Subject: Jimmy Cliff taping policy
Reply-To: john@whalen.net
Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 12:17:56 -0500
This is old info but back in 1988 I was setting up to tape a free show
on the Boston Common and was approached by Cliff's manager. He
explained that they were anti taping and that Jimmy had lost alot of
money due to bootlegging. I tried to reason with the guy, explaining I
never sell, this will help spread the good word re: Cliff's misic.
ect....but it fell on deaf ears. I told him he had no legal right to
prevent me from taping a free concert but out of respect for the artist
( and not wanting to argue ) I relented. Unless you hear
otherwise...stealth him !
To save time w/ anyone new to taping. I have found it pretty safe to say
that nearly every single reggae band of even minimal status is >>
anti-taping <<
So if you are heading out to record a reggae band, you can take your full
rig, but be prepared to leave it in the car. If you think that's safe.
Otherwise, leave the full rig at home and be prepared to go in full stealth
mode.
Of course, this does not hold true if you are the sound man (good friend) of
the band. So there's no need to pop off. And sometimes when reggae bands
open for taping friendly bands, open taping is no problem. For example,
Israel Vibrations (very good BTW) opened for SCI in Steamboat Springs, CO on
7/3/01. Open taping was no problem. And many people know that Ziggy Marley
opened for TOO in 2000 and open taping was allowed. But if Lee Scratch Perry
is playing a club in your town, don't even think about open taping.
Then again, somehow somewhere on a rare occasion a tape will get leaked
out.....
Like this on that I will offer up as a B&P bandwidth tax
(since I have never been told not to trade it):
Ziggy Marley, Raleigh, NC 3/21/96 ~DSBD~
It takes one sealed 60m DAT (only) and goes to the first person to respond.

Hey all, I just dug my old DATport up, downloaded the latest drivers from
Opcode, and tried to hook it up to my Win2KSR2 box at work. Windows
recognized it as a 'USB Playback and Recording System', but when it tried to
install the drivers it gave an error at the end that said 'The installation
failed because a function driver was not specified for this device
instance.'
Anyone have any suggestions ?

It cannot be done directly, say with a resistor and a cap. One needs to
satisfy impedance matching, balanced interfacing and the mics powering
considerations. There are many, many components in a machined cylinder
designed to plug into an XLR jack.
DPA, Sennheiser, Shure, Samson and others offer these in-line interfaces and
we can supply them. They run from about US$50-150 per channel.
Thanks!

I could use some help with trying to get rid of a pop that keeps getting
inserted onto CDR's that i am trying to burn. I am trying to go from Dat
> Audiophile 24/96 > Sound Forge > CDwave > EAC, and I keep getting a
pop at the end. I have set Sound Forge to No Regions, No Playlist so
that shouldn't be a factor. My understanding is that the Wave file has
to be at a multiple of 588 samples and I can't figure out how to get to
that multiple in Sound Forge via absolute frame or time & frames. If
anybody is using this, or something close to this setup, and can help,
it would be greatly appriciated. Peace, ( should have gone the
standalone route ) Marc

Subject: subject: Sony D8 high pitched noise when light is on
Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 12:05:36 -0800
You have a short in either your mic input or line input (whichever you are
using when the noise occurs). The noise doesn't happen when receiving a
digital input signal, right?
Or possible you have a short in the mic (or line in) cable itself. I had a
pair of Sonics develop a short in the mic cable, and had the same thing
happen. Fixed the cable, noise went away. But contrary to your statement
that the noise isn't audible externally, it is. Turn on the light and put
your ear right up to the deck, you will hear it.
Bill
RE:=======================================================================
Hey gang,
A long time ago there was a series of posts here about problems with the
D8's making a high pitched sqealing noise when the LCD backlight was turned
on. You can't hear the noise externally, but it is recorded onto the tape.
If you turn the light off, the noise ceases. Does anyone know what causes
this, or if there are any repair shops around familiar with fixing this
problem?
Thanks all,
Ryan

narrow clubs < 30 ft away, and nos for outdoor. is that going to work?
also, does anyone have any experience with the hyper and omni caps? i was
looking at getting at least the hypers if they are ok (to use outside). let

The CMI8738 is one of the chips that has digital in and out and does not =
re-sample. Thus it's easy to build a motherboard with SP/DIF in and out. =
By all accounts the analogue outputs and inputs are fairly crappy but =
this shouldn't be important.
If the other features of the motherboard are OK I'd say go for it. You =
