Or is it that Win2k has problems with the Zolrtix/Midiman chipset? :) No problems with 98, not sure about XP. Of course, I may recall incorrectly. Might want to check the DATheads Digest Archives. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I still don't use that mode, but the tape plays beautifully through my cheap speakers. JH

Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 20:50:40 -0800 (PST) I own a da-p1 (bought brand new) and i really love it...but one thing you may wanna think about is how big this freakin thing is...I pretty much have no chance to go stealth with it where they are searching bags (unless they aren't searching people) ...also, the battery life is dismal...the battery it comes with only lasts 2 hours (if you aren't using the phantom power option) max ...I am in the process of building a battery pack for it now(thanks Nigel), but it'll add 3 pounds to my bag ....I imagine the d8 uses regular batteries and lasts much longer, right? Anyways, keep these things in mind when you are trying to make your decision..Also let me say I LOVE my da-p1, it totally rocks, and I'm glad I got it..I've made dozens of really awesome quality recordings with it..It's just the size tends to be a lil annoying at times .... From: "Hendu" <hendu2@newsguy.com> Subject: Re:Transferring dats to disc Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 08:27:13 -0500 Here is a site i've found to be useful. http://www.stereophile.com/shownews.cgi?83 Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 08:47:28 -0500 (EST) I have a question for all you techies out there. I just received a Sony rcd-w1 standalone cd burner, and I would like to transfer my dats to cdr's with this unit. The unit only excepts "audio only discs", and I was wondering if or how I might be able to trick the unit, so I can use regular cdr discs instead. I have heard of this method being a possibility. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Michael
From: JoE McCabe <energyi@mccabe.net> Subject: Taper Friendly, Ian Moore Date: 20 Nov 2001 09:08:38 -0800 Dear DATheads: I'd encourage tapers to check out Ian Moore's shows. I just saw an accoustic show at the Palms in Davis CA, where Ian was encouraging taping, in fact he suggested microphones as opposed to board patching. I think things might have changed since the last FROM "list of bands that allow taping as of 4/07/99": **************** Ian Moore <Austin, TX> He is cool with taping but his manager, Jan Mirkin, is not. Steer clear of her at all costs. Stealth is required. Ian recently was quoted as saying: "We don't necessarily discourage taping, though it is conditional on people being ethical. In other words, no selling, or in any way making money off our music. So far everything has been cool." **************** Whom-ever is tracking this, (if it is Kurt Andrew Kemp continued thanks), please be advised of more recent taper friendly attitudes. BTW, Ian's web site is http://www.ianmoore.com . Quite a talented performer, not in the mainstream music business. Hope this helps. JoE

From: cook@eklektix.com Subject: FTP access to the dat-heads archive is disabled. Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 12:37:51 -0700 Just a heads up, the dat-heads archive access via FTP has been disabled due to a known security hole with the server software, wu-ftpd. I will re-enable ftp when a fixed version becomes available. Hopefully this won't be a big problem for anybody since the archive is still available from the web. From: Nick Georges <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: 9v battery options ??? Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 15:33:58 -0500 Hi Folks... A continuing effort to build a portable battery solution for my Edirol UA-5. It's requirements are 9v, 450mah. My thoughts.... 12v lead-acid battery w/a 12v-9v converter. I built one, but I'm concerned about the noise that may (or may not) be added by the voltage transformer. My configuration was a female DC car lighter jack attached to the 12v. Then, a RS 12-9v DC car plug cord. I've all ready got a good (good for radio shack) 12v to "whatever" selectable voltage DC plug with the appropriate jacks to hook up to the Edirol. Any input on what sort of noise this will introduce, if any? No more than the wall wart would do, but the wall wart is usually not as close in proximity as this battery>DC voltage converter would be in the field. 9.6v remote control race car battery. You can get these at the shack w/a recharger for about $30. 1600mha. That would be the bare minimum. Picking up an additional 1000mah battery would only add another $20 and wouldn't be a bad idea I suppose. Not sure if the Edirol will tolerate the 9.6v though. I would think so, but not sure I want to risk it. Edirol USA has absolutely no clue about any of their products in regards to engineering specs (or even simple performance, like dynamic range). I have to peruse these questions directly from Japan. Ugh. C or D battery sled. Huge mah availability and relatively small form factor. Probably about $40-50 to construct with rechargeable MH batteries. However...with the individual batteries pumping out either 1.2 or 1.25v, I again run into the voltage issue. I can supply either 8.4v or 9.6v. Either of these two options would supply enough juice to run it for many hours. 9v Battery sled is ridiculously expensive. $200 worth of rechargeable MH 9v batteries (20 of them) would supply 3000mah. Simple to build, but too much money. Any ideas???? -- "Stereo is merely an attempt to create the illusion of reality through the willing suspension of disbelief" -R.
