My problem is not that, it's that the only software i do have will only create compressed 5.1 for dvd video, and will not do uncompressed 16/48 5.1 for dvd-audio as with many 24 bit tapers out there, i'm waiting for a easy to use and affordable dvd-audio burning software scott
From: henry@dmbtapers.org Subject: re: 5.1 recording Date: 22 Dec 2001 11:46:47 -0800 Right... that's why we tape Dave Matthews. Not stuck with the general taper-section tapes. Remember, the 5.1 we did was from the 2nd row right up on a stack. And listen to some 5.1 recordings like ours. The rear channels are more fun to listen to than the front. You get that reverb off the back of the amphtheatre so you can barely hear the music, but the crowd interaction at a DMB show with everyone singing and clapping is very cool. I'm sure I could whip up some of it from Scott.C.Brown. What we wanted to do was give the listener the feeling of actually being at the show. From hearing the tracks individualy and imagining it all together, we certainly accomplished that goal. We don't want instruments coming out of all the channels. I don't know why you would. Doesn't resemble a live performance in the slightest. And again, stack tapes sound nothing like the tapers section. Mono stacks for DMB shows, yes... but you don't get that distant sound... the tapes resemble your distance to the sound source. Anyway, it can be done, it sounds cool, IT WAS FUN!... Here is the press release info: "People living in the NY/CT/NJ area and who are not lucky enough to have tickets for the Apollo show on new years eve will be able to tune into 92.3 FM K-Rock and listen to some of the show live - starts at approximately 11pm US EST. " They are an absolutely incredible band if you havent heard them (they are time magazine's band of the year). I have thousands of recordings by hundreds of bands to trade. You guys can check out my list here: http://fmorris.prohosting.com/bootlegs/ I would be willing to cover the cost of your blank media as well. Thanks in advance! --Frank Morris--

Just pull them out James and you will then see the things for which you are looking . Hope this helps, Mike

From: Chris Jones <jonescx@bc.edu> Subject: Re: 5.1 recording Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 17:41:49 -0500 Some of the easiest means by which one can bounce (compressed) surround mixes to disk comes in the form of a package created by Universal Audio for MAS. I haven't gotten my hands on any version yet, but I've heard quite a bit about them all. DP 3 can mix surround native, but these tools make getting a compressed mix to disk much easier. All hearsay since I haven't yet played with it, but worth checking out--assuming of course one doesn't want a PCM surround mix, which I'd think many of us would much rather have. I've experimented a bit with both 5.1 and 6.2 surround on my MAS and I must say, the addition of surround panners makes things relatively easy to place. But, bear in mind that most of these sequencer programs are aimed at the film score crowd--projects ultimately output in DTS or AC-3--few individuals outside of production and mastering houses have the capability to author dvd-audio discs. But, assuming one just wants to print a compressed surround mix to disc and put a few still shots or black screen as the video track, this is some of the best stuff with which to do it: There are three versions of SmartCode Pro for Digital Performer ($795 MSRP) users: DTS-DVD ($1495 MSRP), for encoding prior to DTS format DVD duplication; DTS-CD ($495 MSRP) for creating 5.1 preview masters using standard CD-burners, and Dolby Digital ($795 MSRP) for creating AC3 DVD masters. All three versions have newly updated graphic user interfaces. SmartCode Pro/Dolby Digital for Digital Performer also includes the latest AC3 algorithms from Dolby Labs. Of course we're talking about tools exclusive to Mac, which is where all things multimedia belong anyway ;-) Hope everyone enjoys the season! Chris Jones jonescx@bc.edu
From: "James B. Wilkinson" <jimmy@CS.cofc.EDU> Subject: Re: puzzled by optical connectors Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 19:17:54 -0500 Thanks to all the guys who straightened me out on this. The first reply reached me in 8 minutes! You're all right. What I was looking at are the handles of the little pull-out plugs that protect the works inside from dirt and damage. (BLUSH) Believe it or not, I had actually pulled on them, but evidently had been afraid to pull hard enough. The other strange part is that the bottom of the little hole in the middle of the plug looks for all the world like the end of an optical fiber if that's what you're expecting it to be. That's what I was trying to poke the end of the cable into. I guess they put that hole there just to see how many people would do that. Thanks again, guys. This list is really good value. -- ============================================================= Jimmy Wilkinson | Perfesser of Computer Science jimmy@cs.CofC.edu | The College of Charleston (843) 953-8160 | Charleston SC 29424 If there is one word to describe me, that word would have to be "profectionist". From: "D A T" <dat@kylepike.com> Subject: Re: Toslink connectors Reply-To: <dat@kylepike.com> Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 23:09:36 -0500 Jimmy, Those black plastic square things are just dust covers. pull em out and you should be able to plug your toslink cable in. FYI cables with toslink connectors on both ends are much more useful than a toslink-miniplug cable. you can always plug a miniplug adapter onto the end of a cable, but i've found myself in the field with only a miniplug and needing a toslink more than once... now i keep the toslink/mini adapter plugged into my md's input, and can use any optical cable (including the one that's coming from my DAT) This isn't a stupid question, rather a common one, and i thought it best to respond to the group to get this into the archives..
