I agree with Mark (Hi Mark)... I love my M1, it's small and is easy to
get anywhere with. Batteries are not a problem either. With the
included Sony batteries I still get over 3 hours of recording (got my
deck back in '98), and can rewind the DAT and listen for a bit on the
way home with one charge. With 1600mAH batteries I'm set home free
without a problem listening to the whole deal afterwards.
For the times I do an all day festival, I buy one set of Lithium
batteries. I did all of the Bridge Show last month in Mt. View with one
set for each day. Batteries had enough power left to listen to a few of
the DATs on the flight back home.
I can get away with one set of rechargeables for any show I attend, and
the full day ones I either bring an extra set or go with the Lithium's
and never worry about power.

There is a built-in mic which is okay for voice
but picks up a lot of hard disc noise, totally
no good for music. Analog in is line level only,
so you'll need to use an external pre-amp, or
something like the Zefiro Inbox to amplify and
do the AD conversion (the Archos MP3 Recorder takes
analog line-in or digital in, both with 1/8"
plugs). If there were a way to record PCM in,
instead of mp3, I think I'd use the Inbox over
the internal ADs. Since it's going to mp3
anyway, I have purchased a really small preamp from
Sound Professionals which runs on a 9V battery.
The Archos runs about 7 hours on its charge
(4 AA NiMH, comes with an extra set, you can
get higher rated ones that should give slightly better
times).
The Sound Professionals web site had some results
of testing with live recording. I've fooled around
but have not tried using it at concerts yet.

If anybody has been taping Strangefolk on their recent tour, I'd love to
hear from you. The show here in Austin was cancelled due to bad weather
(up to 9-in of rain depending on what part of the city you were in), and
I'd love to hear their stuff with the new keyboard player.
Peace,
Wayne

word of warning: new security procedures @ universal amph, la.
metal detectors, big airport-style walk through deals.
went off for cell phones, coins, keys, bowls...
i chickened out assuming certain bust.
my question is: what decks/mics/batteries can be rated "metal detector
safe", "maybe safe" or "unsafe" ?
sorry if this has been settled here before.
if anyone did record crimson 11-15, please drop me a line, have several kc
masters to trade. thanks.

Subject: Desperate! Zefiro Inbox overload??

Just did a Phil Lesh show and had "issues". I have three more shows next
week and need to resolve this ASAP!!
I am trying to determine the source of my problems. I have some low cost
cardioids (AT853). They run into a battery box, then into my Zefiro and on
to my Sony D8. Twice now at Phil Lesh shows I have pegged the Sony even with
the Zefiro preamp set to zero... no gain. The question becomes, is it the
mics or is it that even at zero, the Zefiro still has gain and overloads the
Sony.. Of course... I am using the 7-pin digital in on the Sony using an
Oade brot. cable, so the Sony has no levels to set.
thanks for the feedback!!
