As you probably already know, Sony doesn't recommend using DDS tapes in their audio decks, although I've been doing it with no problems so far other than the rewind anomaly. I'm afraid this is just something you have to live with since the logic for controlling the rewind speed in built in to the deck's firmware. I don't know about your START ID problem as I haven't tried copying from the optical port. I just got my deck recently, too, and haven't completely exercised it yet. You can order a manual for the 59ES directly from Sony, as I did, by calling them at 1-800-488-7669. The part number is 375561221 and the cost is $5.00 plus $2.50 shipping. Not unreasonable. They might also have a service manual but I didn't ask since I already had a copy. I could make you a copy of mine if Sony can't supply one, but it's a minor hassle since there are a number of fold-out schematics that have to be dealt with. Regards, Chet =====Original Message===== From: "Jacob Alifrangis" Subject: Manuals for Dat Decks Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2002 17:15:12 -0800 Hey people I have a bit of a question. About two years ago I bought a sony DTC-59ES Dat deck for 50 bucks at a pawn shop there are two quircks in the unit that are not like wear and tear things: 1. It doesn't seem to listen to trackmarks (start-id) from the Optical port. 2. if using a 120M DDS It won't rewind the tape at full speed until it gets to abs 01:59:59 I use a DDS drive to rewind all my tapes anyway so no biggie here, but still, a small annoyance. Also, does anyone on the list have a collection of the user/service manuals like those found on minidisc.org? If not, let's start one. I need the DTC-59ES manual first though :) Can you please help with these annoying quirks! If you have a paper manual that you are willing to sell or give me so I can copy (or send xeroxes) I will make it worth your while. thanks. ------------------------------ From: Len Moskowitz Subject: Re: Strange Circumstances Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 14:34:21 -0500 (EST) Mark Wamsley wrote: > I've had a strange problem since 1997 with my Sony > D-7, where I have recorded a show, then when playing > it back after recording, there is only silence. This was probably the main reason Sony fixed the problem and then changed the model number to TCD-D8; the -D7 had transport problems exactly as you noted. It doesn't erase the tape -- it simply never records while all indications are that it is. I have just read and signed the online petition: "SAVE 650 WSM - AM!" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/savewsm/ I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Best wishes, Peace, Michael Ryan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm also new to posting here, but I've been lurking on and off for quite a while, so hello everyone. I'm curious if there is a good primer site for new M1 owners with tips specific to this deck. My current mic setup is a pair of Sound Pro AT slim mini cardioids (AT 933 elements) and a Sound Pro battery box. A lot of what I record needs to be done stealth, so I got those because I like the sound, and the price was right (and they're great with MD). They also seem to perform well (to my ears) on a stand in non-stealth situations. Do any of you happen to have this combination? Is my best bet still to go line in from the battery box (as I have been with MD), or does the preamp in the M1 suck a lot less than Sony MD preamps (which are terrible with brickwalling all the time)? Also, what's the preferred battery system for M1 users out there? EcoCharge? Lots of AAs? Just an extra set of the rechargeables like the ones it comes with? I guess ideally, I'd like something like the EcoCharge, but I just spent all my cash for a little while. I've also heard of those CD batteries that have the same footprint as a little CD Walkman being used for DAT. How do those do? Any answers, links, of suggestions would be appreciated! Reply-To: Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 23:27:38 -0500 Looking for tapers of the last leg of the Dixie Dregs tour...here are the dates: 11 Jan 2002 House of Blues New Orleans, LA 12 Jan 2002 Deep Ellum Live Dallas, TX 14 Jan 2002 Bash on Ash Tempe, AZ 15 Jan 2002 Slim's San Francisco, CA Scott DuBose 16 Jan 2002 Icon Supperclub Palo Alto, CA 17 Jan 2002 Ventura Theater Ventura, CA 18 Jan 2002 The Coach House San Juan Capistrano, CA 19 Jan 2002 House of Blues Los Angeles, CA 20 Jan 2002 Catamaran Resort Hotel San Diego, CA Of EXTRA special interest is the show on the 18th at the Coach House...where the Dregs will have the group FWAP opening up for them. FWAP is 2/3rds of ZAZEN who are an excellent instrumental band featuring Andy West (yes, the former Dregs bassist) and Joaquin Lievano, the virtuoso electric guitarist that has played with Jean-Luc Ponty, as well as a who's who