wondering what experiences people have had the last few weeks or so with
gear and checkpoints.
do they make you turn it all on or pull it out of the bag. mabye batteries
raised eyebrows?
i ask because im flying in feb with the gear and was looking to get an idea
of what to expect.
last question>> where did you put your stand? orafices don't count! carry on

First of all, I would like to agree with d rider in saying that the
absolute correct way to list lineage is in it's full form. However
there is the issue of fitting it all on the J card, hence the absolute
need for abbreviations. This entire disscussion was started by Max
Erenberg, who stated very matter of factly,
"You always see 64's, or say, cmc6/4>V2>ad100>dap1. This is wrong, the
signal path is mk4>cmc6>V2>ad100>dap1, so really the first example
should be 46's."
Actually Max is dead wrong! It also suprises me, unless I missed it,
that no one brought up the following.
Schoeps tapers did not just one day decide to start labling there mics
by reversing the signal path, they had a very good reason. First it is
an abbreviation so it is nessesary to shorten the length of the title,
therefore you cut out the mk as in MK4>cmc6, you do this because every
cmc body needs a MK capsul to function, so it is known that it is an
"MK" whatever capsul, when there is a cmc body present. Now, you say
"CMC", and then the body for the following reasons;
there are both mk 4s, and cmc4s, there are also both mk6's, and cmc6's,
therefore the body number must come directly after the body type, cmc6,
this identifies the body. The 4 relates to the capsul, it is implied
that the capsul is the first in the signal path and it can not come
first as Max suggested because, if you were to say that your lineage was
CMC46's>PsP2>DAP1, it would, and does mean that you are running mk6g's
(figure 8 caps)>cmc4u's(12v bodies)>ect.
THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO LABLE SCHOEPS
CMC64's>means #6 bodies(the most common in taping) and mk4 cardiod caps
CMC641's> #6 body>mk 41 hypercard caps
CMC64v's> # 6 body>mk4v vertical cards
CMC641v's>#6 bodies>mk41v vertical hypercards
SO ON AND SO FORTH YOU GUYS GETTING THE HANG OF THIS
JUST FOR THE RECORD CMC46> MEANS #4BODIES, AND MK6 FIGURE 8 CAPS.

I have an Egosys Waveterminal 2496 and a Soundblaster Live installed in my
computer. When I am transferring from DAT to my hard drive via the WT
digital in I am unable to monitor the sound. I do have the SB Live and WT
connected with an internal "cable" (Digital out to aux in). I think I have
all the correct software/system settings.
Anyone have an idea why I can't monitor?
TIA

Hey Now All!
I am going to make an attempt to tape his sister
tonight in a friends living room, small house party.
Rig will be Nac3000s > P-1. Hope it comes out ok.
BUT I have a larger problem ... My lady is pissed at
me as I have to work Christmas and New Years. What
would get me out of the dog house would be some HQ (
board, FM or Sweet spot good mics ) Steve Earle!!
Can Anybody out there help me ? I will send my list
for a trade or if you can do a B+P, whatever works for
you .
Peace, Michael

Carl;
Several years ago, I found this small company in Walnut, California called PI
Manufacturing. They are CHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEPP!!! They sels lots of
wires/adaptors/computer cables, etc. One of their items is a small box (half
the size of a cigarette box) that comes with a power supply. It takes in
optical and spits out coaxial. They sell another box that does the opposite.
They come with power supplies. I think I paid about 12 bucks. WOW!! The
site kinda sucks; the catalog is the way to go.

I just completed my own exhaustive (exhasuting!) research into sound cards.
Learned a little about how the whole computer components game is played
along the way. I'm sure there are others that could do a better job at
explaining but here goes: Chip manufacturers design and build chips and sell
to companies that design and market products that use the chips. The DiO
2448 is based on the C-Media 8738 chip. That chip contains all the digital
in/out and analog<>digital conversion (which you won't be using). The
DiO2448 is the most expensive way to get that chip. The legendary Zoltrix
Nightingale is the least expensive (yes, it's the same chip - C-Media will
tell you if M-Audio won't). That is why the problems people have experienced
with the 2448 are the same (some folks complain of dropouts). From what I've
read, these dropouts are more likely from high traffic on the bus (likely
video card). Also noteworthy is the fact that you can mix and match drivers
(i.e. the 2448 drivers work on the Zoltrix)
Now I'm an md taper (sorry!) so the main requirement for my purposes was
optical input to match the optical output of my md deck. With coax spdif you
have it way easier. There are many more coax cards out there that use the
C-Media chip. So if you want to try it out, here's a few (and they're
cheap!) You might want to confirm they have coax before ordering as I was
focussed on optical. You can do a web search on "8738" and see what you get.
The C-Media site also has a spot where you can find out who uses the chip
http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_download_1.html
Also interesting to note is that some motherboard manufacturers are putting
this chip onboard (Soyo, Asus, IWill, MSI). If you're buying a new pc or
upgrading, you can get the coax/optical spdif built right and and forget
about this soundcard nonsense.
Zoltrix Nightingale US $30 + $5 shipping (even comes with optical connectors
and optical cable) http://stores.yahoo.com/etcompany/zolnig.html
C-Media 8738 (they make their own card and I think it has coax spdif) $20
CDN at various computer stores
AudioExcel AV511 (sold as 'MD Mate' when bundled with optical add on)$36 US
+ shipping http://www.directron.com/mdmate.html
AudioExcel AV512 $25 CDN
http://www.ncix.com/Canada/productdetail.cfm?sku=6049
I think these use the chip as well - Guillemot maxi sound muse, Guillemot
game surround muse
Just remember, everything by Soundblaster resamples and I think same goes
for anything where you see AC97 audio in the specs (i.e current Hercules
soundcards). Avoid these.
And by the way, I ended up with a used Zoltrix from someone that had trouble
with it and it works great for me - $20 CDN!
Good luck!

Is this a popular digital soundcard to use?
I'm looking for an inexpensive, but reasonably
high quality way to do DAT > CD-R transfers.
I need S/PDIF coaxial input and output. Any
personal advice or recommendations would be
appreciated.

Im looking to see if there might be any tapers in the
UK that might be willing to tape a cool guy. His name
is Tyla (formerly of The Dog's D'Amour), he's playing
a bunch of acoustic dates this month in the UK. His
music is very much in the vein of Keith Richards. It
will be a stealth show, since he wont allow taping on
this tour since hes recording them. If you could do
one or more please contact me.

I'm always looking for tapes of this S. Florida act. They just finished a
month long national tour and are taper friendly (no SBD). They toured with
bands like Rival Schools, Midtown etc. Indie rock. I have about 10 shows to
trade and some side projects as well.
Thanks,
Dave
