This is for the Phil Lesh & Friends at the Beacon Theatre,
NYC on 11/27/01. It was recorded w/ AKG mics from
the first row of the loge, and is on one KAO 60m DAT
(1st set) and one Sony 90m DAT (2nd set).
In return, I'd like two sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DATs
(or one 60 and one 90) plus postage.
First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it
(unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I
would give preference to...in which case tell me how
many you're willing to make).
Happy Holidays,

Hi there!
Aaccording to deadbase your tape of 2-21-1969 is correctly labelled
and tape tracker's list is wrong.
http://www.dharmarose.com/deadbase/dbquery.php3?id=379
Also, I don't find it unusual that they would play such a great song
combo multiple nights in a row, they wouldn't play it the same way
every time anyhow. According to Deadbase Steven>11>lovelight was
played at 1-25-69 I, 1-26-69 II, 2-6-69, 2-7-69a, 2-14-69 I. Also in
that time period, they followed Steven>Eleven with Death Don't Have
No Mercy fairly frequently, then closed the show with lovelight.
Have a Jerry New Year!!!

i had the aiwa hd-x1. i used a rc car battery from radio shack. it was
7.2V and 3000mAh. it ran the deck for about 3 hours. you can either buy a
small dc connector and the rc battery connectors to make a cable from the
battery to the deck, or cannibalize the power source for the plug. email me
if you have anymore questions.

hi
ok, im done with my CD compilation project and now have the other TASCAM
DA20 mkII ready to go. its MINT with less than 20 hours on its playback and
less than 10-15 hours on the record heads. this is the second of a pair of
DA20s
i bought to take DATs submitted for a compilation CD my organization
(www.dcbu.org) is working on to grab and dump the wav files onto a hard
drive.
thats all it was used for. w/ manual, boxes, etc.
this model defeats copy protection, specs out with the best of them, and is
3
space rack mounted. its a step up from the Sony R-300 and its SWEET! for
more info, go to http://ttapes.com/dat_decks/deck_specs.asp?deck=da20.
anyone want to work out a trade? my almost new tascam deck ($685 at
terrapin) for your portable DAT (like a D8). plus ill throw in some cash, if
the
deal calls for it.
email me with an idea?

Subject: Sony DTC 750 and SBM
Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 13:11:24 -0800
Browsing various locations on the Web I noted in one particular but non
detailed piece of "prose" a statement that the DTC 750 implements the
Sony/Philips "Super Bit Mapping" technique in its A/D conversion circuitry.
Would one or other of our technically cognoscente brethren familiar with
the guts of this Sony DAT recorder be kind enough to confirm whether or not
this is so.
Many thanks for any light that anyone may be able to throw on this subject.
The reason that I ask the question is that I have a DTC 750 that is
currently inactive as a DAT recorder per se on account of its needing head
replacement. However it is perfectly capable of converting audio input to
digital output at its TOS link output and allowing me to present this
output to my computer for burning CDRs from LP recordings. I have been
using my Fostex D5 for this function, but it annoys me by requiring that
there be a DAT tape in the drive before its A/D converter can be activated.
With a tape in place it will run the heads against a "stalled" tape in the
pause mode for about 5 minutes until a time-out function stops head
rotation. For my purpose this procedure is an irritation and furthermore
introduces unwelcome head wear.
The Sony DTC 750 on the other hand doesn't care if there is a tape in the
drive or not and by simply pressing the "Record" button activates its A/D
circuit. I am therefore inclined to use it for my audio transcription needs
and if this machine does in fact incorporate SBM I can dismiss any notion I
might have harbored of acquiring an SBM-1 outboard A/D convertor to
optimize my results.
Once again thanks for any help that may be forthcoming.
Mike

I tried a stereo T-microphone from Sound pro, but it could not handle much
volume, so I upgraded to thier binaurals...honestly for the price they
sounded great...I didnt have a bass roll off (which nearly all shows i
record need it for one reason or another) and I found that the two mics were
not very well balanced...almost 3db difference between the right and left
channel. I finally upgraded to Core Sound Binaurals...which are better than
anything I ever got from SP...also Len is the man..he is a solid business
man..You pay a few bux for his expertise, service and quality, but the proof
is in my tapes...
Unfortunatly my MD and Core Sound Binaurals were stolen during the Cannabis
Cup this year in Amsterdam, so I have upgraded to DAT and am about to invest
into some Schoeps MK4's....
One question for you, I havnt heard of these mics "Soundman's OKM's"
Can you provide a link...Im always interested in Stealth mics....(design,
stealthyness, and specs etc)
There are about 6 other companies out there doing stealth, but most seem to
mimic (ripoff) SP or Core sounds Mics designs...

I am looking for some stealth mic solution that offer more high fidelity. I
like the Core Sound HEB's, but binaural recording in my town tend to be TALK
CITY!!! so I'm leaning towards the Schoeps MK4 card caps... What other high
end mics are available that are small enough to be stealthy?
Also what techniques to you use for mic placement (for recording, I can
always get my gear in...) I have used hats, shirts, and glasses...
Does anyone make a hat that allows for mic direction placement such as ORTF
etc??? (Someone should make one!!!) while being stealthy. I have thought of
a hat that could encapsulate all of this, and will make it someday!
Anyway any insite on your techniques would be appreciate..I am also happy to
discuss this off the board. Thanks All..

