Hello everyone. First off, Paul@prodigital has fixed two of my dat decks and I am completely satisfied. Their service has been pretty quick and reasonably priced. I usually pay the extra and have Paul work on it pronto. In my anality I even called him a couple times to be sure my deck would be back in time for tour. He never seemed annoyed. Enough about that.
I'd like to offer these three Halloween sets for b&p.
Charlie Hunter: mbho 603/500>v2>ad1000
Galactic: kc5>V2>hhb from Robert Kwon. I'm not very familiar with scheops models, this had the ccm6 bodies i think.
KDTU: mbho603/200>mp2>modsbm1>dap1 ( my master)
Each will fit on one 90m, but just barely. I'll take the first five to respond.
PS-looking for Phil Fall. Have most of summer to trade.

I had a similar problem the other day when I was looking around for the
drivers and accessories for my Opcode SonicPort, which I would like to sell
to a DAT-Head that might use it more use for it than I, now that I have a
standalone burner. (FS: $100 + $5 shipping; e-me privately if interested).
As is widely known, after it was bought out by the Gibson guitar company in
1999, Opcode stopped making the DAT and Sonic port DAT s/pdif > PC .wav
gizmos. When I couldn't find my original floppy disk with the USB drivers,
I did a Google search for "Opcode SonicPort", and lo and behold, Opcode
still has a site with the drivers still available for download!
The drivers are at http://www.opcode.com/downloads/ in either Stuffit or
WinZip archive file flavors.
Hope this helps,

Gang,
Had the excellent opportunity to tape Slayer on Nov.11 at the State
Theatre in Portland, ME. Tapes came out pretty poorly actually due to the
terrible accoustics of the venue, but with some minor processing here and
there I managed to make it come out OK before I burned it to CD. So you can
have your choice of format: clone of original DAT, post-processed copy on
DAT, or post-processed copy on CD. The CD version is missing one song,
because the total show length was about 83 minutes and I wasn't going to
make a two-cd set out of this just to fit one more song on. Would like to
trade for more Slayer, but will take other offers. Will also do B&P for
DATs.

I would suggest placing the mics on stage for a matrix mix. Mics at the board
must usually be time-aligned to a delayed SBD feed in order to make the
arrival times the same. It's much easier, and less gear, to place the stage
mics in the same approximate plane as the instrument mics, so the delay is not noticeable.
If you can use the stage snake, that's a big help. Place the crowd mics on
the stage, away from the main speakers if you can, facing out at the crowd
(maybe x/y front center on the stage or split 6-20 feet?). Run the mics
cables right into the snake, then out at the FOH area (the soundboard is
referred to as "front of house") plug the snake channels into your favorite
preamp (the mackie 1202 would be fine if it has phantom power, but I bet you
paid more for the V2, so use that!). Plug the output of the V2 into two
channels of the mackie and the main outputs of the mackie into the apogee.
Now connect the board patch into two other mackie channels, get your
headphones cranked up, and make a mix. Perhaps to find your mix you would
start with only the mics signal before the SBD turns on. Get a level with the
folks up front yelling- have someone yell at the mics from the crowd area if
you need to in order to get a strong level check- they'll be yelling during
the show! Set your lunatec the way you think it needs to go, then bring the
signal into the mackie and turn up the channel gains until they light up CLIP.
Now turn them down so they can't get that high during the show. Bring up the
faders on the crowd channels, bring up the mackie's mains and set the AD500's
level. OK- you have mic gains set on your lunatec and on the mackie, bring
them down, and get a signal from the board running to the mackie. You must make
certain that you won't be clipping your input stage on the mackie's SBD
channels, they can come in very hot and allowing the channel to clip will
cause distortion. (this is when it's nice to have a long soundcheck!). In
the same way as for the crowd channels, bring up a stong board feed until it
clips, then back it off. This way, you know that you are using the entire
dynamic range of the mackie, and not adding unnecessary noise. If the board
feed is too hot, perhaps there is a "pad" switch on the channels of the
mackie, or you may have to get attenuatiors (should be a switch there!!)
If you have a two channel recorder you are going to get to mix this show like
a broadcast engineer- leave the crowd loud at the start and end of each song,
and pull the crowd mics back during each song. If you have a 4-channel
recorder you can record at full volume and mix later.
For this I am assuming you are recording to a two-channel device. Now, when
the band is about to take the stage and their engineer is just about ready to
go, start the tape by fading up the crowd mics (and the board channels too if
there's any preshow music you want to capture) and leave them up until after
the music starts. When the music starts, make certain the board channels are
up, then as the first song starts, drop the crowd mics down 6-18dB or so (cut
more for a louder crowd) , to minimize ambient chatter. As each song ends,
your task is to bring the crowd mics back up to full-blast so it sounds like
an exciting show on playback. Too many times, tapers are disappointed that
the SBD tape lacks the excitement of the show. This solves that problem by
adding the crowd right back in on top.
Advanced section (to be taken with a grain of salt- I have not tried this
part) If you have access to a two-channel compressor, this can be applied to
the crowd mics, to smooth out the peakey clapping you are likely to encounter.
Set the compressor to about a 4:1 ratio, and a threshold of approx -10 dB and
insert (if you don't understand the idea of insert points, let me simply
mention that each channel on most consoles has a signal loop consisting of a
send and a return, that is, an output and corresponding input. This way,
signal processing units can be used for individual channels if desired.) on
the microphone channels of the mackie (hope it has them!). This will rescale
the level of the crowd signal so that when the crowd gets loud it won't be
such a large difference, and you may be able to mix the crowd in more subtly.
The other problem of board tapes, which this does not address, is the fact
that a keyboard, for instance, makes little noise on stage, and so it often
mixed disproportionately loud in the board tape. Also affected in this way
are typically vocals and effects, like reverb and delay. With a full Matrix
mix there would be a way to work around this by assigning loud instruments to
one of the matrix groups and soft ones to another. The 'soft' group, with
vocals FX and keys, is then lowered in the matrix feed, and the "loud" one,
consisting of guitar, bass, and drums ususally, would be boosted for your
tape. You may have a chance to adjust the board feed, and if you have a
super-cooperative house engineer, he or she might be willing to give this
custom matrix method a try, but I wouldn't push for it unless you know the
engineer really well- it's a little extra work, and it's not how most
engineers usually set up the groups.
By the way, if you want to leave the V2 on stage, its balanced XLR outputs
should drive over a mile of cable, so whatever is the most convenient, I would
want my gain knob near my recorder personally. (if you could get the house
feed at the stage you could do all this back-stage instead)!
I hope this helps, and is not so detailed as to become confusing! Please let
me know if I can be of further assistance,
-tom
Hello all....
I am looking for anyone with good advice/info on doing sbd/matrix
recordings. Soulive is comming to LA and last time I taped them I was
unhappy with both my FOB and On-Stage recordings. The FOB had too much
chatter, and the on-stage was lacking key's.... I am hoping to get
better results from a sbd Mic mixture. This is what I will be using.
Neumann KM140. Lunatec V2. Mackie 1202. Apogee AD500e. D8 or G3w/
digigram card.
Here are my questions....
1. Is it better to to a matrix with on-stage mics or FOB mic's.
2. If the mic's are on-stage can I plug into the house XLR snake
3. If I can use the snake where does the preamp (lunatec V2) go?
Please offer any other advice you can.
Thanks Mick

