They're high energy cajun folk rock. If you like Leftover Salmon, you'll like them. There's a banjo and a fiddle and drums and guitar and bass... I may be leaving something out. The fiddle player is awesome! Their website has some audio clips, etc. on it: http://www.clumsylovers.com Hope this helps! Hope to see some of you guys at the AZ show. From: Jason Heckathorn <ja2488@yahoo.com> Subject: blank DAT's for trade Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2001 17:49:46 -0700 (PDT) What I have is (1) Maxell HS-90, (1) Sony DGD15 Cleaner cartridge and (7) Maxell HS-60 tapes, all are shrink wrapped. Also have (5) Maxell unlabeled 60M DAT's or 13 DAT tapes. What I Don't have is a DAT machine. Slight problem there. Any tapers interested in trading a few shows on disc for the tapes please drop me a line and send your list. Seems like a waste not to have someone use them. Obviously there is a strong sentiment >>here about lossy compression of audio, what about >>converting video from DV to (S)VCD-rate MPEG-2? Are >>people actively trading SVCD/... I am part of a Pearl Jam Fan Based group. We have been taking videos and converting them to VCD's and in some cases SVCD's for a while now. They have become VERY popular among Pearl Jam traders. The quality varies due to the stealthing of the video cameras... but I will say if you take master/1st gen. the results are as good as the video tapes most people have. The encoding quality also varies GREATLY depending on the capture hardware, encoding and other variables. Attention to detail is a must when creating VCD's... but they can be made well. The other good thing is that it becomes very easy to dub in new audio once everything is digitized... meaning that great videos with the best audio sources are produced and then traded... not to mention no more generational losses from making copies, and copies no longer take 2 hours to make on you VCR, but only minutes now on your CD-R. Not being DAT related, if there are other questions please e-mail me and not the list... no need to cluter this place up more than I did. Rich

From: "Douglas Roark" <droark@naxs.com> Subject: FS: Sony M1 + Core Sound Cardioid mics Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 09:15:55 -0400 Hello. I'm offering these two up for sale. They're each about 1 1/2 years old but have barely been used. The M1 has about ten hours of usage (six recording, four playing), and the mics have about six hours. I'd prefer to sell these together for $700 OBO, shipping included. Separately, I'll sell the M1 for $525 and the mics for $175 (both OBO), shipping not included. Thank you. D.R.
From: Michael Miller <mcmiller@Radix.Net> Subject: re: CM300 w/ preamp Reply-To: Michael Miller <mcmiller@Radix.Net> Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 11:00:20 -0400 (EDT) I used CM300s for a while and when I fed them through a preamp, I got much better tapes. The improvement was due to running the signal from the pre-amp into the line level port instead of the mic input on the D7. You aren't going to make the CM300s sound any better. The improvement you see will depend on the quality of the pre-amp in your deck vs. the quality of the outboard preamp you insert into the chain. Of course, one benefit of getting a really good preamp that can supply phantom power now is that when you upgrade from the CM300s you will already have a power source for the new mics. michael

I bought this machine used and have no idea how many hours it has under its belt. It was reasonably priced and was perfectly suitable for the purpose for which I bought it. If I can't get it fixed for minimal dollars I may replace it with a Fostex D5, which appears to be a better built deck. I favor the Fostex because it has TOS link capability built in. What if anything would compel a user to prefer a Tascam units over the Fostex D5? > Another thing to consider may be the fact that some low quality DAT > tapes have been known to shed and gum up heads. At the risk of potentially clogging the heads in your other deck > you could see if the tape in question plays OK in that deck. Yes it does, as do several others. I had suspected that shedding of tape coating may be the problem and so I removed the drive assembly from the unit for closer inspection. There was no evidence of tape debris to be seen but I noted that there were some fine hairs floating around in the drive, this didn't surprise me because the two German Shepherd dogs that call this home shed their coats an awful lot. I decided to remove the hair, and to this end I ran the machine while listening to its output, which was distorted and intermittent, and then blew gently into the general area where the tape passes over the rotating head assembly. The output then disappeared completely. This not only surprised me but considerably dismayed me! I have serviced VCRs over the years and have never had any serious problems in so doing. This unit is very similar to, but smaller than the typical VCR head assembly and so I was not prepared for catastrophic failure such as has occurred. When I have a moment or two I will have to investigate this further. >Regarding CD-R's yes they are not as reflective as stamped CD's. I find your observation very interesting, I have had no experience of portable CD players until the Sanyo unit I recently purchased at Costco for a very reasonable price - far below Sony, Panasonic, Koss or others that were on display. The Sanyo even has built-in AM/FM. Its price was less than half that of the lowest priced Sony. It seems that this goes to support the old saying "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch". A friend who is the world's ultimate high end HI-FI freak has the same point of view as your good self. He identified that my Sanyo as being of an older generation of machines and that the behavior of which I am complaining is quite common with such units. He tells me that the latest machines, especially those with MP3 capability are pretty immune to the observed defect. >Another consideration may also be the way in which the discs were burned. >Everything else being equal, discs burned in track-at-once (TAO) mode can >sometimes give trouble on playback where discs burned disc-at-once (DAO) >may not. From: "Jackson Gibbs" <gibbs@crater.net> Subject: Low Cost CD Duplicators? Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 12:57:11 -0700 I was just browsing ebay and stumbled on a number of auctions selling the "Butterfly Media 12x CD Duplicator" (http://www.butterflymedia.com/products-cdcopier.asp) for what seem like fairly reasonable prices ($150-$250). This looks kinda nice to me, quick 12x duplicator for cheap. Unfortunately their site doesn't exactly provide much in the way of details. Another site (http://www.usmtelecom.com/mmbgcdc1s12x.html) is selling it new for $269 and lists a little more in detail. These feature lines kinda make me wonder though: - Auto Format Detection for all kinds of CD sources. - Support both Disk-at-once and Track-at-once modes. - Copy Speed: Max 12x - Writing mode: Disk-at-once and track-at-once auto selected In particular, the auto-selected dao/tao. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if this model would suffice for duplicating audio cds without inserting the dreaded tao 2-second gap? And while I'm on the subject, what is the current cheapest stand-alone means of duplicating an audio cd?
