Hi all:
Soon I will not have dubbing capabilities, and I am wondering if some of
you might want to review my collection at:
www.tedm.com/dats.htm
and recommend which ones would be good to make clones of while I have
dubbing capabilities. Thanks very much.

so back in camden this summer, one of my dpa 4061s broke, the connector came
off. tgi north america, the dpa distributor, then sent me a replacement 4060
instead of a 4061. so i sent it back
then they sent me a black 4061, and i have beige mics. so i sent it back
then they sent me a mic which was 16 db off my 4061, so i sent both back (after
using them once). now they tell me in order to resolve this thing, which goes
all the way back to june 24, i need to buy a brand new 4061 from them for $420,
since the defective mic is out of warranty.
please, someone on this list tell me you know someone with a beige 4061 they
want to part with, because $400 is more than i paid for the original pair of
brand new 4061s

Just wanted to let folks know that we are now carrying the FMR Audio
Really Nice Compressor (RNC1773). It's a truly wonderful, compact
compressor at a very low price. For details please see our Web page.

Subject: distortion problem
Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 17:49:16 -0400
So, I taped the band Dianogah last night. They consist of two
bassists and a drummer. They don't sing so I set myself up in
the center of the stage with one mic pointing towards the bassist
on the left of the drummer, and one mic pointing to the bassit
on the right. The stand was about 4-5ft away from the drummer.
Everything sounds great...the right mix of each instrument....BUT
I'm getting distortion all over the place. When I record some of it
into Sound Forge, the levels never clip, or go past -2.5dB to be
exact....but when things get a bit loud, the peaks go flat. The levels
on my D7 never clipped, the levels on my A/D converter were
great all night, yet I still get distortion. Its almost like brickwalling,
but
I'm using the digital In on my D7. My only thought is that
maybe the music was too loud for my mics? Is that possible?
I've done on-stage recordings before but never of a band this
loud. If I used my -10dB pads would that have solved my problem?
Is this what the -10dB pads are for? I thought they were used
if you were overloading your preamp. I had this same problem
with another VERY loud show a couple of months ago (Tortoise)
but I thought I just had my levels turned up too high...so I played
it safe this time. Any advice or help would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, if you like Tortoise and bands like that (instrumental indie rock)
check Dianogah out. They're playing with another band that is
just as good. For tour dates go to http://www.xsite.net/~dianogah/index.html

I'm not even close to being a legal expert, but it seems to me
that if I had several hundred hours invested in MP3s of my own
music (that is music that I had written and produced myself) on
my computer and the RIAA came along and destroyed them, they
would be in for lawsuit of grand proportions.

Hi,
For records that are in relatively good shape that I just want to remove
vinyl noise, I use Cool Edit Pro. I sample the vinyl noise and then delete
it from the wav file. Since most of the noise I'm trying to get rid of is
low frequency rumble, I ramp off the noise reduction in the 14-18k range.
That seems to eliminate most all of the artifacting I was getting in the
hi-hat area of the drums. Probably not that scientific, but it sounds good
to me. I haven't found anything that will fix pops to my liking so I leave
those alone, I prefer a little crackle to digital artifacting anyday.

Hi
Does anyone know a website where I could order the Soundman OKM II series mics? I have looked all
over, and all I've found is the official site, which is in German, and no info on prices or where to
BUY them or anything. I saw on one site they go for about 350DM (about $170). Is this an accurate
figure, or are they significantly more?
Anyway, I'm just looking for preferably a US company that sells them online, or some UK site where I
could order them, or at least see the prices!! I live in Hawaii.
I have gotten shows made with these mics, and I really like the sound. Sounds better than my CSBs,
and I love the way you can wear them like earphones!! That's the main reason I want them.
thanks,
john

Subject: A worthy read
Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 09:53:47 -0400
This was in today's eWeek IT newsletter. You'll have to "read between the
lines" a little here because this article only relates the RIAA's proposal
to IT interests. I think that there real intentions reach well beyond the
author's IT perspective. Interesting that a group always known for their
"bleeding edge" policies and practices (laugh) is now at the forefront of
the digital realm. Maybe it's time to take down our publicly viewable
trading lists. I didn't realize that terrorists were so into Metallica tunes
;-) You should especially enjoy the last paragraph. Peace
VIGILANTE COPYRIGHTS THREATEN WEB SERVICE ADOPTION
-- By Peter Coffee --
What are the rights of creators of digital content? The
Recording Industry Association of America wants to embed an
extreme position on this question into anti-terrorism laws,
possibly triggering a backlash that could hurt other network
content creators--especially would-be developers of Web
services.
We're used to seeing applications come to users through
discrete transactions. Terms of use can declare and limit
the intended functions of the software. A license or
contract can try to limit liability for defects, and
establish jurisdiction over subsequent disputes.
I won't try to resolve the resulting argument over whether
packaged software is a good (covered by the Uniform
Commercial Code) or something else. I won't address the
question of whether a "shrink-wrap" license is a proper
contract, with actual and comparable bargaining power on
both sides of the deal. If any reader of this newsletter
knows of persuasive test cases, I'd appreciate a pointer.
But these are old questions, even if they are still largely
unanswered.
I want to get into a more novel question: Does copyright
include a sort of hunting license that excuses harm done to
infringers--or even just suspected infringers--in the course
of enforcing ownership rights by means of vigilante justice?
The RIAA seems to anticipate future collateral damage to the
"availability of data, a program, a system or information,"
in the words of a first-draft proposal that even the RIAA
may soften in continuing discussions. But be that as it may,
the association wants an exemption up front from criminal
liability resulting from such ill effects.
The RIAA seeks to protect copyright holders from
anti-terrorist rules against computer attacks if the
holders' harmful actions, or those of their agents under
law, were "reasonably intended to impede or prevent the
unauthorized transmission of [copyrighted] work [if] such
transmission would infringe the rights of the copyright
owner." Make that umbrella any bigger, and you could use it
as a strategic missile defense.
If someone steals my car, and I give chase in another
vehicle and cause damage to people or property, can I claim
that I was merely trying to protect my own property rights?
Or will the court declare my actions to be reckless, even
criminal? Should the power to carry out enforcement actions
in cyberspace be limited to those with proper training and
tools, not to mention lawful authority?
If I have licensed a Web-based application, not knowing that
it incorporates third-party modules linked across the Net
without those parties' consent, can those third parties act
against me without judicial process in a way that causes me
grave harm? What are my rights of redress against such
damage?
If Web-based applications draw their licensees into this
kind of Wild West culture, will enterprise IT buyers decide
to hold off on adopting Web services offerings? Will those
buyers stay with an acquisition model that gives them, even
under the noxious UCITA, at most one enemy?
And how long can any industry last when it starts to treat
all of its customers as outlaws--who merely have yet to be
caught?
