That has an impact on the life of the heads and transport, but nothing to do
with the quality of the digital signal being recorded. I have an AD1K so I
am perfectly content to run it into my old D8 until the next generation
device arrives.

Hi Mark,
You can edit the file with a hex editor as mentioned by Wayne. Another
option is to use my software (also mentioned in a previous thread).
ScriptWriter will generate a new "empty" header for you with whatever
sample rate you want. Then you can join the PCM samples from the other
file to it. WAVscript actually does the process, but ScriptWriter will
write the code for you.
We do this all the time to speed up recordings, but you can slow them
down too using this method. It does not resample, so if this is what you
want maybe it would be a convenient way for you.

I'm desperately searching for any Jeff Buckley recordings from
1997 in Memphis, TN. As you may know, Jeff Buckley drowned in the
Wolf River on May 29th, 1997, hours before he was set to record his
2nd full length album. So these recordings may be the only record
of the new forms his songs took when he was practicing them at a
tiny cafe called Barrister's a few days prior to his death. He played 10-12
low-key solo gigs in Memphis at Barrister's up until a few days prior to his
passing. They may be the closest representation of the songs that would be
included on his second album. So far no recordings have surfaced, it's
almost tragic. Any info would be greatly greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Mark,
CE can do the trick. Use the option 'Adjust sample type' in stead of =
'Convert Sample type'. Here you
can change the data in the WAV-header without any processing on the actual =
samples. No need to
go through hex-editing or something. :-)
Good luck,

I'm thinking of purchasing a DAT player, but specifically only to play music

I was wondering what would be the best DAT player/recorder to start up on. I

You can go directly to Sony and backorder one (or two?) online but there
$549.00! Didn't they use to go for around $400 new? I'm not sure if they're
really worth that but you gotta love a decent A/D converter this small that
you can power internally. Are there any other manufacturers that make
something comparable as an SBM-1? I loved my AD2k+ but its 12volt
(car)battery was a bit too much for me to lug around. Do folks use SBM-1s
with DA-P1s?

I spoke with the folks at Sony at the recent AES convention. They have
discontinued the entire consumer DAT product line (TCD-D8, TCD-D100,
SBM-1), leaving only the pro PCM-M1 portable DAT recorder in production.
All accessories (including cables) were considered consumer products and
have also been discontinued.

I've got a good sounding copy of King Crimson from a couple of nights ago
from toronto along with the John Paul Jones opener recorded using an AT-825
> DA-P1 @48KHz. Great location and virtually no crowd noise. The transfer
was done using the same DA-P1 > Audiophile 2496 > soundforge v5.0 > cdwave.
This offer is for cd copies only (I'm a unidecker), either wav/shn discs.
I've also got both acts shn'd at 48KHz in one big file each if anyone wants
dics like that. I'm interested in getting other King Crimson and related
stuff in return along with some more John Paul Jones maybe he fucking
rocked. I will also do B+P's for 3 people if you can get your discs out
asap.

I use an SBM-1 with a PCM-1 and with a Denon DTR-80P. I've heard
that the A/D in the M1 is nearly the same as the SBM-1 and that would
seem to be the case as I cannot tell a difference in quality with
the kind of music I tape. Maybe I'll do an A/B comparison sometime
by recording the same show with both. I can hear a difference with
the Denon, so I guess the built-in A/D of the Denon is inferior.
As for small, self-powered A/D's, I've heard the the Denecke/Zefiro
AD-20 is a great pre/converter, but it is locked at 44.1K (probably
not a big deal to most who transfer their stuff to CD anyway, but I
can tell a difference between 44.1K and 48K and I listen to my stuff
from DAT so 48K is the only way for me) and the volume knobs are next
to inaccessable and separate (the SBM-1 has the R/L knobs separate,
but mounted concentric so both levels can be adjusted at once).
The Denecke looks more rugged and probably a bit more stealthable.

I remember seeing that option in SoundForge 4.5. There was an option to
change the sample rate of a WAV file without actually resampling it. It may
have been under the Resample menu but I'm not sure.
This would be much easier than a HEX edit.

Once its digital, cept for bit errors, its all the same. Of course if the Deck
is doing the AD then it makes big differerence. Hence the reason my source
includes my deck du jour, I don't own a AD converter, yet.

They all write in a compatible format and its digital. Size is just going to
determine how long they last and how fast they become unreliable. If your
saying that my recording will get better by cloning to a DA-P1, I am gunna
scream. 16bit/48k is the same on any deck, or they would not work with each
other.
Comments on the demise of Sony products, well I have heard that the M1 has the
same technology as the SBM-1 in regards to being a 20bit AD with 16 bit dither.
So that means the SBM-1 is redundant in the Sony product line. I am
experimenting with using the M1 in my rig over my P1. So far I am pretty happy
with it.

Date: Fri, 07 Dec 2001 14:25:19 EST
Hey Guys-
I've been lurking around here for long enough. I need some help in selecting a new set of mics. I'm looking at either the Earthworks SR77's and the Neumann KM184's. I will be recording mainly acoustic shows but with the implied possibility of recording much more rockus shows.
For me, I'd like a set of mics that sound great in small venues where I'm a lot closer than I would be at a place like a stadium. I'm talking small clubs and college shows.
But...I'd also like a set of Mic's I can take to a stadium show and not be 30 feet from the stacks but still get a great tape.
I have heard great things about the 77's, but at the same time, I've heard that the KM184's sound great with acoustic concerts.
I'm only looking at those two sets of mics - After all of the tapes I've listened to, I'm honestly torn between these two. If anyone has a comparison tape in a stadium setting with these two mics, please let me know.
A little side note - If anyone is trying to dump their 77's or 184's, I'd like to talk to ya. Also, I'm looking for a used MP2. Take it easy guys and thanks for any support!
