From: Bob Siegl <bobsiegl@yahoo.com> Subject: A3/Alabama3 recordings Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 08:11:45 -0800 (PST) Has anyone recorded A3 (Alabama 3) with a good rig (or line)? If so please let me know. I'd like to hear them live. These guys play that groovy song at the beginning of the Sopranos 1st season and although I'm about 4 years late, I can't get it out of my head. I have lots to choose from with no crap. Thanks __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail! http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/

EAC is a free program most traders prefer. most CDR and .shn folks wont work with a roxio-ripped show. i believe (and someone PLEASE correct me if im wrong...like i have to ask!) that as long as a show is ripped via EAC, its ok to then burn it with roxio or adaptec or whatever with little repercussions from the audio cloning perfectionists out there. but im probably wrong...and i digress. so...if you ripped with EAC (as God intended us!), read the FAQ at etree.org as ive seen mention about this problem. it does have a solution for this problem with regards to EAC that may also work with your set roxio up. kip martin bassist for mike auldridge _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

From: Gary Watson <gary@blandest.demon.co.uk> Subject: recording from soundboard to D8? Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 19:25:17 GMT Hello, I have read a few times that a D8 cannot handle the signal from a mixing desk, due to the signal being too "hot", which I guess means it has too high a voltage? Is there ANY way of taping from the desk using a D8? Would I need an external pre-amp or something like that? Any help would be most appreciated, Death Cab For Cutie will be playing in London at the end of the month, and I will try to tape them if a D8 is capable. Here are the dates from www.beatlejame.com: Jan. 17 NY, NY BB King's Jan. 18 Glenside, PA Keswick Thr. Jan. 19 Providence, RI Lupo's Jan. 20 Hartford , CT Webster Thr. March 17 Westbury, NY Westbury Music Fair Thr. I would love to hear some of these shows since they're too far away for me to travel. I have tons of Blue Floyd and other artists to trade. I expect that all these shows will be taper friendly, and it's possible that SBD patches will be available. Please e-mail me if you can help. Many boards have a pair of RCA "tape" output jacks that would probably be at the right levels. If they only have XLR outputs, then you would need an attenuator of some kind. A pi-network is a fairly easy to build setup that will work well for this. I built one for my Pro DAT deck as it would overload the pre-amp on my consumer amplifier. Best dang A/D for CD that you'll find. For DAT transfers, any bit-perfect (1-1 bitcopy) digital Audiocard and decent CD burner will do very nicely. Don't forget to burn "Disk At Once" (DAO). The HHb will burn CD-r(computer media) and CD-RW. It is slower and not redbook compliant. Try an EAC extraction to see what I mean. It does make a great sounding disk, and controls SCMS. It is easier for those who aren't computer propellerheads. :-) ==snip== I have an M1 and an HHb 830. If I copy a DAT to CD, and then copy the CD back to DAT using the digital connections of my RM-D100K, is this considered a true DAT clone, or not? I also got your other suggestions (etree.org). I did also find cdrfaq.org which is *very* useful too. One more question if anyone knows: If I play and then try to record an MD through the digital (coax or optical) interface into a standalone CD burner, will SCMS get in the way? I'm thinking not, because ATRAC will prevent me from getting a bit-accurate copy of the original source anyway. But I don't know for sure. From: Ron Cobb <rcobb@channel1.com> Subject: FS: Fostex D-5 and one-pass dat tapes Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 23:08:34 -0500 I have a Fostex D-5 with low hours if anyone is looking for one. This unit is one of the early ones that I just didn't use much (about 100 tapes recorded on it). Comes with original box, original manual, and remote control. Professionally cleaned/aligned in the last year and not used since then. Please email for more details. Only problems are a "scratchy" headphone volume control and L/R balance does not appear to work on playback/listening. Both probably resulted from it not being used enough, so give it a good home and put it to work! $275 plus shipping I also have about 100 dat tapes that were used once. About half are audio-grade (120min) and half are data-grade (60m & 90m). $1.50 per tape. Preference for someone to buy the whole lot. thanks, ron

