From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: Inexpensive Stealth Mics? Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 12:34:35 -0500 Hey Hey! If you're careful not to do A/B listening test, you'll get great results from the radio shack stuff. I used to run a pair of the 33-1033's (I think) tiny Lavalier mics, which came in the red and white box. These were replaced in the mid-1990's by a model in a blue and white box, i forget the number but the new ones were black instead of silver. If you do compare the radio shack lavalier mic with a mic designed for something other than speech recording then you will probably notice the treble boost, around 10KHz, which increases vocal intelligibility. Most vocal mics have some sort of treble boost, advertised as a "presence rise" and it's what makes them less suitable for recording full-range sound like most tapers would want/need. I had loads of fun getting very nice results with R/S gear, also I liked the PZM mikes, and I still run into tapers who remember me with the flat square mics!!! I never owned a pair, but knew about 5-6 people who would let me borrow theirs when I lived in St Louis. (I have cassette masters of Phish and Grateful Dead made with Radio Shack PZM and one FOB of the dead made with the little lavaliers- 5-27-1993 cal expo, but I can't copy cassettes at the moment, both Nak's are out of service. If you want to hear the dead thru the Shack, it can be arranged, but there are better tapes out there of those events.) Cheap is good, you never know when you'll be glad you have some extra mic in your bag for an interview or some rare opportunity to leave a mic in a risky place. . . good luck!!! -tom On Friday, October 19, 2001, at 11:50 AM, Digestifier wrote: > > From: Blake Quorn <blakeq@teleport.com> > Subject: Inexpensive Stealth Mics? > Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 20:14:34 -0700 > > What do people think is a better mic, the inexpensive Core Sound or > Sound Professionals model? From: "geoff nicholson" <geofry@speedsite.com> Subject: Anyone else going to Man or Astroman? or Cutthroats 9 shows Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 12:37:50 -0600 Is anyone else going to tape Man or Astroman? or Cutthroats 9 on the tours coming up? I'm taping the Chicago gigs. Both bands are taper friendly. If you go to MOA? just ask for Coco, if you go to Cutthroats 9 ask for Chris Spencer, he'll be in a NY Yankees hat, and probably camo shorts, generally friendly. Neither band likes their sound on soundboard tapes... Geoff
From: "Tom Morrison" <SoMnyRds@ziplink.net> Subject: FS: Fostex D5 DAT Decks Reply-To: "Tom Morrison" <SoMnyRds@ziplink.net> Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 13:46:55 -0400 I have 2 Fostex D5 DAT decks that have literally been idle for the past year. They were sent early last year (2000) to Oade's for the usual 6 month interval servicing, then while they were away, my CDR Burning habit was formed, and...and they never were hooked up again... Thus, they sit, unused, and likely NOT to be used again... (I have a couple other decks, so I am not going completely datless...:-) The Fostex D5 is a Professional Level Deck, with Toslink & XLR Input/output (both levels for analog I/O). I have numerous digital cables which I will include in the purchases...along with Remotes... They were used for several years...but always (ALWAYS) sent to Oades for professional cleaning & servicing (every 6-8 months - no matter what)...they are in very good condition! New, this deck is now being sold somewhere close to $700...make me a *reasonable* offer - for one or both... (including shipping) and I will likely accept it...really, these NEED TO GO!!!! I'll even throw in some (10-15) DATS - I have over 1000 DATS to choose from (I'll even let you choose)...:-) Send email to SoMnyRds@ziplink.net Tom
From: Meurglys3@att.net Subject: Digital Card Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 17:50:28 +0000 Hail Heads: Looking for recommendations on a digital i/o sound card that doesn't resample! My PC processor is an Intel Celeron 500 meg running windows 98 opsys. I've been using a Midiman dio2448 as an affordable entry level card but I've had to replace it once and now my replacement may have problems!! Although Midimans service is good(they replaced it free of charge), I've lost confidence in the card. Aye carrumba! Affordable and no resampling are the operative words here. My main objective is transferring my live MD recordings digitally to hard drive without the card resampling. I can live without a lot of frills, bells and whistles. Tom

