If you go to HD with the intent to do post processing (Normallize, EQ, etc)
then it should be 24 bits for sure. If you can't dither back to 16 when you
are ready to burn to CDR, then it doesn't matter much, though.
If you are *only* going to copy to CDR without post processing, then 16 bits
is what you want.

unless you plan on doing major editing (bulk processing, including
resampling/eq/normalize), theres no advantage to take a 16bit source to
24bit. the extra bits help a bit with rounding errors when you are doing a
lot of processing to the data. Even thats debatable, as you need to go thru
a word-length reduction step. WLR would likely have little detrimental
effect with a signal that was using jsut a little over 16 bits

Subject: Advice on microphones
Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 12:16:56 GMT
I record mainly (well almost exclusively) sounds I hear in the world.
For example have 2 hours of street sounds on Bangalore, slightly less
of the sounds of Cuba, and 30mins of Dublin. What is bugging me is
that the recordings seem rather muted against what I hear. So, I was
wondering if I should be using a different/better microphone system.
At present I am using a Sony D8, with a Sony stereo microphone. I
rarely bother about stealth (although the interference from children
in central Bangalore was a little trying!), but I would rather not
have to include phantom power.
Any suggestions?
btw, if anyone wants these recordings they are available. The
Bangalore ones have already formed the source for a musical piece by
BeatSystem in the UK, and I am writing my own Indian pieces as well.

As a newbee in the 'DAT' world, I would like some advice on HOW to clone
DAT's. I'm an expert at cdr's, but I know DIDDLEY on dubbing DATs. I have
gotten some trades from many who use 60 Meter tapes with compression ratios.
WHAT do I need, and HOW can I start to clone ??? All I have is a Sony
D100 - so can I clone with THAT by extracting the audio to my hard drive ??
And where can I purchase those compressed 60 meter DATs ?????

Hi all,
Is there a quick/dirty solution to this? Or is there an easily
available podule
out there to do the conversion? If I remember right, in the olden days
we used
to do something like rig an IR LED up facing a semi-violated TOSlink
connector
or some such. Worked, but don't bump it during a transfer!
All help appreciated. BTW, has anyone gotten the SIIG soundcard with
RCA
s/pdif to work under Win2000?? It reliably produces a blue screen for
me :( ...

Hey Folks,
Having searched the product update digest and the sites of sbm-1 vendors,
are they still for sale somewhere? Can't seem to find them anywhere. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I am looking for suggestions/comments on the Denecke AD-20. Is this a
viable option for say, a pair of Oktava MC012s? As you can tell, I am in
search of a relatively low-cost way to begin taping with the willingness to
upgrade in the future. Thanks again for your help.

Started running my own rig and stepped up to a DAP1, so I am selling my
Sony M1 with Oade Active cable. The M1 is almost two years old and has
taped around 30-40 shows. Although it has not been professionally
serviced, I did treat it like my baby and did all the cleaning on my
own. It is in perfect working and cosmetic condition and would be great
for someone just getting into the hobby and wanted a good deck for a
good price. The Oade cable is less than six months old, perfect
condition. Oade is no longer selling these on their own and they are
tough to find otherwise. Looking to get $425 obo for the combo and will
even throw in a Mtn Smith carrying case for the M1. Thanks for the wob,
peace,
Nick

questions, but i have to do it again (last time i promise). i am in the
process of comparing 3 mics to see which set i want to buy: at 853, akg

need some help determining what exactly is important (not just oktavas suck

I have a Dennon DTR-80P for sale, it does not work but it may be repairable.
The problem is in the tape transport mechanim, tapes play, but with a
lot of digi-noise. Tape path calibration did not solve the problem.
The deck is in physically good shape, it may be useful as a source of spare
parts. It can also function as a remote A/D to spd/if converter.
Includes:
DTR-80P in original box
manuals
power supply
battery pack
two stereo RCA to 4 pin 2.5mm mini plugs.
Asking $25 O.B.O. plus $15 shipping (to US addresses).

so for him.
My friend Cliff who tapes shows solely to be cool and meet girls is selling
his DA302 b/c he just realized the beauty of SHN. He has the deck up for
auction on ebay if you are interested.
Check out the link to the auction at

The deck is in great working condition. I have been the recipient of many
clean clones made on this unit from Cliff. All the tapes have showed low
error rates and have had no problems on any of my decks.

I am looking for anyone who has taped, or is planning on taping any of
the Tori Amos Strange Little Tour shows in Europe. The dates can be
found here:
http://thedent.com/tourlist01.html#strange45
I have DAT masters (DPA 4061>D100), of 25 dates from the North American
leg of the tour. I am especially looking to trade with anyone who has
masters of any of the European dates. I would prefer clones of DAT
masters, but MD masters will do (if there is no DAT source, and you can
digitally copy the MD). Any help in tracking down these shows would be
greatly appreciated.
TIA,

A question regarding the volume reduction of the applause in between songs
in audience recordings.
How's the less obtrusive yet still effective way of reducing that
annoyingly high volume with CoolEdit Pro?
I tried the option Transform > Amplitude > Dinamics Processing but didn't
work very well.

Hi,
An off-topic question.
I want to burn a CD with different songs from different records, for
personal use. I'd like to leave a between-song gap of, say 5 seconds, or
whatever lenght. Can this be done easily with EAC, for instance?
I haven't been able to figure out how come.

My pet peeve about lineage is this
Mics>pre>AD converter>to model of DAT deck.
Model of DAT deck is superfluous if an A to D converter is used.
