Obviously there is a strong sentiment >here about lossy compression of audio, what about >converting video from DV to (S)VCD-rate MPEG-2? Are >people actively trading SVCD/... There is a small classical VCD constituency, using the Terapin VCD stand-alone or computer-based systems. These VCDs get about 73 minutes on a disc, but quality (mpeg1) is not great either full-screen computer or through DVD players to TV (most DVD players that can handle CDR can play VCDs). It does look very good in a small (Windows Media Player) window. Sources are TV broadcasts and stealth videoing (!!). I realize the Naks do not operate on phantom power, but I'm just wondering if there are any noticeable differences in sound quality when a preamp is hooked up. And does anyone have any cleaning tips for the inside of the Nak bodies? Found some old batteries left inside a pair of Naks that left behind a little rust/corrosion. Thanks in advance. -Jason ------------------------------ From: Kevin A Kraska Subject: FT Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2001 06:21:27 -0400 I have an extra copy of Sarah McLaughlin 8/26/99 on 1 CD-R. Robert ------------------------------ From: "Marc Jacobson" Subject: DAT>CD Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2001 10:03:26 -0400 I'm having difficulties transfering my DATs onto CDRs. Here's my rig: Sony M1> Am-dig active 7-pin cable> "Digital in" on a Phillips consumer CD burner I only get a signal in the CD burner for select DATs. Is this because some are burned at 44.1 khz, while others are burned at 48 khz? Or is it related to something else? If it is a problem of khz, is there any way around this problem? Any help is gratefully received. Thanks! Would like to trade it for a few recent Ratdog shows. thanks. ------------------------------ From: "pwk" Subject: m1, metal detectors & Jane's Addiction Reply-To: sleepypedro@yahoo.com Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2001 12:53:31 -0600 Just wanted to throw a testimonial out to the world: I was able to make it past a metal detector last night with an m1 and a set of DPA4061 capsules & battery box. Dunno if I was just lucky, the detector wasn't cranked up to eleven, or what, but.... it can be done. So don't be afraid to try it in these uncertain times, if such a thing floats your boat. What's the worst that can happen -- you get sent back to your car to unload? Being this is a politically thorny issue, I'd also like to state for the record that I certainly respect the right of the venue to perform such searches -- our safety certainly means worlds more in the scheme of things than making just another recording from another random venue... The gig in question last night was Jane's Addiction / Femi Kuti @ the Verizon Ampitheater in Charlotte NC. The mix under the hood wasn't the best I'd ever heard, and the resulting recording reflects that... but it's still pretty good. Official stats: dpa4061 (bass rolloff) > m1, 6' in hat, 13th row in front of left stack. If you'd like it, send a URL to your list... also if you plan on taping Jane's on this tour, please drop me a line. Stay safe! pwk ------------------------------ From: "Andy Swinburnson" Subject: Death Cab For Cutie (US / Canada Tour) Tapers Wanted! I have been told that CDs that are burned on a >CDR drive do not display the exact characteristics of a commercially >produced CD, my informant believes that the reflectivity of the typical CDR >is quite different to that of "of the shelf" music CDs. Can anyone verify >this? Regarding dirty heads, since you have already used a cleaning cassette, next thing to try is wet clean the heads. You can do this yourself or pay a professional to do it. If you're feeling industrious, Art Munson of Cassette House has some good info (from DAT-Heads) archived here: http://www.cassettehouse.com/techinfo/datclean.html Otherwise you can call up a "known good" technician like Paul Plotnik of Pro Digital outside Philadelphia (610-353-2400) and see how much he'll charge to do it. I and many many other DAT-Heads can vouch for his skills and honesty. Even if you choose to do it yourself it would be worth the toll call from wherever you are to chat with him for a few minutes, he is quite knowledgeable. You didn't include the age or hours of use the deck has, but yes the heads do eventually wear out and when that happens the repair bill would be in the ballpark of the estimate you received from Sony. Another thing to consider may be the fact that some low quality DAT tapes have been known to shed and gum up heads. It seems like most manufacturers have made a bad batch so to speak at some time or another. But with such a tape you would get similar behavior with both decks. At the risk of potentially clogging the heads in your other deck you could see if the tape in question plays OK in that deck. Regarding CD-R's yes they are not as reflective as stamped CD's. But the technology has come a long way in a short period of time and the high quality Sony discs you're using probably aren't the problem. Some CD players, particularly older ones (pre- CD-R vintage), and particularly some low cost and/or older portable players, aren't as good at playing CD-R's as newer decks. If the discs play fine in other players it may be time for a new portable deck. Another consideration may also be the way in which the discs were burned. Everything else being equal, discs burned in track-at-once (TAO) mode can sometimes give trouble on playback where discs burned disc-at-once (DAO) may not. Burning DAO vs. TAO is a function of the software you're using and the way you're using it. You can consult your documentation for more info if needed.