Yo
I've had some strange interference when recording recently, found out its
related to deck movement, Its fine when the DAT doesnt move but when its on
me and I move to music or if you just wave DAT in air this intererence comes
in, I guess the tape is moving, its lost its anti shock. I have dropped it a
couple of times.
Is it a Sony service centre job ?
Its a Sony PCM-M1
Any quick fixes ?

Tried the hard boot, turned off the power for a couple hours, got the "Clock

The unit still responds to the remote. Anybody have a solution here, or is
service necessary?

Need help to understand it what happened recently
INTRO
My setup of this recordings:
ADR* sat receiver (48Khz)>Audiophile 2496 (44.1khz)>Soundforge (44,1Khz)>CD
Architect
* ADR (ASTRA DIGITAL RADIO) (satellite broadcast system used by most german
radios = sample is 48 khz)
THE STORY
I taped with above lineage an excellent concert by Mike Keanelly.
Later I arrange a trade w/a guy.
This guys was waiting this recording from another taper, but he wanted
compared also my recording.
When got both on hands, he told me that my version was faster, and that
probably I taped at 48Khz.
QUESTION:
I'm sure I taped as above, and now I'm trouble because I tape many concerts
by satellite .
I'm wrong when I select 44.1 in Audiophile to receive the incoming 48 Khz
broadcast?
Maybe may I select 48 khz ("IN" audiophile2496) and ONLY with Soundforge
records the cd at 44.1 Khz?
Another question:
When I have to transfer analog cassettes to CD, I always selected 44.1 KHZ
in Audiophile 2496: It's correct?

I hate to ask you guys such a simple question, but I have this sinking fear
I am gonna do some irreversible damage....
I have a decent Onkyo reciever. Currently I have two Acoustic Research
speakers hooked up. I want to hook up two more Bose bookshelf for my
kitchen....
Am I going to blow the reciever?
Unfortunately, I don't really understand the whole wattage
thing.....hopefully someone can enlighten me...
here are the specs from what I can tell...
Onkyo TX 8511
100 watts/channel
and something called:
Multi-room Capability
I don't have any specs on the acoustic research, but they are small
bookshelf speakers...
the Bose are 301 IV's
any thoughts?

Subject: Selecting Sound Card Input For CDWav.exe
Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2001 11:44:09 EST
In DAT-heads digest 161, jopeter1 <jopeter1@vt.edu> asks how to select inputs from the CDWav.exe program.
It is a very simple matter to switch inputs for CDwav....Or any other similar program, for that matter.
That program uses whatever "Windows" was last set on, for recording (input) purposes. Windows has a built-in sound recorder program that allows you to go to a preferences menu and set what Windows will use. This setting is "global" unless you change it. And best of all, no sort of re-boot is required to make a change of playback or recording sound cards in use (if you have multiple cards, as many Dat-Heads do).
With no other software running, you have to go to the "Microsoft Sound Recorder" program {start button, programs, accessories, multimedia, sound recorder}
(alternately, the file path may be c:\windows\sndrec32.exe)
Once you've launched the application, select the "edit" drop-down menu, and select "audio properties" from this menu.
If you are for some reason operating mouse-less (I can't imagine why you would be, but I digress), you can select "Alt-e", then "u" on the keyboard once the application is running. (no, the quotes are not to be literally typed, they are just for bracketing the choices here).
Once you are in that audio properties menu, you can select the appropriate recording sound card from the record menu, and the sample rate, etc. for sound quality to what you need (44.1, 16 bit, stereo, if applicable). You can also select which playback sound card to use here, too, in the playback menu.
Then after closing the Windows Sound Recorder application, when you launch your CDwav program, you will find it is "listening" to your digital card, and you can record to your heart's (or hard drive's) desire.

Dewd -
Good question! Turns out, it isn't about watts, but ohms. Ohms is the term
we give to the "push back" of a electrical component. Like: A piece of wire
doesn't push back much at all - juice flows right on through. A piece of
plastic pushes back a lot - no juice flows through normal plastic at all.
Your amp is rated to pump 100 watts when a speaker with 8 ohms of "push
back" is connected. If the specifications were detailed enough, it might also
say that the amp is rated at maybe 150-175 watts if a 4 ohm speaker (or
speakers) were connected. It works like this: The less the speaker(s) push
back, the more power the amp tries to produce. Problem is, the amp can
end up trying to produce more power than its components were designed for.
That's when the amp gets to hot and wants to fry.
Most of our home speakers are rated with 8 ohms of push back (actually the
electrical term is "impedance".) If we connect two 8 ohm speakers (per channel),
then the total push back seen by the amplifier is 4 ohms. (I know that doesn't
make sense instinctively, but that's how it works. In this case, 8+8=4.)
So anyway, by connecting both sets of speakers, your amp will try to work
a little harder. But most amps will run happily all day with a 4 ohm load. It
may produce a little more heat at loud volumes, and if you run it hard enough
it may shut down automatically until it cools down. For the most part, it won't
make any difference unless its Saturday night and your house is balls-to-the-wall
with rock'n'roll. If you want to cover that possibility, buy an extra amplifier and
connect the tape-out of your receiver to the aux input of the second amp. Now
you have lots of power and a full set of controls for the second set of speakers.
Finally, the "Multi-Room Capability" is a feature that protects the amplifier
when you connect more than one pair of speakers - sort a of a fail-safe setup.
Bottom line: Go for it!
Bob