of jazz/fusion/prog artists. For more info on FWAP see: http://www.fwap.info/index.html Here is a description which sounds highly interesting- "fwap was formed by Andy West and Joaquin Lievano to create a new vehicle for music they had in mind that was in some ways the opposite of the highly orchestrated and complex song forms they have used in Zazen. At the same time it is similar in aim, seeking a sense of adventure, imagination, and beauty in the songs. fwap is creating music on the fly with minimal orchestration, yet it employs familiar song structures, counterpoint, and repetitive patterns that build on each other, all the while retaining a sense of musical cohesion." Sounds good to me...someone please tape it and please let me know. Hell, I will even pay for your tickets and your DAT...plus, you get a Dregs show to boot! Also, still looking for some from the previous leg, especially post George dates, where Steve Morse played some Beatles/Harrison tunes. I have several, both recent and older Dregs shows on DAT and CDR. If able to tape or interested in trading, please give me a ping. Thanks for the BW! I kept the DAT rolling while this occured, it lasts for about 2 min. So for about 2 min. you can hear me being approached by an usher and being asked to put away my bag and me putting away my bag and coming back, all while the show is still going on. Luckily I have a second source of the same show, which doesn't sound a whole lot better than my source. I'd like to seamlessly splice the other source into the "missing" portion of my show. any tips? _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: Kevin Brown Subject: Stupid DAT (OK, CD-R/RW!) Questions... Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 23:57:32 -0800 (PST) I have been "archiving" vinyl and individual tracks from CDs on MD and DAT. Just got a CD burner. Will stick with DAT, punt MD, but now I have CD-R/RW questions... 1) Should I be worried about "jitter" ? PC CD-ROM drive to "extraction" to my hard drive, to writing on my separate CD-R/RW drive. (Or, DAT to PC, back to DAT even.) Or, is "extraction" different than simply 1x "digital recording"? Anyone ever test CD-R/RW drives for jitter? Or am I just being paranoid? 1a) A CD-R/RW FAQ anywhere? 2) I have figured out how to label normal full-size jewel cases. How do I do the 5mm 1/2-size cases? (Are there "J-cards" or "CD case" card for these as well?) 3) Is there an equivalent to DAT-Heads and this list for CD burner questions? Or maybe a CD burner forum? 4) Any advantage at all to an external stereo burner over a PC burner (Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, etc.)? Aside from the higher media cost... :-) 5) If I "copy" from my MDs through the coax digital output of my MD deck into my sound card (or external stereo burner), can I expect the same quality as just playing the MD? (I know, ATRAC and not PCM.) I think I know this answer, but I have to ask! Sorry for the bandwidth if this stuff really doesn't belong here, but this *is* a better place to ask than MD places. (Linear PCM is linear PCM after all...) Thank you!! Kevin. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2002 03:28:35 -0500 (EST) There's no need to worry about jitter. One of the best places to learn about CDR is the etree faq, www.etree.org (and the things it points to). I use regular CD case cards for the half-thickness cases, but cut the end flaps narrower. > 3) Is there an equivalent to DAT-Heads and this list > for CD burner questions? Or maybe a CD burner forum? dat-heads is for all digital recording; etree is probably a better list, though it's more about sharing the music, there's a lot of technical stuff there too. > 4) Any advantage at all to an external stereo burner > over a PC burner (Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, etc.)? > Aside from the higher media cost... :-) No, in fact there are disadvantages: they're slower, don't support data files (losslessly compressed), etc. > 5) If I "copy" from my MDs through the coax digital > output of my MD deck into my sound card (or external > stereo burner), can I expect the same quality as just > playing the MD? Into the external burner, yes. Into a sound card, it depends on the card. Some resample all inputs, so not those; others are bit-accurate, so those would be OK. I am recording with cd wave and monitoring the sound through my stereo system. Everything sounds fine when I'm listening to it while it's recording. However, when I open up the file and listen to it there is a crackling noise during some of the songs that was not originally there. I did all that the troubleshooting guide told me to do as far as lowering the graphic acceleration and making sure the "Reset Rate When Idle" box is not checked. The clicking noise doesn't occur every time, as I have recorded a few shows with no flaws. Any help is appreciated.
