In short, even a "mediocre" card , such as a
Soundblaster Live!, will make a virtually noise-free
recording.
Case in point:
I have an Analog cassette master, soundboard to
Nak 505 which was post-processed with a Rosetta
and similar high end equipment to a CD.
Let's just say the performance was stellar, but " a
river runs through it." It has audible hiss.
As a comparison, I dubbed the VHS Hi-Fi track of
Dylan's Unplugged (for personal use, because my CD of
same doesn't include all of the cuts, most likely for
marketing reasons, my VHS has all of the tunes, I
bought 'em and I want to listen to them in the car.)
Anyhow, the dub was VHS Hi-Fi analog out >> analog in
on SB Live! >> .wav(tracked with CDWave) >> CDRWin
Voila! No audible hiss. Very acceptable dynamic range.
Better than a lot of commercial CDs sold today.
Period.
The SB Live! is not the best analog card and it
supposedly resamples digital input, though Creative
Labs will not confirm nor deny this. I don't have the
chip info and can't prove it one way or another.
The bottom line. You will get perfectly fine transfers
first gen analog with even a low-end audio card, such
as an M-Audio, Ego Sys, or Echo. (like $150-$250)
If you have "golden ears" the A/Ds on these may have
you running to Apogee or dBX for a pro outboard.
Most will opt to do a digital transfer.
A digital transfer usually will not pick up any
noises,
if cables are well made and well shielded.
If you are getting digi-noises or bad sound than most
likely something isn't configured correctly.

If anyone has connections to get a pass to the Winter NAMM show in
California in January let me know. I will make it worth your while.
Main reason I want to go is Eric Johnson is playing one of the private shows
and it may be possible to get tickets for the show. EJ is doing a short tour
around the NAMM show and I am going to the socal shows to tape. Otherwise,
have alot to trade.
Thanks,
Charlie

I am the original owner, having purchased it new from Klay five years ago.
I am selling it because I don't use it anymore and it has known very little
use over the past year. I am building a laptop recording system and retain
an M1 for stealth and other portable DAT needs.
My PortaDAT has been meticulously cared for and is recently back from
service at NXT Generation (authorized HHb service center) as my 5-year
warranty was running out (it only received a professional cleaning [at my
expense] and was certified with a clean bill of health. It was used
exclusively for taping at shows as I have ample home decks for cloning and
transfers to hard disk. On the few occasions that cleaning was necessary it
was performed with professional tape cleaning fluid and only foam swabs (no
chamois or cotton swabs and no dry cleaning tapes).
The deck is also in excellent cosmetic condition and comes with the original
box and manual as well as the following accessories:
HHb RB-100 A/C power adapter & dual-well charger
(2) HHb MHB-220 DC6v 2400mAh barely used
Nickel-Metal Hydride Rechargeable Batteries
Protective carrying case with top pocket and shoulder strap (some wear)
Installed plate for protecting the RCA plugs (S/PDIF in&outs + analog outs)
Pre-wired coil (~3') 12v power cable with right angle 4-pin XLR
Extra 4-pin XLR that you could use for your own 2nd battery power cable
If you are local I can throw in at least one older 12v Powersonic cell that
is years old but will still power it for hours & hours. It is too heavy
to be worth shipping and note you still need a 12v lead acid charger
This is the finest and most reliable DAT deck that you will see at shows.
It has wonderful features including switchable AES/EBU(XLR) and
S/PDIF(RCA=coax) input & outputs, built in 48v phantom power for mics with
optional 30db limiter, high quality ADC and DAC, 4 heads for confidence
monitoring during recording or cloning, lockable analog input levels, and a
selectable headphone jack or built-in speaker for modest monitoring on
playback or during recording. For greater details you can look here:

I purchased this deck to replace a Tascam DA-P1 and always had a much higher
degree of confidence with this deck. It has always been highly reliable and
I would recommend it over a new Tascam DA-P1 (or a used one if you the extra
$500 to spend). The deck sells new (list was something like $3200 and I
think I paid $2700) for about twice the price of a DA-P1, however I am
offering it for only about 60% more than where a used Tascam trades. I
would like to get $1600 for the deck and accessories. If I need to ship the
unit to you, I will use a 1 or 2 day carrier (e.g. FedEx) upon receipt of
payment and split the shipping cost with you. Please email with any
questions or reasonable offers. If I don't sell it here within about a
week, I will probably list it on ebay and annouce it here one more time. I
can take and email digital photos upon request. Buy yourself a holiday
gift.
peace, further...

thanks for the fine tip!
I wonder if you have any knowledge if the plex would work in an Mac
which has an IDE internal CD drive (I have a beige g3 desktop)? for
$100 I could presumable replace my internal drive with a 16x burner!?
I'd love to know, but I don't expect you'd know. . . so do any of the
DAT-HEADS know the answer to this?? thanks y'all, and I can still
upload that Tenacious D SHN'd DSBD to anyone's server who sends me
the ip/username/pw/(path) (that's the 10-7-2001 st louis show)

For the person looking for a good internal CD-RW, check here for a Plextor
16X at $129.95, minus a $30 rebate, with free shipping. I don't have any
connection to buy.com; just a good product at a good price. Note that
this is a retail box product; OEM version does NOT qualify for rebate.

This may seem like an unusual request but I have a collection of around 200
tapes that I am looking to get rid of. I am looking to trade them for
wrestling tapes. If anyone is interested send me your list of videos and I
will send you my DAT list.
