Hey All,
I would sure like to make a dat trade for either an fob or tapers section copy of this show. If any of you taping w/ Robert get this I would especially like to hear what you got since I was close by, helping to ward off stray balloons (yea, one got through). Take care and happy holidays.

What exactly do I need to use with MBHO 603s to feed
an AD2K or AD1000?
"Active cables?" Preamp body?
Are "active cables" a substitute for the preamp?
Is it better to have the preamp at the head-end?
Would it be bad if I ran, say, 20-30 feet of "passive"
cable down to a pre-amp box, like a Lunatec V-2,
then off to the A/D?
Lastly, how much do I gain by having an outboard D/A
and a D-8 as compared with direct analog into a Tascam
DA-P1 ? (Machine reliabilty, age, and head-size aside)
I just mean audio quality of these two the D/A s.
Thanks.
-Bob

Hey Now!
I have seen the setlist for last year's Warren Haynes Christmas Jam.
I could not make it last year, but I will be there this year.
I was expecting an early start time to accommodate all the musicians,
but the ticket says 7:00 PM
Could someone who attended (taped) last year send me a note w/ the set
times?
I am still fulfilling BWT's from last week and this week.
So.. you'll just have to go on faith.
Thanx!
D-Rider
Hey D-Rider,
last year the tickets said 7 and it means 7, the show starts exactly on
time, also last year there were no real set breaks, usually while one bands
equipment was being moved of the stage, a solo or duo would come out and
play a few songs, the show last year lasted till about 1, so be prepared, it
is one of the best nites of music you'll see,

Hey Now All!
Sean! Thank you for your link to some fine live
shows of several of the finest artits around. I am
picking up a couple of the discs as I recommend other
people do .
I am still looking for more live shows. Anybody have
a clean copy Ov Los Lobos in '91 at the Strawberry
Music fest? Great tour and it was mostly traditional
music of Mexico and other 'latin' countries.
Some of you Texas tapers have to have a little
something in your collections. I have spent time in
Austin on several occasions and that wonderful City (
a little bit of Heaven in the middle of Hell ) has
several places to go and see music. It's very much
like Memphis , New Orleans and other such cities where
you can just stroll down a street and be pulled into a
club by music flaoting out of it and see some players
you have never heard of putting out some very kick ass
music.
So if anybody has any of this type of music on tape
I would love to trade.
Thank You , Michael

Subject: HUGE DAT B&P - Entire Collection Up For Grabs!
Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2001 17:08:50 -0500
Apologies for the cross-post...
List is here: http://home.attbi.com/~davepeck79/DATLIST.TXT
Info follows:
Ok folks, it's time for me to say goodbye to the DAT world.
With that, I'm offering up my entire collection for b&p.
There are 262 tapes all together, which I've broken down
into batches of 12 (except for the last batch, which is
10).
Because there is no way for me to listen to every single
tape and make sure everything is ok with it, I am only
asking for 10 blanks in return for each batch of 12
tapes. I will be selling the blanks after this process
is complete, as it wouldn't be exactly legal for me to
sell them with music on them.
The tapes are a variety of different brands, but MOSTLY
Sony DGP and Maxell HS4 computer grade tapes. There are,
however, a few professional audio grade tapes in here
(Apogee, Panasonic).
Please note: I will ONLY accept UNOPENED Sony DGP and
Maxell HS4 tapes in this trade. The blanks I ask for in
return for each batch is noted next to each batch number.
***I WILL NOT BREAK UP THE BATCHES; PLEASE DON'T ASK***
I spent a LOT of time putting these tapes and this list
together today, so the tapes are to stay in their batches.
The first 15+ batches are Phish, with a wide variety of
bands covering the rest. If you're interested in any
batches, please email me at davepeck79@attbi.com.
I will be asking for $4.50 to ship each batch - I will
pack them and ship them via USPS Priority Mail.
**If there is anyone out there who wants the ENTIRE collection,
**I will let it go in exchange for 200 blanks (125 x 90m,
**75 x 60m)!
go easy...

Subject: extra P&F 10/14/00 on DATs for B+P
Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2001 17:02:37 -0500
This is for the Phil Lesh & Friends at the Beacon Theatre,
NYC on 10/14/00. It was recorded w/ DPA 4023 mics
from the taping section in back of the orchestra and is on
two Sony 90m DATs (one per set).
In return, I'd like two sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DATs
plus postage.
First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets
it (unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which
I would give preference to...in which case tell me how
many you're willing to make).

