The band is a really hot blues band & I am looking for someone to tape the show. It would have to be a stealth recording, as some of the band members are cool with recording & some are NOT! I can tell you that they are not looking for tapers, so it really will not be a problem. They are playing at the "NORTH STAR" in Phila. on 1-5-02. If anyone can do this, I have plenty of shows available to make it worth your while. Please e-mail me at my home address : livetaper@hotmail.com PEACE & BLESSINGS stuart

From: krichard@som.umass.edu Subject: re: SBM-1 A/D quality vs others [long] Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 13:00:34 -0500 (EST) [NB: Sonic hard-line Objectivists can scroll past this post. Inconclusive, unsubstantiated drivel is woven throughout.] Mike Perkins <mperkins@telus.net> said: >my Sony D8 literature sings the praises of this add-on front end for the D8, perhaps somebody could tell us what PERCEIVED and ACTUAL audio quality improvement results from this equipment configuration - and is it worth the significant [$$$] To my ears, the SBM-1 is a dramatic improvement over the D7/D8 A/D. The SBM-1 gives a richer sound which is, at the same time, more detailed, transparent and clear. Although the D100/M1 built-in A/D is better than the D7/8, there is *still* an increase in audible transparency and warmth with the SBM-1. The initial impression of the D7/8 is that they have quite a bit of transparency, but upon extended listening there is a mid-treble harshness and rough quality that is not so appealing. The D100/M1, on their own, thankfully have a much smoother quality that is easy on the ears, but it is a that's a little 'closed- in'. All of these people posting that "the D100/M1 have the same circuitry as the SBM-1" are completely mistaken. IIRC, the Sony operating manual for my late- model SBM-1 (late 2000) mentions the D100 as a compatible device. The confusion results because the D100/M1 has a 20-bit A/D, which is internally dithered to 16-bit but *without using noise shaping*. The D7/D8 has a 16-bit A/D. >a question regarding the equipment configuration I have been using to dub my favorite LPs onto CD. For this purpose I feed the audio line outputs of my Onkyo tuner/amplifier which serves as the pre-amp for my turntable into the analog inputs of my Fostex D5 which in turn has its TOS link S/PDIF output fed into the TOS link S/PDIF input of my computer resident DIO 2496. >With the D5 in "Record" or "Record Pause" its analog input signals are relayed as optical S/PDIF data to the computer where Wave Lab or Sound Stream takes care of creating .WAV files for the CD burning. I just let the D5 copy whatever input I give it onto a "sacrificial" DAT tape. I would think that this is going to create a lot of wear on your deck. You mean, the D5 does not have a A/D passthrough mode keeping the electronics running but the mechanism idle? >Although I am largely satisfied with the results thus obtained, I am curious as to the fidelity of the D5's A to D and whether it is comparable to that of the apparently highly regarded SBM-1, or is it in fact no better than that of the Sony D8. If it were me, I would avoid the D5's A/D converter. I have never been all that pleased with recordings made through it. I've A/Bd it against other good converters in the field, splitting an analog feed to it and other decks. To my ears, the D5 has a strangely unmusical quality that is both somewhat harsh, while simultaneously lacking fine detail. My recollection is a little fuzzy here, but I believe that this deck, when switched to "unbalanced in' via its XLR analog inputs, still unnecessarily routes the signal throught the balanced- to-unbalanced input converter, that the switch simply lowers the gain of this stage. I'm certain that I would dramatically prefer the SBM-1 A/D in this case. Your only problem may be interfacing the SBM-1's digital output to the D5's digital inputs, since the D5 has only Toslink in, and not coax. Your best bet might be a Sony adaptor which directly adapts the 7-pin output to coax out. Alternatively, you can use the standard kind of adaptors which go from Sony 7- pin to SPDIF coax. Then, you build an adaptor which goes from RCA to the XLR AES/EBU port. ('hot' of the RCA goes to XLR pin 2, RCA 'ground' to pins 3 and 1.) This will make the connection but you might find the D5 does not recognize the lower-than-normal SPDIF signal level of the SBM-1. In this case, routing the signal through a MidiMan CO-2 would solve the problem. So would a Midiman CO3, which has an AES/EBU output available directly. >of my computer resident DIO 2496. This is another option for you to use, going directly from your Onkyo preamp's tape output to the unbalanced analog-in of the MidiMan 2496 card. If you have software that can work at 88.2k and/or 24-bit resolution, and your computer hardware is up to the task, you might find that recording high-resolution WAV files directly from your LP's to be a good move. Although I haven't really critically listened to the 2496's A/D section, I was pretty impressed with it's D/A when playing back 24-bit files on a recent project...Your ears must be the judge, of course. [Whatever you do, it is my opinion that if you quantize at 16-bit/44.1k, you want to try to avoid doing *anything* to the digital data subsequently. One valid scenario is to use a noise-shaped A/D (like the SBM-1, or a Apogee or AD2K+ etc) at 44.1k, then use a good, bit-accurate CDR standalone to copy the exact data right to CD. And be done with it. Otherwise, you need to start out quantizing at a higher-than CD bit-depth, so that you can have "headroom" above your final delivery media, and that all 16-bits on CD can be as accurate as they possibly can be.] Using your Midiman Audiophile 2496, and recording these high-resolution intermedia files, you can (very carefully) equalize, if necessary, and perhaps use a bit of high quality multi-band limiting (like Waves L1) to ultimately get a higher signal level on CD (thus accurately preserving more of that LP resolution--this assuming that the LP in question never went through a 16-bit conversion). After processing in the software of your choice, resample to 44.1k/24bit, then noise-shape to 44.1k/16 and burn your CDs. Or, you could get a DVD-R burner and archive your intermediate high-res data files to DVD, so you don't have to repeat this process all over again in five years. I think by then many of us will look back on the CD and DAT as useful, but limited, tools of the past. That's my $0.02. cheers, Keith

