That's a bad idea. A smart charger (the only kind you'd want to keep
a battery on permanently) checks the back-voltage to determine when
the battery is fully charged and switches to trickle. With three
batteries, it's guaranteed to do the wrong thing to at least one of
them.
Rotating them every day (or even every week) should keep them
sufficiently topped off for all practical purposes.

I have been taping for a while now with A pair of AKG C-1000's straight into
a Tascam DA-P1.
I am having trouble controlling the level on the mics. They are either
really hot and my tapes come out kind of distorted. OR, I use the db pad and
I don't get enough gain to cover the distance between me and the sound. I
realize this probably stems from me not knowing what the hell I'm doing.
With that in mind.
I know there is something out there I can insert between the P1 and the mics.
I would also like to incorporate my AT-822 into the mix as a center channel.
I am finding my AKG's very thin and not very warm. They don't pick up the
vocal very well. I am hoping you can help. Whatever it is would need to
be portable, as you can also see I am a detective, and be able to be powered
in the field.
If you might know of a solution to solve my delima. I would like to hear
from you.
I will give three free internet karate lessons to the first person with a
good response thatw ont cost me more than $300. Is that wishful thinking??
Any information that would help would be apprpeciated.
Thanks

These are shows Ive been to and do not have yet
from digital sources and am not certian if these
even exist as full digitals(ie:dsb or daud)! My
list is all master>dig or just full blown digital
either sbd or auds using schoeps, neuman,
sennheiser, ams, beyer nak and b+k's. Im looking
for these shows below in full digi or master
ana>digital or what ever the best source was and
I have a ton to trade and am in the process of
transfering 1200 dats and 400 beta pcms to cdr.
Here is my 1st ever wish list:
Jerry:12-3,4+5-87 Wiltern T L.A. (dsb or dat aud
if they exist or more than likely analog
master>dat*sbd or aud with any of the above
mentioned mics and this gos for the rest of my
wants)
Dead:1-28,29+30-87 SF(analog sbd master or analog
master(or preferably digital aud if they even
exist in full digital....Im not sure But assume
they do)?
Dead:12-9,10+11-88 Long Beach healys in house fm
master analog or sbd master>dig(or if they even
exist dig aud)
Dead:11-13,14+15-87 Long Beach daud aaud sbdm ?
Dead:6-13+15-87 Ventua (I have the 14th schoeps
fob) so I know the digi auds are out the but
possibly not widly circulated and can't recall
ever seening any sbds listed on anyones trade
list.
Jerry:11-11,12,13,15+16-90 L.A. daud do exist I
have 1 set from d10>schoeps cmc 34s fob. Also Im
aware that many dead tapers such as myself drift
away from trading and some of them never get back
into it at all,but Im sure with the list I have I
will find all these shows off this dat-hads
digest list and look forward to establishing some
new fresh trade connections! Heres my 4 page Dead
dat,pcm + cdr list....I only record and accept
cdrs.I have no desire to accept dats since Im
transfering them both day and night to cdr:

Actually, this depends on the type of recording you do. If you do a lot of
recording from analog sources you may like the standalone stereo burner
because a) you can record directly to CD in real time, whereas on a PC you
have the extra, time consuming step of recording/assembling your stuff on
hard disk before recording it; and b) the A/D converters in the standalone
unit are likely to be better than what you have in the typical PC unless
you've invested in a professional quality sound card.

I'm unclear on the details, but I recall reading somewhere, a couple of
years ago, that jitter DOES affect audio extraction from a CD, and that
Plextor drives had the lowest jitter measurements (at the time).

You may want to investigate ROXIO's mailing list,
http://www.roxio.com/en/interest/community/index.html. Although it's
primarily a forum for problems and questions related to their CD burning
software, a lot of the discussions are more general in nature and there are
some knowledgeable list members that can handle the technical questions.

