I would assume you are monitoring via WT2496 analog outputs. -- do you have
"digital in" set on the WT2496 control panel in the "analog out mixer" box?
(I use EWDM 1.31 control panel; beta 3.0 doesn't seem to work with 2 WT2496
cards, which I have.)

NYC-based group Stickman Jones is performing a small Christmas concert
in NYC on Saturday, December 15. If you would like to hear traditional
Christmas music played on acoustic (mostly) instruments in a small setting,
I will pay your way to this very limited attendance concert.
Recording is ok with the band, but mic stands and bags of gear will
probably get you to the back of the room. Plan on "authorized stealthing."
Reservations are required, so contact me for more details if you are
interested.
Merry Christmas,
Ragan

i know this has been covered but things are a bit tighter now. just
wondering what experiences people have had the last few weeks or so with
gear and checkpoints. do they make you turn it all on or pull it out of
the bag. mabye batteries raised eyebrows?
i ask because im flying in feb with the gear and was looking to get an
idea of what to expect.
last question>> where did you put your stand? orafices don't count!
carry on mabye?
I flew down to Texas from Oakland CA in late October with a ton of gear
- I put everything I could into my checked bag (i.e. extra cables,
chargers, power strips etc.) but was obviously unwilling to check my
mics, decks, pre-amp etc. I carried on a pelican case with my decks,
pre-amp, SBM-1, Neumanns etc. in it and also carried on a backpack that
had my two eco-charges, a video camera, a digital camera, and a bag full
of cables and other stuff that would allow me to still tape if they were
to lose my checked bag. As for my mic stand, I figured they wouldn't be
cool with me carrying it on, so I bought a sturdy poster tube that was
big enough to fit the stand inside and I wrapped the stand in a towel,
shoved it inside, taped the tube up, put an address label with all my
info on it and I checked it.
Given the amount of gear I was carrying on, I fully expected the royal
strip search treatment. I was initially hassled at the check-in counter
in Oakland ( I got there two+ hours before departure to be safe) about
the two carry-on bags, as they were saying I could only have one. I
told them I was allowed to have a carry-on bag and a brief case and that
the Pelican Case was my brief case...they grumbled a bit and then told
me to take my chances at the gate, noting that if they said no up there
then I'd have to bring it back and check it. This never became an
issue.
In Oakland at the security check, they amazingly sent my stuff right on
through the x-ray machine and never asked to look at anything. Not the
greatest sign of the state of airport security when I can carry six
electronic gagits, two eco-charge batteries, and a ton of cables without
even a question from security. None-the-less, I breezed right on
through and other then having to show my ID about 4-5 times before
getting on the plane, there were no hassles.
On the return trip in San Antonio, the security did want to look at my
stuff and sent me to a side table. There, a security guy swabbed
everything and placed the swabs in a bomb detection machine. He pulled
most everything out and asked a few questions but mostly just wanted to
swab stuff and then sent me on my way.
The end result for me was this - be prepared for a thorough
looking-through of your stuff, as well as long lines everywhere and make
sure to get there plenty early. Other then that, no problems. I
brought copies of all the owners manuals for each piece of equipment to
show what it is, in case the pre-amp or other unrecognizable gear
wierded them out but it was a non issue for me. I did hear of other
folks getting hassled with cables, with security saying you could tie
someone up with them...basically, there's no specific set of rules - if
a security person doesn't like the look of something, they could ask you
to check it which will create a big time hassle. Be prepared and you
won't likely have a lot of issues.

I'd like to input that some of us are not keyed into all of the equip. out =
there. It would be nice if I didn't have to track down the fact that a =
certain mic can only operate with a certain capsule. For example, the =
discontinued Nakamichi CM300 was used with 4 different capusles. You can =
still get new (compatible) capsules from the OEM (Primo Mic in TX), and =
they are used now as replacements. Shows recorded after the original =
capsules were discontinued with have to note when they are using the new =
stuff. When I trade a show to somebody, I'm not going to assume they know =
everything about Nakamichi mics. I'm going to atleast give them the full =
numbers for what they need to know. It's not that big a deal.
Lots of shows don't get traded with the source info. This drives me =
crazy. I think the easier it is to decipher the source info, the more =
likely people are to pass it along. So my vote is to always include as =
much info as possible. If it doesn't fit on your Jcard, pass a note along =
so we humble know-nothings can keep source info that makes sense to us.

