From: Gary Watson <gary@blandest.demon.co.uk> Subject: Hugh Cornwell (ex-Stranglers' frontman) Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 19:49:55 GMT Also, if anybody is interested in this guy, I have a master of a show that he did back in July, must have been less than 50 people there, mostly solo material but he also did some old Stranglers stuff (Golden Brown was the only one I recognised). Didn't get the 2nd show, but this one is quite nice. Marantz>D8
From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@mediaone.net> Subject: Re: Schoeps rigs/Proper Lineage Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 15:34:57 -0500 Hey Now! Quite often w/ a public forum, there are different interpretations of what someone actually means by their posts. Different people take different concepts from multiple topic posts. Some folks are now debating the syntax of proper source lineage. This all comes from the first counterpoint rant to Max's original post. The first counterpoint rant took one thing from Max's post and I took another. And since nobody else has picked up on that side.... The point that I took from the original post was that tapes should be traded w/ the complete and proper source lineage labeled on them. This goes back to an original post that I made well over a year ago. Remember way back when you were trading cassettes?? When you got the J-Card, it had the source info (if the person knew it) along w/ the setlist per side. How often do you get that info when trading now? Has the Internet made people lazy? Are traders just too busy to take an extra 30 seconds when labeling something to send out? If you are and etree/shn person, you may answer this question w/ an empathic "NO!". So what's so tough about labeling a freakin tape? There are plenty of new traders out there or patchers that rely on B&P's and convert to disc. Even if you are not new to this, you probably still learn something new all the time. Not everybody knows the mk4/cmc6 thang. Therefore, if the first person that labeled the source info was lazy, sloppy or careless w/ their labeling job (which all equates to being inconsiderate), this misinformation keeps getting passed around. That's a load of crap! How long does it take to label a tape w/ the complete and proper source lineage? I run Josephson mics. How many of you would know what I run if I told you KA-500's? Would you automatically know that I had C-603 bodies? Would you know that the KA-500's were the hyper capsules? This gets down to being considerate to your fellow tapers. Each company has their own little idiosyncrasies. Schoeps are not Neumanns. AKG's are not Schoeps etc. One company may discuss the path lineage in one order, while another company may take a different approach. What becomes the norm for that company, may not be the norm for another company. Companies like Schoeps seem to have more than your average amount of capsules for specific mic bodies and more than your average amount of mic bodies over their years of operation. If a person does not run Schoeps, he or she has not needed to become familiar w/ all this mix and match info. So if one company says it one way and another company says yet a different way, our task is to be consistent and not necessarily assume that the person receiving the tape knows all these fine details. I stopped eating at McDonald's over 13 years ago, but I still remember that a Big Mac is "2 all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese on a sesame-seed bun". But if someone never had a Big Mac before and never heard that commercial, they probably would want to know what garnishes come w/ that sandwich. So they would ask. The person that told them should not cop an attitude because they did not know. If the buyer liked the taste of the sandwich, he or she would make a mental note of the fine details for next time. Don't assume that the person on the other end knows the fine details. Remember what happens when you ass-u-me. Don't make someone spend alot of time trying to hunt down the proper source lineage for something you taped because you were too (expletive) inconsiderate to take 30 second to properly label your (expletive) tape! Here ends my rant. For the record, Here's my source info: Josephson C-603/KA-500(Hyper)>Denecke PS-1A(2x)>Zefiro Inbox>PCM-M1 Cloning Source: Sony R300>Sony R500 Have a Grateful Day! Tapes made from Schoeps rigs need to be > labeled correctly. You always see 64's, or say, cmc6/4>V2>ad100>dap1. This > is wrong, the signal path is mk4>cmc6>V2>ad100>dap1 so really the first > example should be 46's, Well, my Neumann AK40s and KM100 bodies magically become KM140s when I put them together -- and nobody's suggesting I write the signal path as "AK40 > KM100 > . . ." It doesn't really make too much sense when everyone (even Neumann) suggests KM140 is correct. In the same way, it doesn't make sense to call a CMC64 a "mk4 > cmc6", since even Schoeps doesn't call them that. You can argue semantics till the cows come home, but if it's common parlance, there's not much you can do about it. (For another example, ask a bunch of "hackers" how they feel about the news media's use of that word...) - A.P.

From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: DDS DAT Simplification, please Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2001 15:32:00 -0800 I'm picking up what I can tryingn to follow this thread. If someone could reccomend a good drie, where to buy it at a reasonable price, and some windows, not command prompt but GUI or menu driven software that has worked well for them, I'd appreciate it. Also, does doing this require a digital sound card? And, can I use this DAT drive as a player to play DAT's out on a digital line to DAT>DAT dub? I use a Ego Sys U2A for my digital Audio card, and it's a USB external device, it has optical and coaxal out puts for digital. I have my doubts about it functioning the same as an internal card for DAT>WAV conversion or rips. Please write me off line. Keith

From: "Matt Hall" <spreadymonkey@hotmail.com> Subject: Just starting NEED HElp Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2001 21:40:29 -0500 I am thinking about buying a used sony d8 for 360 dollars. It has less than 40 hours on it. It works fine. Is that a good deal? I am also trying to figure out what cables I will need to get so I can connect it to a patch from someone's rig and to my computer. I also need help picking out a sound card. I know these sounds crazy but, I need all of this stuff at a very reasonable price. Thank you! It was recorded w/ DPA 4023 mics from the taping section in back of the sbd at the rear (dfc) of the floor and is on one Maxell 90m DAT. In return, I'd like a sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DAT plus postage. First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it (unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I would give preference to...in which case tell me how many you're willing to make). -Dan-