From: "Winnie Olmer" <who@sover.net> Subject: digital signal questions Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 16:09:37 -0400 My recording gear is; mics->battery box->ZEFIRO INBOX->Sony D8. Has worked great for some time now. I just bought a used Tascam DA-30 MkII as a home deck. If I connect my digital out from the D8 to the DA-30 digital in it records correctly and I can make copies. But if I try to hook up my recording setup listed above to record to the DA-30 directly so that the Zefiro goes to the DA-30 to record instead of the D8, I get squealing, loud humming and basically a lot of horrible loud noise and cant record. Why does this digital feed from the Zefiro into my D8 work, but not going from the Zefiro into the DA-30 digital in? It's a 44.1 signal. I also use a midiman DiO 2448 digital sound card. I know that I have had situations in the past where a signal from a different piece of equipment makes those horrible distorted sounds on the DiO2448. But it has an ANALYZE button. When I run the analyze, it does some sort of synchronization and suddenly the signal can be heard, the recording functions correctly and the distorted sound is gone. I have two questions which are probably related. What is this analyze all about, what is it doing, is there something similar on the DA-30? Could I have some similar issue when I switch between the D8 going into the DA-30 and switch to using the Zephiro Inbox to the digital in on the DA-30? Thanks for the help!! From: Balisong13@aol.com Subject: FS: Matched Pair Earthworks SR-77s Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 17:45:34 EDT I have a matched pair of the Earthworks SR-77 microphones in tubes that I am trying to get rid of. They have only been used 5 times to record the Dave Matthews Band, and a local band in Phoenix called "Oddbox." The microphones are in perfect shape; I make sure to take good care of my gear so that it lasts a long time and works well each time I use it. I am asking $700 for the microphones in protective tubes that come with windscreens and static mounts. Thank you. My email is: Balisong13@aol.com Brian Pearson

From: Allan Chen <kaiyen@stanford.edu> Subject: FS: V2, M1, R300, Oktava mics, Samson mixer, eco-charge Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 22:11:33 -0700 Hello all, I am selling (basically) my entire DAT/taping rig. I haven't taped much in the last year or so (mostly from work) and I don't really expect to tape much in the near-not-so-near future (for stuff other than work, mostly unfortunately). Therefore, it makes more sense to sell some of it...if my prices seem off, just let me know. I have not kept up to date on the street prices of these units. -Lunatec V2 - $900 unit #39, perfect working condition. cosmetically, it is missing the screw on the front faceplate in the upper-right corner, and it is a bit duller-looking than others. I do not abuse my equipment, but I don't carry them around in hermetically-sealed cases, either. **see the eco-charge stuff below** -Sony PCM-M1 - $500 Has about 40-50 hours on the heads, entirely at shows. I have never done anything with this deck except record at shows. Has some tape residue on the front and the spring below the "play" button has gotten smooshed - there just isn't as much travel when you press the button anymore. but it works beautifully and always has. **see the eco-charge stuff below** -Sony PCM-R300 (with warranty) - $400 Has 660 hours on the machine, about 80% playback, and only about 200 hours since the heads were replaced about 1.5 years ago. There are another 2 years on the RepairMaster warranty - I don't have the original paperwork, but I have the warranty number. -Oktava MK012 microphones (1 pair) - $400 Includes omni, hyper, and cardioid for each mic, along with a -10db pad (screwed in-line between the body and the cap). Also a plastic carrying case for each mic and set of caps. Mint condition. -Samson Mixpad 4 - $150 4 channel (2 mic mono/line mono, 1 line stereo) mixer. Has aux send and return. Runs on AC or battery (9-volt) power, has worked very well, very clean. -Eco-Charge battery packs (2) - $100 for both I have a dual-socket (2 female 4-pin connectors) Eco-Charge and a single output (female 4-pin on a cable) "home-made" battery. Both are 6-volt. I also have 1 power cord for the Sony M1 (or any sony portable, for that matter) and another for the V2. I can power both the m1 and the V2 off the dual-socket one for 4.5 hours. thanks, allan ==================== Business Manager Stanford University Academic Computing kaiyen@stanford.edu voice - 650-736-0518 fax - 650-725-8495