Well it's been a very long time since doing anything DAT related....so it's
time to clean house...everything must go...
1) Sony D-8 includes AC adaptor, leather case, and hard shell carrying
case..big enuff for tour :) About 250 hours on the heads..clean..no problems.
Only ate one 60m tape from a Radio Shack in NY (Went to see Phish...forgot
my blanks,paid 20 bucks a piece...ow)
2) 2 digi cables RK-DA10,RK-DA10 modified. One's the orange 7-pin from sony,
the other is the $120 cable from Sonic Sense for in/out)
3) 1 Eco-charge Sigma Plus battery pack for running the Dat plus another D-8
or SBM-1
4) My pride and joy..pair of Microtech Geffel sms2000's w/m200 cardiod caps.
I'll also throw in an assortment of mic cables of various lengths.
5) AT 8410 shock mounts (2)
6)AKG KM235 universal t-bars (I have 2 of them in case someone wants to piggy
back yer rig)
7)Shure A27m vertical t-bar
8)Tascam DA-20mkII bought reconditioned demo from Tascam..used less than 30
hours in studio....It was about this time I switched to CDR.
9)This one is a bit off DAT...Mackie 1402 VLZ PRO..for though of you who know
this mixer...it has the BEST sounding pre-amps..PERIOD! I only used it to
record live in my local club...I even was able to burn straight to CD..I have
the run of the club..I even get a table &power)
10)one black 15ft mic stand....been with me since the Clifford Ball...and out
to the Gorge...sorry...I miss the boys...
OK...so that's the lot...I'm up for any reasonable offers. I'll sell them
piece by piece or in groups..whatever. I'm married...I'm old and lame..and
I don't plan on touring for quite some time...but man what a ride it's been.

Subject: Edirol UA-3 and USB Digital I/O
Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 00:40:31 EST
I had read some items on this list regarding USB digital audio interfaces, in
order to research the matter for myself. There was some discrepancy between
some posts, but I believe that I can clarify them (thanks to Edirol) for the
benefit of everyone who reads this list.
Scott.C.Brown uses USB e-magic EMI 2|6 with i-book with no problem....
Kieth Bode talked about USB being "fine" but wanted to know about how to
prove it is bit for bit...
"Jesse" got a letter from Isaac Balloun, a Technical Support Representative
at Edirol Corporation North America who confirmed that USB (1) is bad for
digi-audio, that USB-2 would be fine (but Roland does not make such
interface) and that Roland products are fine.
Jesse says that's hogwash, since the speed capabilty of USB is sufficient.
As you can see, they're "both" right... It is really a driver issue.
Scott uses an i-Book, which you can well imagine uses different drivers than
a PC.
Well, I got several e-mails from Edirol regarding the matter when I
investigated whether this was perhaps the unit for me (the UA-3).....which I
have deemed for now that it is NOT.
According to Edirol, it is MICROSOFT'S driver that is actually the problem.
For all you DAT-Heads, here is the text of what Edirol wrote to me regarding
this matter. Hopefully this will put to rest any of the questions. If anyone
would like to respond to me, please do so directly to my e-mail address,
since I do not have time to read each issue.
There is more than one reply since I asked a few different questions. All
their replies are here.
From: Catherine Carey, Edirol Corporation
One of the reasons that I love this job (even after six years), is that I
learn something new every day. Here's the skinny on the digital transfer
capabilities of the UA-3. You were quite correct that it is not a bit for
bit transfer, and if the purpose of your transfer is preservation of the
audio quality from your DAT, the loss of data is so insignificant that human
ears won't decipher any difference. If however, you are transferring data
that will eventually need to be encoded back to the original file, the UA-3
would not be suitable for your needs.
I briefly mentioned the UA-5 to you when we spoke on the phone this
afternoon. Although we can't confirm this now, there is a very good chance
that because this is using a specific driver (written by Roland), there
would be no bit loss in the digital transfer. The UA-3 and UA-30 both use
the Microsoft USB audio driver. It is our estimation that it is the driver
itself that interferes with the data transfer, thus having a better driver
would be quite promising.
Another option to explore would be using the Propagamma USB ASIO driver with
the UA-3. Again, because this is not a generic driver, it would stand a
better chance of capturing the data accurately than the Microsoft driver.
This Propagamma driver is $50.00 however, and with the benefit of the
additional ports on the UA-5, may I suggest you take a hard look at the
Edirol UA-5.
I look forward to hearing from you again with further questions when you
have them.
Best regards,
Catherine Carey
Edirol Corporation North America

From: Catherine Carey
Sorry about the delayed response - we've been extremely busy. Because the
UA-3, UA-30, UA-1A or UA-1D are all using the Microsoft USB audio driver -
none of them will be capable of capturing bit for bit information. I
seriously doubt that Microsoft cares about any bit loss as the original
driver was to facilitate digital speakers hooked up through USB.
Regarding the bit data capture of the UA-5, it is possible that we'll have
further specifications that would include any bit loss data, but I most
certainly wouldn't hold your breath. At this point in time, I would think
that there will be no data loss.
>>>>>
From: Catherine Carey
To my knowledge, we are not planning a firewire device, particularly with
USB 2 (somewhat) around the corner.

I have the following tapes laying around and would like to get a trade or b&p for them.
Tool 9/18/01 Toronoto, ON AT853>SPSB2>MS702>JB920>DTC-670
Family Values (Linkin Park, Staind, STP) 10/28/01 Buffalo, NY AT853>SPSB2>D7
They were returned on a trade, the person I traded with noted spots of d/n at 15:06 on the Tool tape and 5:37 on the FV tape. I have not been able to hear this on my D7, 670 or played through vDAT and my CTD8000. Just thought I'd make that clear though.
Both are on 90m tapes and I would like the same in return for b&p or give me your list and we'll see about a trade. Preference will be given to those who promise to pass them on.
