Same reason they don't put standard connections on a lot of their
devices. They get to squeeze you for all sorts of "optional"
accessories to get their stuff to interface with the rest of the
standard world.

I mostly tape here in Austin in small clubs to mid-sized clubs. I used to
use my SoundPro standard cardioids with fairly good results, but they were
lacking something in the vocals. So, I looked around for a good little
stereo mic on a budget. Came across the MS907. Love it for the price and
what I want to get out of the recordings. Really great vocals and makes
good little recordings. Since I got it, I have not used my SoundPros. The
vocals are not nearly as clear. I have read that Sony is obviously more
consumer than pro so you get a good little mic at a low price because they
work on volume. Do some searching on Google groups for MS907. For $72, it
is really worth having, even as a backup mic. It has become my main mic.
I paid $72.99 at CellPhonesForCheap.com. Lowest price I found and was
delivered promptly with no problems.
Oh, and I don't work for them. Don't know anything about them other than
that one experience with them.

Dear Datheads:
Thanks for all the digital information. As my hobby progresses, I see the entertainment industry focusing on 5.1 and DTS as a standard in most stereo receivers. I have a DVD computer system, with a SPDIF (RCA and Optical) output to a 5.1 speaker system, along with all that DAT stuff most of you also use.
The question is, can we start recording concerts in 5.1 format? DTS, and with Dolby?
Thanks for the discussions.

hey all,
in response to the co2 question i use a 9 volt per set with mine to feed
the minidiscers and such as well. this is a real handy device for 60 bucks
that some of the analog patchers can use to make the next step into digital
recording. this does make a difference when using md. i have tried w/oput
and with and have been more satisfied with until i got a d8. just my 2 cents
on the device. there is a co3 that defeats scms as well for around 180 bucks
but its a 9 volt eating monster.
see a few of you in hawaii i hope????
ds
>>>>>>I use the CO2 at shows for patchers. I feed it from the digi-out
of my SBM-1 (coax) and that gives a coax out feed and an optical
feed (minidisc'ers like that). There's too much hassle with sony
v. [everyone else] in their S/PDIF* so having a CO2 is nice. I power
mine at shows with a 9V battery (with the appropriate plug). It even
seems to work fine with a 6V eco-charge, but YMMV.
*if the active components for the S/PDIF will fit into a 7 pin plug,
why the hell didn't sony just put them in their deck and save everyone
this hassle?

I have the following available for sale:
Tascam DA-P1, purchased new for $2099 in Winter '99. All literature,
original box, original packing materials retained. Meticulously maintained;
unit serviced (heads cleaned) by Pro Digital Summer '00. Also will include
6 volt 7 Ah SLA (PowerSonic) with the unit--about 18 months old...likely
about 2 years of life left. 4-pin XLR modification made to allow interchange
of AC/DC PS and battery. A charger for the SLA is included, as are four (4)
DG90P DDS tapes and one (1) Sony DG Cleaning Cartridge, as well as one (1)
S/PDIF coaxial cable. Even though I've had the unit for nearly two years,
it's only seen about 25-30 gigs. I've logged about 75-80 hours of recording
time on the heads; about half of that coming after the relatively recent
head cleaning. Playback time is approximated at 20 hours. I have numerous
pictures I took of the unit earlier today and have them .jpg'd ready to go
for anyone that'd like to see them. I project the entire package to be
worth about what a new unit sells for. That said, I'd like to get $1300-ish
for everything. I'm negotiable, so if anyone on this list is interested,
please let me know.
In addition to the DA-P1, I have an item that might interest those who
operate an Apogee AD500. I have one custom cable, a BNC/m > S/PDIF
coaxial/m, made from Canare L-4CFB 75 ohm coaxial cable. It is unopened,
still factory-sealed, and is about 2.5 feet in length. I have a picture of
this cable as well for anyone interested. I paid $50 for the cable.
I have a Graham-Patten AES-DATS Converter (Model 10) with a BNC/m > S/PDIF
coaxial/f adaptor. This converter will convert 110 ohm AES-EBU signal to 75
ohm S/PDIF (coaxial). I paid $50 for the converter and adaptor together.
Also, I have two cables I was originally using for monitor sends, but no
longer will need. I have a pair of cables, each about 1.5 feet long, made
from Canare L-4E6S cabling with Neutrik connectors. They are XLR/F > TRS/M.
The pair cost nearly $50.
I also have a single (one) Audio Technica AT8410a shockmount, factory-sealed
and never used. Anyone can have this at around the price of a new one. I
have pictures of this as well as the two above items.
Also, I have two MiniDisc units that I haven't used in two years. The
first, which I've modified to be rack-mounted, is a Sony MDS-JE520. I have
all original literature and the original remote control that supports
alpha-numeric titling of discs and tracks. The rackmount kit is attached.
Coupled with that is a portable that I used heavily--a Sony MZ-E40. It is
still in perfect working order, but has a few blemishes on the surface.
Anyone that might buy the deck can just as soon take this along with it.
I'm open to offers on this one.
Finally, I have three (3) Monster S/PDIF TOSlink cables that I used with
various consumer equipment. I, of course, have .jpg's for anyone that would
like to see them. They each retailed for about $40 per cable when I bought
them. I'll throw them in with the MD decks if anyone has interest. I'd
like to keep them bundled, but if someone wants them separated, I'd estimate
$30 for them all.
If anyone has interest in any of the above, please contact me.
Many thanks,
Chris Jones

Subject: 16 bit Wave Files and Track ID's
Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2001 01:27:53 -0500
I am converting DAT recordings to wave files on my computer, and then
archiving to CDR/DVD-audio. In the process I am having difficulty getting
track ID's that carry over to the CDR/DVD-R from my wave files. I am
currently using Sound Forge 2.0 which is a track at once program. Are there
any software programs that allow track ID's on wave files that carry over to
CDR/DVDR burners? The only way I can get an Track ID to change is to create
separate wave files for each song but leads to blank space between tracks.
Any help would be appreciated:

For sale:
(1) Sony POC-DA12P (new in box)
This is the Sony optical cable (for Sony D100 or Sony PCM-M1) that
allows digital in or out of the Sony DAT deck. There is a 7-pin
connector at one end of the cable and a pair of optical connectors
at the other end (one optical for digital input, and one for output.)
This cable has never been used & is still in the original packaging.
I do not have the original receipt, but I believe that I paid $75 for
this cable a few months ago. I would like to sell this for $50.
Please send all inquires to:
