From: Mike Perkins <mperkins@telus.net> Subject: Dirty (filthy?) DAT heads Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2001 21:38:36 -0700 Dear intelligent ones: I have been using a Sony D8 for the last six months or so to record the sounds of various pipe and other organs that I have had the pleasure to install. The motive behind this bizarre behavior is a desire to transfer these recorded sounds (actually organ playing of a high caliber) to the medium known as Compact Disk. I must confess that this exercise is not simply one to give me CDs with which I can play myself to sleep but to enable me to put them in the hands of church committee members and others who possibly on hearing the wondrous sounds I have captured will be motivated to enquire about what service I may render when it comes time for them to consider a new organ. I have been pleased with the Sony D8 and a companion Sony DTC750 which is TOS linked to my computer for the purpose of burning CDs. My practice is to take the DAT cassettes from the D8 and play them into the computer via the DTC 750 so as to capture their contents in the form of .WAV files. I chose this modus operandi to minimize wear and tear on the D8 and because SONY's TOS link cables for the notorious 7 pin connector are so copulating expensive. The software I am using is a combination of WaveLab Lite, Steinberg Clean, and ROXIO. In general the results have been excellent, that is, until recently, when the DTC exhibited low and highly distorted output at all its "shipping docks" i.e. TOS, S/PDIF, and audio. I deduced that the problem was in the front end, and the correctness of this deduction was confirmed by the SONY Corporate service center, They told me that the head assembly was worn out and should be replaced at a cost of $400. I was considerably dismayed by this and declined to have the repair done. I took the unit home and ran a Sony head cleaning tape through the machine for about thirty seconds. Hey Presto! the machine came back into fine form. Unfortunately the improved performance didn't last - after about an hour we were back to low output and distortion. I gave it another pass with the head cleaner, and again, all was well for half an hour or so. When the distorted output occurs it starts out almost inaudibly and gradually increases in intensity. My question to you knowledgeable ones is: Do I actually have a worn out head assembly, or does it simply need cleaning with some appropriate chemical? In passing, I should note that the SONY service center never even opened the case to arrive at their diagnosis, I know that this is so because I had made witness marks on the screws that hold the case in place and when the unit was returned to me I could see that those screws had never been removed. A second question I would like to pose is this, my DAT tape output is "pristine" and so is the quality of the output from my CDs when played through either my DVD drive or my TDK 24/10/40 CDR. However when I play the tapes through my portable SANYO CD player I hear intermittent fluttering "hits". This behavior is usually not repeatable when I reset playback to the beginning of a track. I have been told that CDs that are burned on a CDR drive do not display the exact characteristics of a commercially produced CD, my informant believes that the reflectivity of the typical CDR is quite different to that of "of the shelf" music CDs. Can anyone verify this? I am using 16x rated SONY high capacity CDRs which I burn at 12x in the TDK burner. I await your words of wisdom regarding any of the above with bated breath Sincerely, Mike
From: Robert Moose <rmoose@mooses.org> Subject: ISO: Colorblind James Experience also Proclaimers Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 00:46:58 -0400 After finding seemingly the only person in net-land with a Colorblind James Experience show, I now have one (2nd gen analog from FM, 1990, Cornell Univ.) and am looking to add others. I also have a few Proclaimers recordings, one from the current tour and a couple from previous years and would like to add there also. From: "Alisdair Menzies" <alimenzies@hotmail.com> Subject: Question for the technically minded Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 14:36:16 +0200 Greetings, everyone, Here’s a question for the technically minded among you. I recently acquired a pair of DPA 4061’s without the battery box. Needing a battery box and wanting a bass roll off, I decided to build one myself, instead of buying DPA’s MPS 6030 (which doesn’t have any bass roll off anyway). I got the layout of the guts of the MPS6030 from Markus (thanks Markus!), which is the following (I’ve only shown one channel, and haven’t shown the fact that the negative of the battery is connected to the ground): Capacitor 10 uF Mic--------o-----------¦---------o-------DAT ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ > > resistor < < resistor 10 Kohm > > 100 Kohm ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ o---------------------o ¦ ¦ + 9 V Battery First remark, this differs from the traditional scheme for a battery box that I’ve seen for capsules such as the panasonics, which don’t have the second (100 Kohm) resistor: Capacitor 10 uF Mic--------o-----------¦----------DAT ¦ ¦ > resistor < 10 Kohm > ¦ ¦ ¦ + 9 V Battery First question: what’s the use of the second resistor – does it in any way alter what you’d get if you used the second (one resistor) setup? Second question, calculating the bass roll off. I'd like to change the capacitor value to obtain a bass roll off. With the second (one resistor) setup, I’ve read that the bass roll off can be calculated using the following formula: F =1/(2 x Pi x C x impedance) From this you can derive what capacitor you’d use to get a given bass roll off frequency. I’d be using the line input of my D8, which has (I am told) an impedance of 47000. Question: does the two resistor setup alter in any way this means of calculating the bass roll off? If so, how would I calculate it? The reason I’m asking all this is that I’m far from being a techno-wizard, so I’d appreciate any help, and relatively simple to understand answers ;o) Many thanks, Alisdair Alisdair Menzies, 8, Rue du Quartier Neuf 1205 Geneva Switzerland (22) 320 94 14 alimenzies@hotmail.com http://membres.tripod.fr/Alisdair_Menzies/trade.html _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

From: "Otto, Michael" <Michael_Otto@tvratings.com> Subject: Copy DVD disks on a CDR burner Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 10:42:17 -0400 Hi I've been getting email ads for software that will allow one to copy a DVD disk on a CDR burner, thus making it possible to duplicate movies on DVD. Does anyone know about this? Is it technically possible? Does the software actually do it? thanks ezrider

There are formats that can be written to CDR that *some* DVD players are compatible with. Copying such media is fairly trivial. http://www.vcdhelper.com/ These are different than DVDR* and DVD itself (different rate MPEG-2), and among other things CDR itself is more limited in capacity. I do not know of anyone trading live music on DVD today, which would be relevant to DAT-heads. And copying of commerically released material is something we do not encourage. If you did get a DVDR* (multiple incompatible formats) or something in a trade, it should be possible to convert it to another format using a compatible DVD computer drive, but it will not be identical. This latter idea might be a interesting discussion for DAT-heads. Obviously there is a strong sentiment here about lossy compression of audio, what about converting video from DV to (S)VCD-rate MPEG-2? Are people actively trading SVCD/... Sean
From: chris wallace <chris_wally43@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: Neumann BS 48 i-2 Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 10:41:01 -0700 (PDT) out the door for $175. I'll pay shipping. description below Battery Supply BS 48 i-2 The battery unit supplies one or two microphones with 48 V phantom powering (P48). The maximum current drain is 5 mA for each microphone. The audio outputs are dc-free. Therefore, no transformer is needed to connect to unbalanced inputs. The unit has two 5-pin XLR connectors for the microphone cables. The AC 20 and AC 21 adapter cables split the signals to 3-pin XLR connectors. For special applications different adapter cables (AC 22...AC 29) are available. The length of operation from a single battery depends on the type of battery and the current drain of the microphone. For example, a microphone requiring 2 mA can be operated at least 20 hours with an alkaline battery. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
