I was there for Tori Amos on 10/6 and 10/7. Security consisted
simply of: "Do you have a camera?" They *were* checking bags,
however I don't see any issues with getting gear in. YMMV.

Hello. I am sorry to trouble the list. I am looking for some of the
following on CD-R...
- Healing Sixes (Jason Bonham's latest band)
- OzzFest from the Blossom Music Center, Cleveland this past Summer
(for my nephew, he will think I am so cool!)
- Nice sound quality Dixie Dregs or Steve Morse
I have plenty to trade. Again, sorry to bother the list. Thanks!

Subject: Apple's iPod - implications
Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2001 09:06:23 US/Eastern
Hello, all.
I recently have been thinking about the implications for live tapers of Apple's
iPod (which has the following specs):
o 5 gigs of storage
o Hard drive based
o Firewire transfer to and from your computer
o About as compact as you can get (4" x 2" x 0.7")
o Along with being a "killer app" mp3 player, also acts as a firewire external
hard drive
I mean, if they slapped an quality audio in (their outs are supposedly pretty
damned pristine) and a decent A/D on that unit, it would be *the* best stealth
recording device ever...think about it:
o no tapes to bugger with and therefore PAY for
o about nine *hours* record time, *un*compressed at 16bit/44.1kHz
o small as all hell (again, approx. 4" x 2" x 0.7")
o light @ 6 ounces
o five-hour battery life (probably less in record mode, but still...)
This would be a stealth taper's delight, don't you think?
You can see the unit at http://www.apple.com/ipod

Note: this is from my own analysis of the circuitry and by direct
measurements with a multimeter and/or o-scope. I'm happy to be
corrected if I'm wrong.
The OEM AT-853's with the AT-8531 battery box supplied a bit over
1V of bias voltage to each mic. These boxes have a simple pre-amp
that makes up for the low bias voltage. These boxes have an XLR
jack and when hooked up to 48V, they bypass the preamp and feed the
capsules about 5V. The OEM mics have 3 wire cables with a separate
voltage supply line whereas the SP versions use a two wire setup (and
I'm not sure if they use the same FET board as the OEM's). I don't
think there is anyway to get a balanced output from the 2-wire mics
without transformers (or rewiring the mic body). With the OEM's,
Any more than 14V to the mic body and you could pop the FET board
(According to an AT tech). I'm not sure how much the SP bodies will
take, but I wouldn't recommend anymore than the 9V that their battery
boxes supply (your 12V supply is probably OK).

Subject: seeking advice about mics
Date: Thu, 01 Nov 2001 22:10:27 +0530
Hi. With the excellent advice I have always got on Dat-heads I have
collected two decks (a Tascam DA-P1 and a Sony ES60), mics, soundcards,
software and used it all to tape my wife's shows. Now I want you
great guys to help me take the next step.
I want to buy some headworn and/or lavalier mics (4 to 6 in all) so
that I can mic each musician separately. Initially I will be mixing
it to stereo for my DA-P1 but when I can afford to input 5 tracks
to a laptop I want to go that route. Regular mics and stands are
too heavy to travel with. I have thought about taking signals from
the sound reinforcement mics, but finally decided I want a totally
independent outfit.
Please tell me:
How is the Shure SM10A for singers? Which variant do you prefer
and why? (SM12A, 512, plain 10A). Is WH20 also another variant or
is it something different? Once adjusted does the mic position
stay adjusted or does it need to be watched? Can one turn the mic
away from mouth and use it for an acoustic instrument? Other model
suggestions within $150 apiece?
Is the idea of using an omnidirectional lapel mic such as the SM11
insane? For voice? for instruments?
Good sources you recently bought stuff from?
Any other advice you have for me?
Many thanks in advance.
Hari Sahasrabuddhe

the Lucid AD2496 to my set up? Any advice would greatly help."
==============================
I inquired about this unit with Marc Nutter last Spring and he highly
recommended it if used in a rack. The problem with using it as a portable is
power, its AC! Its advertised as "convenient half rack package" so it may
look like a portable but I don't think it was designed to be.
I ended up buying an AD2k+, which also works great with soundboards and
which by the way, is still for sell! Email me if you're interested in
purchasing one that is hardly been used (like new!) with no
scratches/blemishes at all. l8r -Rob.

I pronounce it like the diabolical mailman guy in Seinfeld: "Noo-man"
This dude insists it is properly pronounced "Noy-man", which, to me, sounds
a little like someone trying to be extra-euro at a poetry slam.
That dude was right - who knows what he thought of your
mis-pronunciation. German and Swiss pronunciation of 'eu' sounds like 'oi'
(according to Webster's). So the correct pronunciation would sound like
"noi-man." Of course you can pull a George Bush Sr and purposefully
mispronounce the name to show your displeasure with Gregory Neumann and the
users of his mic's.
Take Care,
Delano

Hey everyone, I have a Waveterminal 2496 but I cannot get any audio out of the card. Everything seems to be working fine (driver properly installed, program menu up and running). I am trying to use this card as my the preferred soundcard for all of my computer audio needs (I have disabled the integrated soundcard.) I cannot get any audio out of the speakers, either when I connect my dat (M1) into the coaxial in, or if I am running a program that should have audio. I am using the 1/4" analog outs going into the subwoofer for my speakers. If anyone has any idea what could be wrong, please drop me a line. I am running 2k pro. Thanks a lot

my 2 cents...
the only split you should bother with is if the running time is longer than
one CD-R (74 or 80 minutes depending on what length CD-R you want to use for
burning), don't break the file up into seperate tracks unless you want to do
that for some specific reason like encoding certain songs to MP3 for posting
on the internet or whatever
to add track marks when burning from a single wavefile just write a simple
"cuesheet" which maps out where the track marks are to go
several programs support the use of cuesheets, i use both EAC and CDRWIN for
burning with cuesheets (see the links below)
i find it alot easier/faster to not mess with breaking up files at all, in
fact when i transfer a DAT longer than a disc long i stop the transfer just
past the appropriate breaking point & work on the first disc as is, then
rewind the tape a couple minutes & finish the transfer to a seperate file
and edit out the leader bits i don't need, so i guess you could say i don't
even do a single "split" at all!
EAC is free (postcardware) and is also the BEST program out there for
copying audio (it does error checking during the Digital Audio Extraction
process that no other program does as well or as thoroughly)
here are some links that might be of interest to you in your quest to master
DAT-->CD-R
EAC: (best reading program, also other functions like writing, wave editor,
etc)
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/
http://pages.cthome.net/homepage/eac/
http://www.ping.be/satcp/

CDRWIN: (reading/writing/backups/etc)
http://www.goldenhawk.com/
CDWAVE: (for splitting files)
http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~mjmlooijmans/cdwave/
CDRCUE: (aids in writing cuesheets; i like this but also sometimes just use
a text editor)
http://www.dcsoft.com/prod03.htm
COOLEDIT2K: (i use this to capture the audio transfer & edit the wavefiles)
http://www.syntrillium.com/cooledit/index.html
if you want to learn more about cuesheets or have any questions email me &
i'll try to help you off-list
others will have different methods that they like to work with, your
preferences will depend on what you get used to i guess, there are many ways
to do this!
good luck,
