I'm interested in what others do to store their babies?!? I know that you can get these mics soaking wet and it won't hurt long-term performance, but I would also think that a damp or soggy diaphragm would make for a "mushy" tape. . . -t > Anyone have good recommendations for keeping moisture out of my > microphones? > I've got the Neumann made jewel case for my Neumann KM184, and will > sometimes keep them in the plastic sleeves within the case. Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 10:46:18 -0700 Question to all you that do DAT to HD transfers. I am using Soundforge XP4.5 and have a problem recording to a newly installed Seagate 20 Gb/ATA100 7200rpm drive that I designated as the temp directory in SF(partitioned into 5, 5 and 10 Gb seperate drives, my master is a Quantum 10Gb/UDMA66). I get little flurbs in the transfer (sounds like the mic stand being bumped, it isn't on the master) at irregular intervals. I have played with the buffer size and the preload size but to no avail. When I designate the master as the temp directory, I do not see these problems at all. I have done the usual troubleshooting like restarting before recording. I have also burned CDRs at 4X and 8X from the new drive and it works just fine. It is the obvious like not using a slave to record? Thanks for your time. ------------------------------ From: randy@monkeybiz.Stanford.EDU Subject: airport security Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 12:51:10 -0700 (PDT) i just got back from a trip to europe with a backpack full of taping gear (and more in my check-in luggage). The biggest hassle was long lines at security checkpoints in the US airports (didn't have the same line snafus in europe...maybe they have more practice!). As far as I could tell, the security checks (x-ray & baggage inspection) weren't all that different from 'the good old days'. If I wasn't random person #9 (to get pulled aside and thoroughly searched), or if the guard on the x-ray machine wasn't really watching (2/3 of the time?), I sailed through, despite having a laptop, mics, batteries, AD converter, preamp and miscellaneous cables all crammed into my carryon bag. When they did notice, I opened things up, explained that I was hand-transporting expensive recording equipment, and they'd wave me on. FWIW, the one time I got picked out for a random search (actually boarding a Paris->London train, but security protocols matched those at airports), the search was *much* more thorough than the times I got stopped at the xray machine. Of course, your mileage may vary... -rand0m ------------------------------ From: "Mike BB" Subject: the ultimate stealth vest Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 17:03:06 -0400 I thought some of you might be interested in this vest that was recently featured in Maximum PC. The details for each show are below. I prefer DAT or MD trades, but will consider cdr. If you have no DAT/MD cloning capabilities, but have DAT/MD Tool masters, then we can work something out. So, here are the shows, all recorded with the following setup: CSB>bass rolloff>M1. 10/13/01 - Birmingham, Alabama - Oak Mountain Amphitheater The horrid show in which in rained the entire time. During the show you can hear the rain hit my mics on numerous occasions. Also, I think some water ran down into my mic chord at one point and created some digital static in the left channel for about 4 minutes. I have cleared most of these problems up by converting this show to cdr and doing what I could. I was in Section E, Row LL, seat 15. 10/15/01 - Memphis, Tennessee - Midsouth Auditorium Dead center stage approximately 50 to 60 ft away. 10/16/01 - Nashville, Tennessee - Municipal Auditorium Dead center stage, 2nd row of seating about 100 or so feet away. Best show I have ever seen. As not so obviously stated above, I am looking for other Tool tapers to trade with, especially of the 97-98 and 01 tours. If you are not a Tool fan, but taped them please contact me as I have other items that may interest you. Thanks to all! peace, Travis __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Reply-To: vhorst@mn.rr.com Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 07:07:44 -0700 Hey folks. I've looked on their site but they don't mention any=20 specifics... Does anyone know what model and manufacturer=20 of the element that DPA uses to make their 4060/1 series=20 mics? I'm puttering with the idea of making my own mics for=20 stealth situations... I've got the necessary details to=20 build a lower end mic, but I've heard that you can get the=20 mic element that DPA uses above. It would require some=20 patience, but if I could build a pair of 4060/1-like mics=20 for <$100, it'd sure be worth my time. Any ideas?
