From: "Hugh Stevenson" <hugh@wco.com> Subject: iso Jesse Winchester shows Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 12:02:15 -0700 I was so looking forward to seeing Jesse tour with Guy Clark; unfortunately, he was unable to get into the country. I guess the govt is unclear on the difference between terrorists and pacifists (Jesse chose Canada over Viet Nam way back in the 60s). Please help me get my Jesse fix! Looking for any shows, as I have none by him. Especially looking for shows in California - I've seen him many times in LA in the 70s and northern CA since then. I do have an eclectic list to offer from for trades. DATs or CDs preferred. I'm also looking for Van Morrison 12/12/93 in Petaluma, CA or any show from Cotati thanks, Hugh I will send a free copy of Bob Dylan Newport '64 and '65 (1 CD) to first 2 US members who contact me with the digest# and their address
From: Klay Anderson <klay@klay.com> Subject: Blumlein Recording, Ground Loops Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 13:32:01 -0600 "Nick Georges" <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: seeking blulein recordings Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 13:11:59 -0400 > Hey all.... I'm completely in love w/this style of stereo recording. It is excellent, but let's understand some Blumlein history: Quoted: Alan Dower Blumlein, the EMI sound engineer, was working on stereo recordin= g and disc-cutting in the Twenties. On 14th, December, 1931,=A0 Blumlein filed = a British Patent Specification entitled "Improvements in and relating to Sound-transmission, Sound-recording and Sound-reproducing systems. " Blumlein's invention "consists in a system of sound transmission wherein th= e sound is picked up by a plurality of microphone elements and reproduced by = a plurality of loud speakers, comprising two or more directionally sensitive microphones and/or an arrangement if elements in the transmission circuit o= r circuits whereby the relative loudness of the loud speakers is made dependent upon the direction from which the sounds arrive at the microphones." Blumlein externalized the binaural effect using loudspeakers. The most important task in Blumlein's patent was to provide a better front stage sound for movies shown in theaters. Another patent of Blumlein covering what we called "Stereophonic" now was filed on 14th, June, 1933. This patent made big improvement in sound reproduction over mono, but it still had fewer problems which were called the "Blumlein Shuffler". Blumlein's basic stereo triangle can be greatly improved upon using his own suggestions for additional loudspeakers and other corrections to yield home music theater sound fields perhaps not perfect or fully accurate but realistic enough to convince one's ear-brain system that they are listening to a live musical events. Blumlein also developed the stereo cutting system= , which was introduced over 30 years later by microgroove stereo LPs. He invented M-S coincident pair recording, the simplest stereo recording system. The widely used "Ambisonics" system nowadays is simply Blumlein's stereo system extending into three dimensions, i.e. it is capable of encoding sound courses from any direction in space, including vertical and horizontal.=20 And also: "Mike Hooker" <mhooker@optonline.net> Subject: off topic- sound card to amp problems Asked with no spell checker: > i ve got a wierd problem connecting the line out jack from my PC soundcar= d to > an input on my stereo reciever. it used to work fine, but suddenly, the a= mp > was shutting itself down, some kind of failsafe. it only happened when th= e AUX > is used, which is where the rca cables( 1/8 in. minijack cable to rca's) = from > the card are plugged into. you can actually see a spark jump from the jac= k to > the soundcard input when you connect them. i plugged in a protable cd wa= lkman > to the cables, and all worked fine, so i dont think there are shorts in t= he > rca cables. i believe its got to do with proper grounding of the units. You have what is called a ground loop; your two component chassis are on different AC paths that cause their grounds to be at different voltage potentials. What you should use is a two-channel audio isolation transformer; we have these high-quality units in stock for only US$59. The= y isolate the two systems ground path. From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@mediaone.net> Subject: ProgWest Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 19:57:56 -0400 Hey Now! Any Southern California tapers into PROG or Spacerock?? There is a great festival coming up in a couple weeks! Avery Hall, Pitzer College Claremont, CA (East of Los Angeles) November, 10 2001 These great bands are playing: Djam Karet Deadwood Forest Glass Maximum Indifference ...plus special guest Erik Norlander Djam Karet is the headliner and is really into improvisation. This is their only performance for the rest of this year and possibly longer. Anybody that loves the Dead's spacey exploratory jams, SCI's spacey jams, moe.'s spacey jams or Phish's ambient jams would totally dig this festival. Don't get me wrong these guys rock out too! Djam Karet has been written up in Relix; most recently in the April/May issue. Go to this website for ALL the info that you need: http://www.progwest.com/ You can get links to the bands and soundbites, as well. There will be vendors there selling hard to find CD's, videos etc. PLEASE contact me, if you or anyone you know plans on attending this event. Space Is Deep D-Rider

From: "Paul" <prennix@fortnet.org> Subject: clone cable length? Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 18:31:03 -0600 Hiya Dat Heads- I am wondering if cable length makes a difference when cloning from one dat deck to another. I am going from: Sony DTC 75ES to Sony A7 - both home decks. I want to keep one of these decks by my computer for doing transfers and one by my home stereo - distance 40 ft. I could also keep both decks by the stereo and run a cable from one of them to my computer (that same 40 ft) to do transfers. If there is no difference, if this should even be done, I would prefer to keep both decks 40 ft. away. So is there loss or an increase in errors if I run a cable that long between these decks? Any advice? TIA Colorado Paul -who finally isn't a unidecker anymore! prennix@fortnet.org

From: "Winnie Olmer" <who@sover.net> Subject: 48kHz vs 44.1kHz recording Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 09:35:46 -0400 I never listen to DATs... I always transfer to CDR. Is there any benefit recording at 48kHz if I end up burning to CDR in the end anyway? When transferring the DAT from my Tascam DA-30 (48kHz) going into my Dio2448 sound card (44.1kHz), does it do some sort of "averaging" in effect? So with the better 48kHz source the resulting 44.1kHz sound would be that much better than had I recorded the show at 44.1kHz also? Or would this be negligible? Or... I have no idea what I'm talking about.... thanks winnie ================================== "Imagine there's no countries, It isn't hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, No religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace..."-John Lennon Winnie Olmer mailto:who@sover.net ==================================
