Anybody got good recs for service centers here in the Seattle Area? I have
a SONY PCM-R300 that just like that just started to make these weird
solenoid clicking noise (from machine) and sends the error meters to the
roof. There is digi-noise from the output when this happens. I only got
about 60 hours on the head and have made attempts to dry clean it with tape
to no avail.
Thanks,
ANDY

I am getting a new computer and want to put a soundcard in it. I have heard
that the Zoltrix are very good cheap cards. What I need to know is if the
card will accept 48khz DAT signals or only 44.1. Thanks for any info.

I was there tonite, but

I almost never post for things

Subject: Macintosh Home Studio For Sale
Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 21:14:25 -0800
I'm in the process of breaking up my home recording set-up. I'd prefer to
sell the entire rig to one buyer, but I'll break things up into individual
pieces if the demand is there.
To explain: I'm an archivist of a prominent jamband and digital video editor
by trade, so this system has been configured and maintained with the utmost
care and attention to detail. Purchasing this rig would provide you with a
complete turnkey system, giving you with the ability to digitize your DATs,
edit and encode your audio files, and your burn your audio to CD. My reason
for selling is that I'm in the process of moving from a studio work station
to a more portable, laptop based set-up.
Here's what's I'm selling:
- Macintosh Power PC G4 dual 500 mhz
(256 MB RAM / 85 GB HD @ 7200 RPM)
(Built-In Removable Media Backups: 4.7 GB DVD-RAM Drive, 100 MB Zip drive)
- LaCie 19" Electron Blue Monitor
- Adaptec 2930 SCSI Card
- Altec Lansing three piece Cube speaker system (includes 40 W subwoofer)
- DigiDesign AudioMedia III digital audio I/O soundcard (digital SPDIF
in/out, analog RCA in/out) with ProTools SE audio editing software
- Plextor PlexWriter 8/20 external SCSI CD-R drive/burner
- Fostex D5 DAT deck with AES/EBU -> SPDIF in and out converters
Most units come with their original manuals, boxes, remote controls, and
documentation. Most importantly, everything works well and has served me
and my business well and without hassle.
Total asking price: $2700 OBO. Buyer pays shipping and insurance.
Feel free to make specific inquiries about any of the items.
Thank you for your time,
Max Dawson

Got a little problem with getting a little pop at the very end of CDR's
that I have made transfering Dat to CDR via Midiman Audiophile 2496 >
Soundforge XP 4.5 > CD Wave > HD > Plextor PX-W1210TA. I can't hear a
pop on my Portable Cd player or my computer player, but on my home deck
it is quite loud. Anyone know how to fix it? I have tried the digest
search without any luck. Peace, Marc

Subject: Delano's TaScam CDRW700
Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 21:44:18 -0800 (PST)
TaScam took almost 2 months to send mine back broken. It took over 3
months for mine to get resolved. These only come with a 3 month
warranty, so, mine was gone longer then it had been working.
TaScam was replacing entire blocks at a time and still hadn't a clue.
They said the Drive, Power, and Brain had been swapped. Just the serial
number was original.
To troubleshoot something at the component level is a talent that is
near extinction. Miniteurization is turning our gear into black boxes
and mass production makes repairs impractical.
The CDRW700 is a shakey piece of gear in my opinion. I've met people
that own them... we exchange war stories. None has any confidence that
we can trust it 100%, and are just glad that they're working for the
time being. I haven't had to re-boot mine (by unplugging) for along
time now, but, still regret buying it.
I'm actually IMPRESSED that Mr Plotnik was able to troubleshoot a
CDRW700 at the component level! He is a great asset to our community.
So.. welcome to the CDRW700 Club. Just remember the good times.

Subject: DATS for Sale!!!!!
Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 22:35:55 -0800
Hello there. After pondering the idea for quite a while. I decided to sell my
Phish DATS. After trading for several years, intensively tracking down the
best possible sources for Phish shows, I felt it was time for these DATS to
have a new home. Plus, although my love for Phish will never go away, I've
simply learned all that I can learn from them. I feel the need to apply it to
my own music. They are almost all exclusively taped on Maxell HS-4 90 meters,
always rewound to the top of the tape before stored, kept in cases, and kept
in a dust free DAT drawer cabinet I built. The going price for a Maxell HS-4
90 meter is $3.00 a tape according to Terrapin so I would like to get that
amount in return per tape. I've broken my list up into blocks of 20 tapes ($60
per block). I would like to sell them in these blocks since it would be the
easiest, most sane ( on my part) way to sell them. So if your interested and
can give these DATs a good home, please email me and I can send you a list to
choose from. Thanks!!

I purchased a pair of matched MC012's (card capsules only) about a month ago,
and would reccomend them. I have only made one recording with them, and
based on that one experience I am happy with the way they sound so far. I
haven't heard very many recordings from the AKG's, but the Oktavas do have
these advantages over them:
1) you can get them as a matched pair
2) they have card, hypercard, and omni capsules available.
Also, you can start out with just one pair (probably card) and buy more
pairs of capsules at a later time.
3) if you buy a matched pair, they come with a nice cedar box, and mic clips
that fit the mic bodies perfectly.
They do require phantom power (unlike the AKG's which, I think can be powered
by a 9V in each mic body), so if you have a D7/D8/D100/M1 you will have to
buy an external power supply. I am using the Denecke PS2, which costs around
$150.
Hope this helps,
Eric Angel
p.s. Everything I said is based on buying them from The Sound Room:

Hey there again. I have decided to sell my V2 to go
with something smaller as I find myself having to
stealth the bands that I enjoy. The V2 was purchased
this summer from Marc Nutter over at Sonicsense. It
has been used 11 times and kept in pristine condition.
It is as good as new and the original box is included.
This is easily the best portable 2-channel microphone
preamp on the market today as im sure most of you

Purchased new 9/30/01, run for 10 shows, perfect condition. This is the older transformer input version, with three gain settings(+12/0/+6), features phantom power, xlr ins and outs, 1/8 in and out, low cut filters, runs on 6 alkaline AA batteries for about 10 hours. This unit is no longer available, it's been replaced by the psp3 which features right left gain, not so good for low profile/stealth applications. Purchased new for 945.00, asking 850.00 plus shipping. Thanks, Marc.

Hi folks, I'd like to disable the automatic writing of start IDs whenever
the analog input signal falls below a certain threshold. I know how to
adjust this threshold (between -12db and -60db) and the time that the signal
must be at or below this threshold (1 to 10 seconds) but is there any way to
completely turn off the feature? The manual doesn't seem to mention
anything, but I didn't know if any of you knew of an undocumented trick
that'd accomplish this. Thanks in advance for any help!

Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 18:01:45 -0500
Hi guys,
I really need to locate a manufacturer of a stealth mic that is no longer in prodiction (???).
It is a japanese mic that is roughly between 15 and 25 mm in diameter. Length is rougly an inch (2.5cm).
It is pahntom powered and is a card or a hypercard.
The shape of the mic is a flat front and the case is kind of bullet shaped.
Cost was around 400 a piece in 1991.
It seems that the company has ceased to exist but this is what I would like to know.
Doug at Oades thought that some of you might know, and he thought that it was a Japanese taper that made them.
Please, please, please look deep down in your memory and try to help me out here. I really need to locate these things.
Take care,
Thomas, Sweden
