I really don't get this mentality. Blanks CD's are so inexpensive these
days (I just got 100 HP 80 minutes disks for $28 at office max), is it
really more important to save 30 cents than to distribute complete shows?
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that shows get offered up here, and
the offer did include an option to get the entire show on DAT instead of the
partial show on a single CD. But still, maybe it's just me, I always make it
a 2 disk set if the show is longer than ~80 minutes
In cases where a show just barely doesn't fit, I'll try to split the disks
equally, like a 45 minute first disk and 40 minute 2nd disk, rather than 80
minutes and 5 minutes...
Anyway just a random observation...

At the risk of getting yelled at, I'm going to go out on a limb and
re-vist a touchy subject we brought up here briefly and then quickly dropped
following the tragic events of Sept 11th.
Someone had originally mentioned the technical feasibility of running a
portable rig at ground zero during the events of that day, for historical
archival purposes. This offended some, reducing terrible human suffering to
an apparent technical babbling about digital audio. Along with others, I
contributed to that trival discussion, not meaning to make light of the
scenario, but to suggest that historical preservation of such a day in
American history was important.
Well, as it turns out, the mainstream media has brought up this exact
issue. I heard on NPR this evening that a group of their producers is
working on a "Sonic Memorial" to the World Trade Center. They are searching
for anyone with audio relating to the WTC and the events before, during, and
after Sept 11th. They're looking for just about anything WTC related,
including audio recorded at ground zero on that day. Their goal is to
create a memorial to the people affected by the horrible events that took
place there, another way for history to not forget.
I found it interesting that NPR is just now coming up with an idea we
nervously tossed around in this forum two months ago. Just because you're
talking about the techincal details of recording human suffering doesn't
mean you're not compassionate about the situation, and I'm glad they're
doing it. Documenting the war is one way to help prevent it in the future.
Otherwise, history is doomed to repeat itself.
For all the details on NPR's project, check out:

Several people have responded to my post suggesting DAT2WAV for ripping
DATs to the hard drive. While it seems to be great for that purpose, it
does not support Hard Drive > DAT transfer, so it only gives you half of
the functionality of the DDS drive you just bought. With VDat, you don't
get the full functionality of the drive, but you get more than with just
DAT2WAV
Apparently a WAV2DAT program is in the works, but when I was shopping
around for software a few months ago, work on that program seemed to have
slowed or stopped. I just checked the site that sells DAT2WAV again and
there's no mention at all of WAV2DAT, so I guess it's not happening
anytime in the near future.

John,
If you plan on being a minidisc patcher, you really should get an optical
cable. This will allow you to patch digitally, which will yield the best
possible sound quality available w/ your minidisc.
Make sure that you stop by at setbreak and switchout your batteries and
disc. Also, using the 80 minute discs is the best way to get most if not all
of a set.
I see many DAT tapers cop attitudes or suddenly turn into snobs when a
minidisc patcher arrives on the seen. I personally think that this is a
bogus approach. Just because a minidisc recorder does not cost as much as a
DAT deck and compresses the sound, does not mean that these patchers should
be treated w/ any less respect than a DAT patcher. While I am still up on my
soapbox, let me say that I have experienced more under-prepared DAT patchers
than minidisc patchers. Maybe this is because of how they are treated.
I never turn down a minidisc patcher who has an optical cable. But these
patches come at a first come first served basis. I own a Zefiro Inbox which
has an optical out. I know the Apogee also has an optical out. I am not
certain about other pre-amp and/or A/D converters......
Anybody care to jump in here?
So you need to get there early and secure that digi patch. Once it's
secured, it's best to spend minimal time lingering around and only come back
when needed. Show the taper how to strat and stop the minidisc recorder if
he or she volunteers to strat it for you. There usually is not much room for
non-tapers, so keep that in mind...... And bring your flashlight!
Also, one way to secure a digital patch "regardless" is to purchase a CO2.
Then you can be a little more selective. Or to put it another way, you will
have the best chance to get a digi patch. If you get a CO2 you can patch out
w/ a RCA cable via someone's COAX. You will still need the optical cable
coming out of the CO2 to your minidisc (as well). Seems like you can also
give another RCA out or 2 and maybe another optical out ( I forget). So the
CO2 is like a little patchbay. It runs on one 9v battery. If I remember
correctly, you can get an entire show on one 9v battery, but I am not
certain.
Not sure where one could get a CO2, but I am sure Marc Nutter, Ken Hayes,
the Oade's or Jamie /Aaron at Masterpiece could locate it for you. Seems
like they run about $50, which is money well spent.
There was a minidisc patcher at Athens or Asheville recently that had a CO2
and his minidisc in a little Pelican case which worked perfect to carry all
the items that he needed.
DAT tapers that have an optical out: just remember..... that little minidisc
dude could save your ass some day! (speaking from personal experience)

I bought a PCI24 audio card from them, because it was supposed to
convert 48 files to 44.1 "on the fly" AND output 24 bit files. The
card does have this capability, BUT they never released the software
drivers for the Mac to take advantage of it, even though they kept
promising they would. They just came out with several betas and never
a bug free release, and then discontinued support for the card
entirely, so it isn't possible to record at 24 bits as the name of
the card implies and the specs promise.
I found their manual to be terrible and their tech support no help
and nasty as well. I would not buy any products from them again.

Last I checked DAT2WAV is $50 bucks. Not exactly inexpensive (either) for something I have to run through DOS. I went the extra for vdat and personally, I recommend it. I do agree the price is steep, but is lets you stay in Windows (98 SR2 for me). Mine plays with no glitches at all. Then again, I don't play tapes for long on it. I check for where I want it
to start the wave capture and start extracting. [If I made the DAT myself at a show, I note where I stopped recording to use that as the end time for wave capture. Right when you put a tape in a DDS drive, it rewinds the tape.] I didn't buy mine wanting to play, but being that I have let it play for several minutes, I am pretty confident it would play for
quite a while. Don't forget, for glitch-free audio, follow the windows settings tips here.
http://www.celestialaudio.com/win95_info.htm
It has had a hitch with a tape or two that didn't have absolute time, so I went the old fashioned route, in through the digi-card (or copy the tape). Nothing like getting the music in at 2.2x, and finally I am using a DAT machine that was DESIGNED!!! to use 90m tapes.
BTW it plays out of the digital out of my Zoltrix in to an outboard Audio Alchemy D/A converter. No I just need some real monitor speakers.

Hey all,
I am looking for tapers for Zwan, Billy Corgans new band, next month. So
far two dates have been announced.
12.13.01 the intersection; Grand Rapids, MI
12.14.01 Emerson theatre; Indianapolis IN
Tickets for the 12/14 show go on sale tomorrow at 10am EST. We don't know
about the 13th yet.
Also...these shows are OPEN TAPING. We got their first 4 shows in CA this
month all recorded with amazing quality. We have tapers already...but we are
looking for people with bigger type rigs...Schoeps, Neumanns, etc.
Now...they didn't let us use stands at the first 4 shows...so be prepared to
put the mics in your hat or something. We have a large amount of taper
friendly fans going who you will be able to meet up with and stand with...so
it will be nice and quiet around you. If you have any problems at the
door...ask for Gooch...he is their tour manager and was very helpful for the
first 4 shows. NO VIDEO is allowed...sorry all you video guys. But try and
stealth it if you can. Tickets are only 15 bucks...so its very cheap. Please
e-mail jroth793@home.com if you will be able to tape any of these
shows...and please include the rig you will be running. Also for if you tape
either of these shows...I will make sure you get copies of all the other
ones. Thanks everyone,
