From: "Mike Hooker" <mhooker@optonline.net> Subject: off topic- sound card to amp problems Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 13:38:20 -0400 hi, i ve got a wierd problem connecting the line out jack from my PC soundcard to an input on my stereo reciever. it used to work fine, but suddenly, the amp was shutting itself down, some kind of failsafe. it only happened when the AUX is used, which is where the rca cables( 1/8 in. minijack cable to rca's) from the card are plugged into.you can actually see a spark jump from the jack to the soundcard input when you connect them. i plugged in a protable cd walkman to the cables, and all worked fine, so i dont think there are shorts in the rca cables. i believe its got to do with proper grounding of the units. the reciever has a two prong, polarized plug. i ran a ground cable fromn the chassis of the reciever to the chassis of my pc. touching the ground cable to the PC chassis also causes a spark. with the two units grounded together, the amp works, but the monitor display behaves funny, it gets jiggly. i disconnected the ground and havent used the sound cars since. i'm thinking of grounding both the pc and amp chassis to a cold water pipe, which i guess would be the ultimate of grounds. if anyone has any ideas about this , please let me know before i blow up the pc, the map, or both. thanks much take at look at my music trading list http://www.oe-pages.com/ARTS/Ballet/mikehooker or if it doesnt work, use this: http://pages.zdnet.com/mikehooker/hookstradingpage have fun, Mike Hooker

From: "Hood Rat" <el_baracho@hotmail.com> Subject: Need Help w/ Sony PCM R300 Problem Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 13:18:05 -0700 Whats up fellow heads- In the past few weeks my Sony R300 has been scarfing up tapes when I press rewind. Yesterday I tried to rewind a tape and the machine blinked and read WAIT a few times, following that it read CAUTION and I can't get the deck to do anything, not even eject the tape. I've only owned this deck for a few years and never have had a single problem. I bought it new and it have treated it as if it were the last deck on earth. I was hoping someone out there could be gracious enough to enlighten me on what to do. Where is the best/cheapest place to get it repaired if I can't fix it myself? I live in the booming metropolis of San Francisco. From: Eugene Hu <eugene@overture.com> Subject: Re: Moisture and Mics Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 14:09:18 -0700 I store all my capsules in ziploc bags with dessicant packs that I bought from a camera store. The dessicant packs (actually louvered clear plastic boxes filled with silica gel) get microwaved when they start to change color. Their tone of the mics (AKG & Sanken) definitely changes when they get damp. I live in L.A.; those of you in wetter climates may need to be more diligent. -Eugene

From: "ev" <ericv@nyc.rr.com> Subject: Fwd: APB -> New Orleans Radiators - Stolen Equipment Truck Reply-To: "ev" <ericv@nyc.rr.com> Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 20:34:57 -0400 Apologies in advance for the crosspost. Last night or very early this morning the fully loaded Radiators' equipment truck was stolen from the St. Charles/Josephine Street area. It is a 28-foot Isuzu truck from Enterprise, white with the green Enterprise logo on the side, license plate B450206. (ed: in New Orleans, LA) Equipment includes irreplaceable guitars and other instruments. If any of you see this truck or have any information about who may have taken it, please call the police immediately. As we work with the police and insurers, we will publicize equipment serial numbers, etc. across the country. We are an alert and far reaching community. Let's find the truck and the stuff on it and the lowlife scumbags who did this, and keep one of our favorite bands on the stage making the music we have loved for so many years and so desperately need at this time. Latest news: The truck was found -- empty. The search for the gear continues, of course. All scheduled gigs will be happening with personal and rented gear. List of all individual gear will be forthcoming. Be aware that their instruments were in there including: Reggie's A-Bass custom made black quilted finish Dave's Strat Vintage White (looks yellow) Budda Amps Boss Pedals and others. Franks Noble & Cooley Drum kit with Paiste cymbals Camile's new Paul Reed Smith and I think vintage Les Paul Mesa Boogie Heartbreaker head Ed's Technics Keys and Goff/Hammond Organ with Leslie Camile's red Chet Atkins signature acoustic electric model and his brown Ibanez were also on the truck. Please keep your eyes open and please politely post this to other lists and newsgroups. If you have any info that would help you can email me or bluzman@fishheads.net or get in touch with the band thru their website www.radiators.org peace, further... e

From: Gordon Gidluck <gidluck@swbell.net> Subject: RE: Buffer overruns on slave drives... Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 08:23:36 -0500 Andy, It is best to have each drive as masters on separate IDE channels. If you have IDE based CDROM, put those as slaves on the channels. Make sure that the devices are all DMA compatable, and make sure that DMA is working. DSKBENCH.EXE (from www.sesa.es) is a useful utility which can assist you in determining your drives throughput and how busy your cpu is in handling disk I/O. It runs from a DOS window in Windows. Your cpu % should be less than 10% busy if DMA is working. My older 200mHz system shows only 4-8% busy with a Maxtor 7200rpm drive and DMA enabled. If you have an 800mHz system or faster this will probably be 2% or less.