Um, have you tried DAT2WAV? I'm running a Seagate DDS drive

but there are so few commands that it takes about two minutes
to learn all you need to know about using it.

Actually its a unit that has a 7-pin DIN power
connection and a wall-wort external adapter.
This implies a possibility of running it
with DC, but they pretty clearly do not
warantee that ("no user accessable or other
fuses inside... requires earth ground...").
What you really want is the specifications
of the PS-3 power supply. That may allow
possible modifications.
I mentioned to Dave that Lucid has
a bulletin board with Q&A + Wishlist.
If you have a serious interest in
such a DC-powered product as an
alternative to the AD2k, I suggest
giving them such feedback. Assuming
the PS-3 outputs DC + other features,
perhaps they could be convinced to accept
a authorized 3rd party such as ecocharge
providing DC power options.
http://www.lucidaudio.com/forum/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi
While I do encourage exploration and
more options, I do want to caution against
reading too much into this message.
- If you experiment with this AD you void
your warantee, and perhaps the rectifier
is actually internal, we do not know it
would accept DC.
- Price is never the only comparision, the
AD2k has been specifically designed for
location recording and also underwent sonic
evaluation. It has features, possibly
durability that may justify a price difference.

Delano,
I have been away for a while and just read a week's
worth of your bashing your repair shop and defending
yourself against critisism. I took a moment to look at
your advertised website and thought you would consider
adding this to your home page's quotes of wisdom: "It
is unwise to pay too much, but it's also unwise to pay
too little. When you pay too much you lose a little
money, that is all. When you pay too little, you
sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought
was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a
little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you
deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add
something for the risk you run. And if you do that,
you will have enough to pay for something better" John
Ruskin (1819-1900).
Perhaps you will consider purchasing a more reliable
unit and alleviating yourself from the frustration
often associated with repairs.
Hey, anybody want to buy some dats? I've got a ton of
them I need to unload. This HHB has burned them all to
disc.
Adios

There is a mention in today's NY Times "Circuits"
section of a new device from Pogo Products which
is claimed to be an mp3 player/recorder like the
Nomad Jukebox or Archos mp3 Recorder, but which
will record in uncompressed format. The Pogo
website (www.pogoproducts.com) does not list it
but I called them and they emailed me the specs.
It has a 20 Gig hard drive, weights about 12 oz
(the same as the Archos) and is supposed to get
10 hours of battery life between recharges
(uses 3 AA rechargeables). It has 32k to
320k and variable bitrate mp3 and had WMA
also. But the spec says it records mp3, nothing
about uncompressed recording. The 320k rate is
about double what Archos can do, so it's closer
to what I hope to see, but still no cigar, unless
the sheet just leaves this out. It also has a
mic in AND line in, but no digital in other
than the USB connection. Anyone see this at
Comdex or elsewhere?
