audio in general, but I will tell you this......USB is an in-expensive way to move audio to where you want it to go. Having said that, is it the best way? Nope! Not by a long shot. If you are having problems with occaisional latency, dropouts, and glitches use a SCSI or Firewire interface. Firewire alone has more than 30 times the bandwith than USB. USB is just the ticket for some people. I suspect that you will find similar problems with all USB Audio products if you look (or listen closely enough). If perfection is what you need, use something else. --Dan ------------------------------ From: "cory" Subject: Rig for sale Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 16:51:04 -0400 Earthworks SR-71 $475 DMIC-20 $450 Sony M1 $475 Audio Magic X-Stream Cables $75 All items in great shape and probably used about 20 shows. Any other >>sugestions??? > > > This sounds very similar to the problem I am having, though > I am using the Roland UA-30 USB device and Cool Edit Pro. > I don't recall any mention about offsets, but I do remember My insignificant 2 cents on the issue, here. I am using an Ego Sys U2A, with Cool Edit Pro. and have done some limited transfers, all D/D, and have not had any audible dropouts that weren't on the source. I will say I have transferred via optical cable from the DAT or the DVD player the Audio track, and have heard no diginoise or dropouts on the transferred recordings. I am planning to run an analog cassette in tonight, and see what happens to the sound when I try to use the A/D capability of the U2A. I don't think there is a hell of a lot of difference between the Roland U30 and the Ego Sys U2A, but I was directed by telephone sales people to get the U2A, over the Roland, and took the advice. Is there provable data on anything? I think a statistician can prove anything they want correct, so if engineering gives a statistician numbers the engineer is not satisfied with the statictician can twist them to be whatever. I'm sure that happens in the audio world, after it's designed, it's gotta be sold. Keith > I bought a UA-30 2 months ago, and did testing to compare two wav files recorded from the same tape. After trying different tapes, different decks, and different recording programs (and even 2 different USB cables, in case one was marginal) I found that there is NO WAY to get bit-for-bit accurate transfers. I would get continual, tho normally inaudible, dropouts of 1920 bytes. There would be a dropout nearly every second. Asking Roland tech support about this - I was rather pissed off and said I'd be informing anyone who listened about this flaw if in fact it isn't just my circumstances somehow, I got the following answer: > Jesse, > > What you are experiencing seems to be the limitations of USB (not 2.0) > audio. There is not enough bandwidth to support the internal (digital) 20 > bit depth audio input and output of the UA-30/3. If you feel you are the > one designated to inform or warn customers of problems with products, I'm > sure you have extensive experience in getting to the source. The source of > your lesser quality recording is not Edirol or Edirol's components. USB > Audio was simply not designed to do bit for bit level recording. If you do > in fact want a bit for bit recording, you would need to use non-USB audio > system. Edirol's non-USB products do not have any of the issues you have > described. If we were to release a USB 2.0 (capable of higher bandwidth) > compatable product, Edirol's quality internals would prove themselves as not > simply professional-capable, but top of the line. > Check for our new products in November. Until then, good luck with your > research. > > Sincerely, > > Isaac Balloun > Technical Support Representative > Edirol Corporation North America > Now his answer (USB can't cut it) is simply bullshit; the bandwidth of USB is nearly 1Mbyte/sec, which far exceeds the 150Kbytes/sec needed for stereo 16bit/44.1Khz. Even if (due to poor engineering on their behalf) all audio transfers had to be 48Khz, 24-bit, full-duplex, stereo, it would be 188*4= 750Kbytes/sec. Basically, it comes down to this: Roland engineered something with significant flaws, that reviewers didn't pick up on b/c most reviewers are more the musician type than engineer types, and lazy besides (IMHO). Roland chose to market this as a professional-grade, $200 sound-"card" with digial i/o that IS NOT LOSSLESS, and they don't state this anywhere. I have to admit it sounds fine - much better than my laptop's built-in audio (which is terrible). But professional it ain't. And now I'm out the money. Anybody know of a Win2K-compatible USB digital i/o soundcard that's been properly and provably engineered correctly? I have 2 motherboards, if you are interested in upgrading (ha-ha). #1 is a Pentium 200, with 128 MB of RAM. Fits any ATX case, and has plenty of ISA and PCI slots. Could be used to run a linux box for something, or something else that doesnt require a lot of power. #2 is an Asus VA6 board, with a single DIMM of unknown size-- but RAM is dirt cheap right now-- $39 for 256 MB. This board will handle any Pentium II slot-style processor, and I also have a "slocket" adapter, to use a 370 style processor-- PIII, Celeron.... fits any ATX case. I was able to get a clean (without any dropouts) audio-only stream directly to DAT (don't trust those stream-saving progs), but only with 32kbit/s (ATRAC3 compressed Real stream). If there was anybody able to get a better (and clean) stream please get in touch with me, I'd love to trade for a better stream (although I did not found anybody so far being lucky to indeed get a better audio-only (!) stream, the audio-only was much better in sound quality then the video streams). I'm also looking for recordings from U2's Elevation 3rd leg tour, have lots of US/Canada 1st leg and Euro 2nd leg shows on DAT and/or SHN.
