This is for the Ratdog show at the Palace Theater in
Albany, NY on 11/19/00. It was recorded w/ DPA
4023 mics, and is on one Sony 90m DAT.
In return, I'd like a sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DAT

First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it
(unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I
would give preference to...in which case tell me how

Hey there everyone, I remember seeing a lot of posts here in the pasts
about taping previous tours of Mike Watt. I noticed he is touring again,
and many of the shows, at least the ones this week, are featuring Thalia
Zedek, formerly of the band Come, as a support act. I'd greatly
appreciate it if anyone taping Watt could get her set as well. I know
Watt generally allows all kinds of taping; not absolutely sure about
Thalia, but I doubt she would mind either. Please let me know if you
manage to tape any of her sets, I have lots of stuff to trade.

I'm looking to find someone that might be going to TR's concert on Oct 26.
I'm not sure if he allows taping. (Where is that list of who allows taping
and who doesn't, I couldn't find it!). I'm planning to go myself but don't
have gear available.

[Tim Reynolds, as if you don't know, hit the limelight when he played with
Dave Matthews a number of years ago. He is now doing solo work. He
specializes in 12 string guitar. Amazing player.]

Subject: Tin Hat Trio--taper-friendly tour dates
Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 01:10:22 -0700 (PDT)
Attention CA & AZ tapers & music lovers:
Tin Hat Trio, an acoustic group from the Bay Area & NYC, will be
performing in Tucson on monday night(10/15/01) at the Solar Culture, and
then in San Diego, LA, Berkley, San Fran, Portland, Seattle & Eugene(see
schedule below). I caught them in Phoenix tonite(Sunday) and they
were**FANTASTIC**. If you can, by all means do yourself a favor and catch
them.
They are quite taper friendly--in fact, Mark, the guitarist, advised me on
the best place to put my mics(not up front, near the back--he was right!).
The acoustic format is an interesting combination which blends
guitar, violin and accordian beautifully. Their music is a unique blend
of roughly ~40% folk, ~30%jazz, ~30% classical, and 100% talented
musicians! If you do go and tape, let me know, I'd love a copy. And tell
Carla(violinist) you heard about it from Datheads!.
And last but not least, a major plus is that their show was super-bargain
priced at $8.00. Just wait 'till SFX finds out about them...
Tin Hat Trio tour schedule:
Tucson (Solar Culture) mon 10-15
San Diego (Dizzy's) tue 10-16
LA (knitting factory) thur 10-18
Berkley (Freight & Salvage) fri 10-19

I have an extra taper's ticket to the String Cheese Incident at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC on 11/2/01. I have the tickets in hand and could meet in the DC area to exchange or could meet prior to the show outside the venue.
I have promised my "extra ticket" away but would like to make sure any tapers who got shut out have a chance to get their rigs in, esp. since constitution hall typically has less than 30 designated taper tickets available.
Getting in to the tapers section without a tapers ticket, or rear balcony ticket, can be very difficult before the show at DAR. At Phil & Friends, I had to try about 4 different doors before I could catch an usher with their back turned. It may also be difficult getting your rig in the front door, although i did not have such problems last time.

Subject: Dirty (filthy?) DAT heads
asked:
> Do I actually have a worn out head assembly, or does it simply need clean=
ing
> with some appropriate chemical?
The head drum of a full sized (30mm) DAT deck spins at 2000 rpm and the tap=
e
wrap is about 90 degrees; a portable deck has this tape wrap increased as
the head drum diameter is usually half that of a full-sized deck. This
rotation, among other advantages, allows the heads to achieve an air foil
between the heads and the tape to reduce friction. The two small heads
protrude into the tape ever so slightly to produce a 20-degree azimuth
offset track width of just over 13 microns (13 microns =3D 0.000512=A0inches).
As the head drum wears, the air foil diminishes with time and the abrasion
of the tape continues to take its toll on the actual heads as well. The
result is usually a marked decrease in head RF level output, error rate
increases and gunk forming on the heads and on the drum itself. There is n=
o
substitute for a professional cleaning of the heads, drum and tape path, bu=
t
it may be a futile effort as the wear continues.
Thanks!

I would love to trade for recent Depeche Mode, Bush or any other recent,

Will start recording soon, using my good ol' tcd7 and a pair of SP

How to check your digital soundcard with CoolEditPro (CEP)
Check for bit-exact transfer
Generate a soundfile like the following: 10 seconds of silence, then 20 se=
conds of sound (e. g. tone with 55 Hz at -6 dB) and another 10 seconds of =
silence. Save the file and import it into CEP multitrack view. Setup your =
Soundcard and CEP to playback this generated track, feed the digital (SP/D=
IF or AES/EBU) sound output to your digital sound input, and setup another=
track to record this digital in. Arm the recording button and start recor=
ding. If all is setup right, you will record a digital copy of your genera=
ted track. Save this recorded track. For the result there are several poss=
ibilities:
CRC32-Checksum of source and copy are identical: nothing to do, playback A=
ND recording are bit-exact, no resampling, no dither, nothing else is invo=
lved (that's like in paradise:-), this soundcard can be used as a referenc=
e device (I got one: a multi!wav pro, ISA).
CRC32-Checksums are different: playback and/or recording are not bit-exact=
, probably there will be hardware-resampling in the digital input. If leve=
ls of source and copy are the same (statistics function) and silence remai=
ns silence (sample value is constantly zero for the whole silence section)=
this may be hardware resampling without dither. In case of identical leve=
ls, but silence becomes noise with an amount of +- 1 sample value (i. e. +=
-1 LSB), this may be hardware resampling with dither.=20
If even the levels differ, there might be a malfunction (or poor card desi=
gn).
Check for continuity of your recording with CoolEditPro
Create a basic file of about 5 minutes length with a constant tone of abou=
t 55 Hz at about -12 dB FS. Amplify a few cycles at the beginning of every=
10 seconds by 3 dB. Amplify the same few cycles at the beginning of every=
whole minute by another 3 dB. And also the same few cycles at the beginni=
ng of the whole 5 minutes file. (Or create the first 10 seconds section an=
d repeat it 6 times, then repeat the whole minute and so on)
This file should be played back by one computer (or off a CD player, if bu=
rnt to CD) and be recorded by your recording equipment (DAT, Notebook.....=
). Open the recorded file with CEP, zoom in to the first 8 - 10 seconds an=
d change to "spectral view" (Not available in multitrack view). In spectra=
l view you can see the amount of frequencies among time. The original file=
should show a baseline at 55 Hz and no other components (only the 10 seco=
nds "ticks" by raised amplitude can show some small higher frequencies)
Now scroll through the file and check for clear vertical lines. Vertical l=
ines show amounts of all frequencies and therefore stand for gaps, spikes =
or steps in the signal. If there are no vertical lines, all seems to be ok=
, you could then check for a longer time or at a higher zooming range. If =
you find vertical lines, switch back to "waveform view" and have a look at=
the signal there.
My results: Egosys U2A, P II 366, 128 MB, 10 Gig, Win98 SE; with powermana=
gement turned off both in BIOS and Windows, there are no glitches or gaps;=
with active powermanagement (even when set to "always on") there are gaps=
of about 80 to 300 milliseconds every two to three minutes, these are aud=
ible! And the U2A does hardware-resampling with dither.