Just had the drum assembly, heads, capstan, pinch roller, guide posts cleaned. The alignment was checked and the block error rates tested too. Given a clean bill of health by Sonic Sense 6/29/01 (documented if needed). Has not been used since, but once or twice. Looking for at least $500. All documentation, boxes and accessories are here too. It is in mint cosmetic shape as well! Will consider selling the 7 pin RK-DA10 with it for the right price. The cable is not included with the price above. Don't ask for just the 7-pin please. Any offers welcome...but no low ballers please. From: BabyPrite@webtv.net (Jonathan Lerman) Subject: Quick Trade For SCI Show Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 00:20:08 -0500 (EST) I would love to set up a quick swap, for which I would be very grateful, for SCI's Warfield-3-10-01 DSBD on DAT featuring Bob Weir+Vince Welnick. I have it on CDR, but would like the DAT for a friend, who does not currently have access to CD equipment at home. I'm sure the DAT is "out there" since I have seen this show on many lists. I have some great tapes with which I can reciprocate: SCI, ABB, GD, Pink Floyd, JGB, Ratdog, and much more. Thanks in advance, Jon

As I was looking for a home deck, I've been offered with a choice between a 2nd hand FOSTEX D5 or a 2nd hand TASCAM DA30MKII. The price difference is quite consistent : about 500$ for the Fostex and about 840$ for the Tascam. The only info that I have until now is that the Tascam was mainly used in home and have a low mileage on it (any way to check this ?), no idea about the Fostex. I need the help of any owner of these decks with advice on pros/cons of the two machines, what to check to be sure of their status, etc.... I'll visit the shop next tuesday, thanks for any reply arriving before that date. From: Lackofdave@aol.com Subject: thanks for all the roxio help! Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 09:31:12 EST I needed to send this out to the entire list simply because the response to my query was just overwhelming. dozens of very helpful emails later I've successfully fixed the problem, sort of. I downloaded two other recommended programs and they work great. As for roxio i did switch to the disc at once feature and downloaded the whole thing to my hard drive and then made the copy and while it was much less noticeable to my ears you could still hear a tiny glitch. The other two programs i downloaded were EAC and Nero. Which take a little longer but worked flawlessly. So much thanks to everyone. i forgot how friendly and helpful people on this list are. I will be sending out a message to the first few peopel that sent helpful emails but I can't really afford to give out shows to the dozens of people that emailed me. Sorry. but if anyone wants to trade for some Queens of the Stone Age, Jimmy Eat World or Dashboard Confessional drop me a line. Dave lackofdave@aol.com
From: SAlpert5@aol.com Subject: Stiction and DAT tapes Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 09:48:59 EST In DAT-heads 173, Carl Schwink <starfish@pacific-ocean.com> asked about Subject: Dusting off the DATs. while I am not sure what the dust / mold he described is, I can say that even in the absense of that, tape DOES tend to bind over time. This is sometimes referred to as "stiction" More precisely, there are two components here: 1) tape sticking to itself within the tape pack (often cured via fast forwarding and rewinding) and 2) tape sticking to the heads and rollers inside the playback machine. The second problem is the one that more often causes breakage. The first one usually only causes "dropouts", which of course are pretty annoying diginoise in the case of DAT. The reason the "stick" is so strong, is that what is actually happening is that the binder is coming loose off the tape, and oozing out to the rollers in your machine etc. The binder is the sticky glue-like substance that holds the emulstion (magnetic particles) to the mylar (or whatever) film-like ribbon of the tape. You can imagine how strong such glue has to be to prevent the metal particles from falling off the tape. When it starts to degrade, look out! Tapes become history. While I have fortunately not had a problem with DAT's yet, and so I haven't tried this with them, the common rule of thumb to correct this problem is counter-intuitive (at least with other tape formats that this has been an issue with). Believe it or not, the "fix" is to "bake" the tape. I am of course not talking about setting the oven on 300 and whammo! No way, dude, that will melt your music faster than anything! What is the rule of thumb with formats such as reel-to-reel which can also have this problem, is to bake at about 115-125 degrees, no hotter! And bake for about 24-36 hours. The oozing binder will tend to re-formulate and collect where it needs to be, and be dry enough so as not to ooze out upon playback. You may only get one play out of a tape after this process, so be sure to run a clone at that time if necessary! Finally, you may first need to clean your machine's heads and rollers prior to playing these tapes....the previous playbacks with the oozing tape will have left a really bad residue of this binder glue, kind of like "gum" on the guides, which will stick even to "clean" or "baked" tapes. You must clean this crap off first! Good luck!
