performance is fine, but the analog performance is weak.

hey there, i'm kicking around getting a dds drive for doing
dat->wav transfers, at ~200 bucks they seem like a pretty viable
soultuion instead of getting a home deck but i'm wondering if
anyone has bought one of the "auido-ready" refurb'd dds drives
at:
http://www.mashek.com/DATdrives/index.html
i've heard some crazy stuff about doing firmware upgrades but it
doesn't look like it's necessary with these...?? i was also
wondering what the scoop is on the software used for the
transfer, i've seen some reviews of the stuff that's out there
but is there a favorite or a preferred package?? it looks like
some of the software is kinda sneaky about the sampling rate, so
if anyone has any thoughts on that i'd like to hear them....for
some reason dds transfers look too good to be true, pop a dat in
your computer, rip a 3 hour wave file and then all you have to
do is track it and burn to cd...way easier than having to
'record' it back into an audio program at 1X when you can do a
file transfer at 2X or 4X and the dds drives are waaaay cheaper
than a home deck......l8r...Nick

Hi DAT Heads,
Looking for someone who taped the Travis Los Angeles show from last October (I believe the date was 10/23/01) or have a copy and is willing to trade it on DAT or CDR. They played a killer rendition of AC/DC's "Back in Black".
I've the following to offer in trade (all are my CSHEB/DPA 4061 > M1 masters)
Travis - Warfield Theater SF - 10/25/01 w/Remy Zero
Travis - Icon Supperclub Palo Alto - 10/24/01 (promo acoustic gig)
Tenacious D - Warfield Theater SF - 10/31/01
U2 + No Doubt Oakland Arena 11/16/01 (tip of the heart)
Please contact me off the list if you have this show
Cheers

Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 21:00:59 -0500
First of all, I think this is my first post, so I hope it gets through. I
have a couple questions I'm hoping somebody can answer for me.
1.) I'm hoping to get a portable DAT recorder that I can record shows and
what not with. Are there and features that are particularly good? Are there
any models/brands that people could recommend, and where can I buy them for
a reasonable price?
2.) How do I convert something recorded on DAT to a CD? I assume I need a
digital sound card for my computer, right? What's good, and where can I get
a good one for a reasonable price?
Thanks for your help.

for field recording overseas. Please contact offlist for more info.

Subject: Delano & his magic Tascam CDRW700
Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 10:10:24 -0500
I have no idea who Bruce Morris is, but I would like to respond to his
comments about MY CDRW700. First, if someone says that they can fix the
unit in 2 weeks - guess what - I am going to hold them to that. Second,
the unit was barely 12 months old, and if I had known the extent to which
the unit was having problems, I would have called the place where I
purchased the unit to complain (I had the reboot issue from the start but
things got worse). Third, I purchased the 5-year warranty and expect at
least a minimum of service for what I paid.
You may not be aware of it, but some re-sellers are replacing the units
freely due to some of the problems. I would rather get an exchange for a
new unit than the run-around and being put on hold for the latest story in
what is actually wrong. The only time ProDigital called was to say they
needed my new credit card number (which they already had).
I have worked as a computer technician and IMO, not telling a customer what
is up, why there is a delay, etc is not the best way to go about being in
the repair business. In the package to ProDigital, I included my email,
tel#, and mailing address - I'm not sure why they couldn't email or call
when they were not able to determine the problem, or when they expected a
delay, or when they anticipated being able to ship. However, I did receive
an email from Paul after I complained here (Paul added that he had only
possessed the units for 7 weeks). If at any time, Paul or one of his
representatives had initiated contact to say there was a problem and fill
me in, I would never have posted here.
*** In the past, I have sent dat decks to ProDigital with amazingly quick
turnaround (and great quality work). That is the reason that I bypassed
the local, recommended repair center and shipped the units to Broomall, PA. ***
Unfortunately, Bruce, your opinion only helps those who are considering
purchasing the Tascam CDRW700 - trying to get what I paid for is clearly
the only available option to me. The proverbial clock is ticking on my
warranty and the unit does me no good sitting on a shelf somewhere in
Pennsylvania.
Since so many Tascam CDRW700's have been promoted in related trading
circles, I wonder what Gary Davis, Marc Nutter, Jim/Doug Oade, Dan from
AmDig, or Ken from Terrapin have to say about this unit and it's being
'shakey" (to quote Bruce). My unit was purchased 09/00 - is there a
revised/newer/better model?
If, as asserted here by Bruce Morris, the Tascam CDRW700 is so problematic,
why are so many still being sold?
Take Care,
Delano

the shows.

Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 15:08:14 -0800
Hello all,
I am selling (basically) my entire DAT/taping rig. I haven't
taped much in the last year or so (mostly from work) and I don't really
expect to tape much in the near-not-so-near future (for stuff other than
work, mostly unfortunately). Therefore, it makes more sense to sell some
of it...if my prices seem off, just let me know. I have not kept up to
date on the street prices of these units.
-Lunatec V2 - $900
unit #39, perfect working condition. cosmetically, it is missing the screw
on the front faceplate in the upper-right corner, and it is a bit
duller-looking than others. I do not abuse my equipment, but I don't carry
them around in hermetically-sealed cases, either. **see the eco-charge
stuff below**
-Sony PCM-M1 - $500
Has about 40-50 hours on the heads, entirely at shows. I have never done
anything with this deck except record at shows. Has some adhesive tape
residue on the front and the spring below the "play" button has gotten
smooshed - there just isn't as much travel when you press the button
anymore. but it works beautifully and always has. **see the eco-charge
stuff below**
-Sony PCM-R300 (with warranty) - $400
Has 660 hours on the machine, about 80% playback, and only about 200 hours
since the heads were replaced about 1.5 years ago. There are another 2
years on the RepairMaster warranty - I don't have the original paperwork,
but I have the warranty number.
-Oktava MK012 microphones (1 pair) - $400
Includes omni, hyper, and cardioid for each mic, along with a -10db pad
(screwed in-line between the body and the cap). Also a plastic carrying
case for each mic and set of caps. Mint condition.
-Audio-Technica 8410 shockmounts - $75 for pair
these are the standard ones - will make it $65 if you buy the mics, too.
-Shure A27M vertical mic mount - $40
allows for easier XY mic configuration
-Eco-Charge battery packs (2) - $140 for both and the charger and power cords
I have a dual-socket (2 female 4-pin connectors) Eco-Charge and a single
output (female 4-pin on a cable) "home-made" battery. Both are 6-volt. I
also have 1 power cord for the Sony M1 (or any sony portable, for that
matter) and another for the V2. I can power both the m1 and the V2 off the
dual-socket one for 4.5 hours. This is a package-deal ONLY with the 6-volt
SmartCharger. It's just too much of a pain, honestly, to sell batteries,
charger, and cables all separately.
thanks,
allan

Subject: Help w/D100>2496 Sound card
Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 18:59:46 -0500
Hey People,
After repeated attempts to get my Audiophile 2496 to record w/o
incident, I'm still trying. If anyone can shed some light on the
following problem I'd be grateful.
I record from my Sony D100>digi cable>Audiophile2496>HD (60G, 7200rpm)
using CD Wave. I monitor it and all sounds fine. When I play it back
or burn it, with the MAudio Control Panel>Hardware Settings>Master Clock
set to Internal Xtal (sync from internal clock) the .wav file will play
slow. If I set it to S/PDIF, the .wav file plays fine. Unfortunately,
as soon as my DAT deck goes to sleep mode, I loose the S/PDIF signal and
when I loose that I loose all sound from the wave file, except the nasty
feedback hum.
In case this helps, the computer has Win 98 SE, Intel 815EEA board,
800Mhz PIII, 512Meg of RAM and the HD is empty except the few attempts
that I've made on it (my D drive).
I've called their support but made it as far as "it's a problem with
synchronization" which really didn't solve much for me. So if anyone
has any suggestions, I'm listening!
Thanks!!
Peace,
Sean
