Any suggestions on what works best? Are stand alone burners the best way to go? Also since cdr's need a 44.1 kHz rate is getting it transfered from 48 kHz a hard step to make? I've never even paid attention to this before, but the dat deck has a switch to change it to 44.1 from 48. Can I switch this to record live shows on dat tapes at 44.1 kHz. Would that cause any problems or would it keep me from having an extra hassle when transferring to cd? Thanks in advance for any help, Eric _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: Bob Siegl Subject: Teac DAP 20 and Batteries, etc Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 11:15:28 -0800 (PST) I have a TEAC DAP 20, 2 internal batteries, Owner's Manual, and Power Supply (with a custom cable that can be used with an external battery should you want to look into that) all in the original box. I've been told the batteries and ps are worth $100 each since they are so hard to find...I bought new and used for some Grateful Dead taping, then put on the shelf. The deck is in good condition. (no amplification included) I used their circuit for my Shure SM81's, and it works great. The circuit uses two 9 volt transistor radio batteries to provide 18 volts for the mikes. There are a few resistors and capacitors. The SM81's require a minimum of 12 volts. There is no reason why you can not use the same circuit for higher voltages, like 48 volts, except remember to increase the voltage rating of the capacitors for the higher voltage. You may also wish scale up the value of the resistors, but it may not be necessary. The batts last a long time and you can be assured of a quiet power source since there is no active components to step up voltage. The box I used is plastic and one-half the size of a -D8. (A metal box would be better for shielding reason) If I left the XLR connectors out, it could have been a lot smaller. ------------------------------ From: "Vince Horst" Subject: Q: Improving electret microphone performance Reply-To: vhorst@mn.rr.com Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001 12:18:42 -0800 Out of interest's sake I've been trying to track down some=20 information on how you might approach improving the=20 performance/response of an existing electret microphone. Just this past weekend I was taping a gig at a local club and managed to get a board patch. Actually I set up from the digital output of a Fostex D4 (?) rack mounted deck using the Sony 7 pin coaxial cable into the M1 (XLR out to RCA barrel to the M1. At several points during the show I noticed the levels "banging" and asked the sound man if he would mind lowering them for me on the Fostex which he was kind enough to do. When I got home and looked for the points where I knew I was overloading, everything sounded fine. In fact had I known, I would have just left them. Apparently the M1 has a rather high threshold for overloading. Doesn't bother me, it's good to know. I guess I'll view it as a safety net. Brian O'Connell << From: "Ragan Todd" Subject: Peak level meters on M1 Date: Tue, 06 Nov 2001 18:27:31 On more than one occasion, I have had my peak recording levels show "OVER" while taping a show. When I have listened to the show later, I don't hear the dreaded clipping everyone tries to avoid. Are the M1's meters just extra conservative? As an experiment, I have purposely recorded at higher levels to hear the result. Here's the process: I connect my M1's line out to a bass rolloff filter and then to my CD burner's analog inputs (this also reduces the excessive bass of this recording). I play the DAT, making sure the burner's meters never exceed 0 and burn to a CD-RW. I then reverse the connections, playing the CD-RW through the burner's analog outputs, the rolloff filter, and then into the line in of the M1. I intentionally set the recording levels so that the average peak is at 0 and the highest peaks register "OVER." I end up with a recording that has less bass, higher volume, and no distortion that I can hear, even at high volume on my home speakers. Although most traders wouldn't want an analog copy, I end up with a better sounding listening copy of that concert. To ask my question a different way, is there a safe recording level above that which registers "OVER" on the M1 meters? Anyone else experience the same thing with their M1s? Reply-To: Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 19:16:45 -0500 Hi there, I bought a pair of dpa 4060 mics after much research, here's what I found. These mics can be powered by 5v to 52v...the data sheet on their website references this and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The SPL handling of these mics is not affected as long as you meet at least 5vdc to the capsule. A sony m1 will not produce enough voltage but thats not because it runs off 3 volts because voltage can easily be stepped up it simply does not output 5 volts though. I am using a DPA powersupply I bought from location sound corporation a very reputable tv/movie industry supplier. The power supply ran me $135. I then run line in to a d7. The previous owner of my mics used a more preferable setup and ran the 4060's in to a Lunatec v2 and used the v2 for powering. If you decide to go this route with either the v2 or another pre-amp which provides phantom power I have two of the microdot to xlr adapters (they are passive) which I could part with. In reguards to your question about the jecklin disc if you search through the dat-head archives I askeed the same question about 4 months ago even was asking about 4060 mics.... I was informed by many who had omni experience that for an on-stage setup it's the way to go but further back i.e. taper's sections; Dan Healy's technique for critically spaced omni's is the way to go. The technique is similar, mics on stand, 7" apart with capsules facing 90 degrees off source (outwards). This provides great imaging...just make sure you don't use the acoustic compensating windscreen it only alters the the on-axis high frequencies (good for AB miking setups though). I hope this helps. Chris Original Post: hey there, i'm looking at a pair of 4060 mini omnis and was wondering about how to power them, right now i have a pcm-m1 that has the plug-in power on the mic input, i was wondering if it can correctly bias a set of 4060s or if i need to either get the DPA battery box (9v)to power them or a seperate preamp w/phantom power and the 48v phantom microdot->XLR adapter?? since the m1 runs off of 3 volts, the plug in power bias can't be more than 2 volts or so, i'm wondering if that will be enough headroom for the mics or not...also, does anyone know if the p48 adapter is active or passive? on the recording side, i've run jecklin disc recordings before in the studio with radio shack onmi condenser capsules and i really like the 'hemisphere' pickup pattern, but certainly haven't run one at a show, i know that MBHO makes a jecklin disc, but other than that haven't heard or seen too much about it...anyone else ever heard any jecklin disc recordings?? l8r..Nick ------------------------------ From: "seethreepo2" Subject: ISO these 1997 further fest shows Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 16:51:28 -0800 I'm looking for the Black Crowes sets from the following Further Festival 1997 dates.. if you have the jam portion as well thats a bonus. june 20 west palm beach Fla july 3rd queens NY july 11 hershey PA july 15 burgettstown Pa (pittsburgh) july 22 noblesvillle IN I"m also looking for anyone who may have taped the band prior to 1998 or the Jimmy Page tour I have many many masters to offer in trade from a wide variety of artist from Van Morrison to Metallica I have 6 Black Crowes masters from a variety of tours 96, 98 , 2001 and can do cdrs (with za2 digital soundcard ) or dat clones Lastly I have a substantial and diverse low gen vhs collection including a 1st gen GD video one week before Jerry's last show.