Subject: DAT recording, digital transfer - 2 questions
Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2001 17:42:20 -0800
Hello,
I am very much a DAT "newbie", having just got my first and only DAT
recorder - a Sony PCM-M1 - the other day. A few weeks ago, I bought a used
Neumann TLM-103 mic to use with the DAT recorder. I am a composer and
interested in experimenting with electronic music, so I planned to use the
DAT & mic to take all sorts of samples - of various sounds, not necesssarily
music; tapping, clicking, ringing, chirping, a variety of different sounds -
and then transfer (digitally) to my computer, where I could process, edit,
manipulate the sounds, using Pro Tools FREE and, if necessary, other
software.
Two things have come up - the first is a very basic question, but I have
very little familiarity with the recording process, so please excuse my
ignorance. I have tried recording some relatively soft sounds (e.g.
knocking, tapping on wood), with very little success - I find that with the
recording level all the way up (and the switch set to "manual" in the back),
and with "mic att" at 0 dB (as opposed to 20 dB, which I think is designed
for loud sounds), and with the microphone less than an inch from (and
facing) the sound source, when I play back what I have recorded, the sounds
I have recorded are ver soft, relative to the white noise that results from
turning the volume up (which I have to do in order to hear it). Indeed, the
"-dB" levels that display on the unit while recording rarely get past about
30; the instruction manual recommends adjusting the recording level so that
it averages about 12. I even tried recording some piano music on my 6-ft
Kawai grand piano, with the microphone placed inches from the sound board,
and even then, if I play as loud as I can, I can hardly get it past 12, and
when I play it back, there is far too much white noise relative to the
recorded sounds.
Right now, my setup consists of this: the Neumann TLM-103 microphone (only
one), connected to a portable (9-volt battery-powered) phantom power box
with 2 input and 2 output XLR jacks (I'm only using one input & its
corresponding output), connected (via the Hosa XVM-249 cable - XLR [female]
to right angle stereo 3.5mm plug) my Sony PCM-M1's mic/line-in jack (set to
mic), powered by the included rechargeable batteries(charged), though I also
tried it with the AC adaptor (same result).
I don't think the problem is with the microphone - the people at the store
where I bought it (American Music) tried it out and said it worked fine.
When I was shopping online for a DAT recorder, I saw mention here and there
of preamps, without really knowing what they were or paying much attention
to it; the salesman at American Music said I only needed a phantom power box
to power the microphone. However, twice I have used my school's recording
equipment (pair of microphones, mixer, and most recently a CD recorder) to
record cello & piano music, and there was no problem - little if any white
noise, great (and amply loud) sound, etc. What I'm wondering is this: do I
need (or would it help to have) a preamp, or something besides the phantom
power box, in between the microphone and the DAT recorder, to amplify the
signal from the microphone? If so, what would this be (a preamp? a tiny
mixer?) and what could I get that's cheap (hopefully, without sacrificing
sound quality) and portable (i.e. that could be used away from an electrical
outlet)?
Here's my other question: After I make a recording, I would like to transfer
it from the DAT recorder to my computer. I have a SoundBlaster Live Platinum
Soundcard (including the LiveDrive in front), which has the standard
assortment of 3.5 mm jacks (line in/out, etc.), two larger jacks (one for
headphones, one for microphone), and S/PDIF in & out jacks. I understand
that my S/PDIF jacks, being round, are coaxial, not optical (correct me if
I'm wrong). The salesman at Oade Brothers (from whom I bought the DAT
recorder) said that I could do an analog transfer with a $25 cable, but that
wouldn't come out sounding very well (lots of added background noise)
because of the high RF environment in my computer, or I could do a digital
transfer from the Sony's 7-pin jack to the coaxial S/PDIF jack in my
computer, using a $175 cable that Oade Brothers makes specially and isn't
available anywhere else.
Firstly, is there any way I could do a digital transfer from my Sony PCM-M1
to my computer, given the equipment I have, for less than $175? If not, are
there soundcards (or other interfaces) available for around $200, more or
less, that have *optical* S/PDIF jacks (which I understand will connect to
the PCM-M1 with a $25 cable), so that it might cost a little more now, but
be better in the long run?
In case any of you are familiar with DAT recording and interfaces in general
but not with the PCM-M1 specifically, it has these four jacks:
remote/headphones (3.5mm), line out (3.5mm), mic/line in (3.5mm), and
remote/digital I/O (7-pin).
Sorry to make this such a long message. Thanks a lot for any replies!
Marc Macauley