I'd rather an Analog recording go through an HHb
CDR-830/850 any way, any day. Best dang A/D for CD
that you'll find.
For DAT transfers, any bit-perfect (1-1 bitcopy)
digital Audiocard and decent CD burner will do very
nicely. Don't forget to burn "Disk At Once" (DAO).
The HHb will burn CD-r(computer media) and CD-RW.
It is slower and not redbook compliant. Try an EAC
extraction to see what I mean. It does make a great
sounding disk, and controls SCMS. It is easier for
those who aren't computer propellerheads. :-)

GYBE is very very open to tapers....if you have
trouble getting into a venue with your rig, find
efrim, one of their guitarists (you can spot him
easily - he's got a big mop of black hair) ... He will
get you in with your stuff..the only thing is he
doesnt like board patches cos you can never be sure of
the quality of the mix.... Audience recordings do just
fine anyways .. He told me this when I recorded them
(twice) in san francisco back in october of 2000 ...
There's a listserv for gybe that i left a few weeks
ago cos of too much crap discussion about politics and
other stuff, but the info was at
http://lists.linuxshell.net/mailman/listinfo.cgi/gybe
.. This site doesnt respond at the moment but maybe
it'll work some other time ... Please let me know when
you record them, I'd be interested in a trade!

hey kids,
this is my semi-monthly plea for dats from PF's '94 tour.
i've got about 25% of the tour on dat, which means I need
quite a bit more. If you taped any of these shows, or have
a clean clone with gear info, please get in touch. Even if you
don't wanna swap, I'd like to know whats out there.
Anybody have a clean clone of 6/16/94 Ames, Iowa? My copy (the version
with the cut 'run like hell') has some diginoise early, and i'm not sure
if the master is at fault here. i know for certain that a full source
exists because i have a 2nd gen from dat on analog of this show. its great.
I see many versions of RFK 7.9.94, but no DAUDS from the following night
at the same venue. Anything out there? Any of the Texas shows would be great.
Someone here sent me a list with many masters and clones of these TX gigs,
but he didn't wanna deal. Maybe someone has these.
And lastly, I can't find the following shows in ANY format. If any of these
exist (i don't care if it was recorded with answering machine tape), please
advise:
4/10/94 Mexico City
4/26/94 El Paso
5/23/94 Montreal (full and not sourced from video)
6/28/94 Edmonton
many thanks and happy new year,
anthony

Subject: Re: advice for splicing 2 audio sources
Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2002 11:04:53 -0500 (EST)
Steve, et. al,
There are three things you need to be aware of when splicing audio from a
different source:
1. Volume differences
2. EQ differences
3. Time differences
If both of the sources are at recorded at the same Fs, then #3 is cool,
otherwise you'll need to resample the other source to match your original.
The second is EQ.. this is best done with a spectrum analyzer at first,
and a good ear for tuning. You'll definitely need a good set of monitors
to do this, or you'll be tuning to your speakers. :) A spectrum analyzer
trace of your source will give you an idea of any presence peaks (or lack
thereof). In general, if you view a plot logarithmically, you should see
a roll-off with a curve shape approaching -1/x^n. In other words, you
should see a pretty high component in the bass spectrum, gradually rolling
off toward 20Khz. This is, of course, in the average case.
You'll want a good direct-x plug in that will let you live-preview your
EQ. You might want to grab a section of good audio from both sources, put
one in the left track, one in the right track and then fiddle with the EQ
until they both sound approximately the same.
Finally, there's volume differences. The further back a taper is, the
less dynamic range you'll see. Your best bet is to check the RMS levels
over a common section of audio. Match them up and then listen to make
sure they sound approximately the same.
Finally, there's the splicing. In order to keep your life simple as you
do this, copy the audio from your original around where you need to
splice, but add an extra 15-20 seconds before and after. You'll perform
the splice on the copied section and then when you're satisfied it's
seemless you can just paste it back into your original.
Give yourself a good 2 or three seconds of overlap on the ends of the
splice. Then look for a sonically noticeable element to sync to. It
makes it easier to find exactly matching locations in both sources. Once
you've found these on both sides, you'll want to zoom in and fine tune the
locations. Zero crossings are good places. Try to match the slopes to
ensure a good splice.
Once you've got your locations marked, copy the new audio onto the old
audio. Then take a listen. You'll probably have to find tune your
markers several times before you get it seemless. :) Good luck!