Haven't done much cloning in the last year or so, so the hours on the heads are pretty low. The deck hasn't gotten much use at all over the last year.. that's why it's being sold. Has only been serviced for head cleaning and alignment by Pro-Digital.) Eco-Charge Beta Battery System Purchased new from Sonic Sense for $250 on 7/27/98 This is the two battery system with charger. Each battery runs the DA-P1 for around 5 hours. Portabrace AR-DA-P1 Purchased new from Eco-Charge for $190 in Sept. 1999 I have the receipts and manuals for everything except the Portabrace. Everything is in mint condition and I have never had a problem with any of this equipment. All offers will be considered, but I am not in any rush to get rid of this stuff for less than it is worth. I'd also be willing to do some sort of a trade+cash to downgrade to a Sony D8 if anyone is looking to upgrade from the D8 to the DA-P1. I have Jpeg pictures of the package/deck if you would like to see them. Graham

Actually, if the D5 is anything like the Tascam DA-20 (and I'm led to believe the internal electronics are similar), after about five minutes in record-pause the head will quit spinning, but the signal will continue to flow. You'll see the play button LED go out when this happens, but the record button LED will stay lit. I use mine like this a lot and think it's less head wear than running a scratch tape. It might wear out that segment of the tape you're paused on, though. :) Take care, Pat
From: krichard@som.umass.edu Subject: do CDR Standalones properly handle Sector boundaries? Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 13:42:53 -0500 (EST) Here is a question I've had rolling around in my mind for a while but have not yet bothered to investigate myself. Do stand-alone burners produce CDs that are Red-Book compatible with regard to sector boundaries and the 588 rule? Once the machines sense a ID marker arriving via S/PDIF, or feel the user press the "track-advance" button, do they wait to change a track until it is on a boundary? (I'm specifically wondering abut the HHb series: CDR800, 830BurnIt, CDR850) Alternatively, and if they do not, is there a way to to make a computer duplicating program to be "non-Red Book compliant" on this issue? i.e., 'perfectly duplicate the following disc, and don't worry that it's not red-book standard--just don't pad out any tracks with extra space)'? I just recently installed a DAW system and have never concerned myself with this before. During my last two professional projects, the mastering house took care of these matters and I didn't pay enough attention to that detail while sitting there.
