From: John Bartol <jbartol@home.com> Subject: Transfer machine for sale Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 10:42:26 -0500 I have a machine here that I need to get rid of and I'm accepting offers before i put it up on ebay. It's a Pentium 3 - 450, 256 MB RAM, 3x27GB HD's, Voodoo 3 3500 TV tuner card w/ svideo, RCA video, RCA (l&r) audio INS/OUTS, a Zefiro Acoustics ZA-2 digital transfer card, 3 Com 10/100, 4x CDR, soundblaster PCI audio. Now, while this box isn't what I'd want to be doing 3D rendering on, it IS perfect for doing transfers from digital audio as well as video. If needed, I can easily add a firewire card for digital video inputs as well. Please email me with a subject line of " PC WANTED " and make me an offer on it. thanks in advance! -jb WOB - Vida Blue 12/31/01 roseland --> section TLM 170 (hyper)) -->AD1K -->D7 for the first three people to respond (and first digester to include the digest #).

From: Clancey <supton@erols.com> Subject: Digital input device suggestions? Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 12:27:54 -0500 My trusty DatPort will not work properly on my new WindowsME machine. I did a search of the database and didn't see any cure for my problem, ie; I can do transfers from 44.1 sources, but cannot switch to 48. I would prefer to keep my DatPort if anyone has found a driver\software that works with ME, but barring that, I need to replace it. I was told about the Midiman Audiophile card, which has a little *too* much on it - I don't need midi input, I am only doing DAT>SHN conversion. Midiman has a simpler card for a bit less money - the DiO 2448 - that would seem to be a better choice for me, but has no d\a for analog. I could just run my cassette player through my DAT deck I suppose, so that's not a real problem, but I would like to know if there are other cards out there that are superior cards out there for my purpose? I found pretty good pricing on these 2 cards at Core-Sound - the Audiophile 2496 at $150 and the 2448 at $105, and that is a pretty comfortable margin for me. Anyone with any advice would be appreciated. Have you had experience with either card, or have a suggestion for another method - is there another DatPort-type USB i\o device I don't know about, for instance - also gratefully appreciation. Of course, if there's someone who has found a way to make the DatPort work properly under Window$ME, I would *really* be a happy camper! Thanks, and please email me off-list with any answers. I'll post anything I think might me useful to the list. take care, Clancey "I Believe We Die Of All The Things We Hate The Most" "I Believe" - Todd Snider My SHN list: http://db.etree.org/clancey

The increments are via tiny dip switches, which aren't exactly easy to maniuplate either. Invariably, you end up with levels either too hot or too soft. If they would change the pots so you had variable L/R gain on the AD, then 5db steps wouldn't be a big deal, and the unit would be a pretty good intro pre/AD combo. As it stands now, it sits at the top of my list of gear I hate. mitch

I am doing some house cleaning and was going to transfer much of this to CDr for a trade. I am looking for the list that came with these that tells what is on what tape. I seem to have lost that. From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@mediaone.net> Subject: Unpacking Tapes - Why Bother? Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 18:53:33 -0500 Hey Now! In all the time that I have been taping and trading, I have never seen any discussion on this topic. I got my M1 from the Oade's who seem to be big fans of unpacking tapes. Back then, I was a unidecker and it seemed like alot to unpack tapes w/ that tiny little deck, so I quit. Fast forward to the time when I said "what the heck" and went into debt to buy an R-300 and an R-500. I still don't unpack tapes. I pop them in and go.... whether it's a master in the M1 or whether I am cloning tapes in the home decks. Never had one single problem. I know that everyone has their preference, but I don't unpack any tapes when I send them out and I have never take any heat for that. Thank God! Also, after somebody sent me 2 reused gnarly looking tapes as a B&P, I ALWAYS note in my B&P offers that the tape needs to be SEALED. I don't want some scummy old tapes in my deck. So what's the big deal w/ unpacking tapes anyway? Doesn't the tape touch the head when you do this? If so, wouldn't that cause undue wear on the head and/or potential shedding of the tape? Anyone had a problem because they did not unpack a tape? What's the point? Got proof? Just seems a bit much to me.......... What do you think? I'd like to know how many tapers /traders out there actually unpack their tapes beforehand. Peace, D
From: Kevin Brown <kevin5brown@yahoo.com> Subject: Pro CD Burner Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 17:47:28 -0800 (PST) I thought I was going to get the consumer Pioneer PDR-609, but turns out I need one without SCMS. Any suggestions? Any reason to *not* get the Tascam CD-RW700? (I have a Tascam DA-40 DAT machine, and really kind of like it.) Any known problems with it, or, any other better value machines out there? HBB is Pioneer, right? But they are kind of hard to find. From: "BB" <usagi@accessus.net> Subject: HELP!!! Repaired tape NO audio Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2002 19:52:40 -0600 I taped a show last night, and I know it taped as I listened to some of it. So, today I had my first ever exciting tape snap. Having read here and on other lists that you can repair tapes with cassette tape repair kits, I went ahead and used some old splicing tape from computer tape reels that we had at my job and did just that. Now, however, there doesn't seem to be anything on the tape. Other tapes play find in my DAT. There is also no A-Time anymore. Any thoughts? I've looked it over multiple times, it doesn't appear to have flipped or anything like that. I just cut a little bit of tape out, spliced the two clean ends, and rolled it back in. usagi@accessus.net http://db.etree.org/bobZemuda (.shn list) AIM: olandbill

Well DAT-heads has been around 11 years, so most things *have* been discussed. In the days of the Panasonic 3500 it was consensus that it was good thing. The empirical data was that error stats on tapes unpacked were lower. It also eliminates all funky errors with absolute time, which in the past would cause Sonys to not play the tape (75ES, 55ES). In more modern decks/tapes the error rates are lower and the decks less fussy. With the panasonic decks it was also thought that the fast fast-forward mode where ABS is not shown meant the tape was lifted off the heads. However, Jim Oade reported that this is false it does touch the head. And for certain, if it is reading ABS time, it is touching the head. Personally, when mastering I: 1) ALWAYS DO A LOAD CHECK (most important thing) 2) If possible do pack the tape 3) I try to leave a minute blank or so If I am making a clone, I am not so fussy. However, I would say there are both benefits and costs to packing the tape. For me the benefits are worth it when mastering. I have had problems in a mastering situation with a unpacked tape on the SV-255. Additionally I have run into tapes the Sony wouldn't play because of weirdness with where the start-ids and absolute time were. The last thing I would note is that in storing tapes there is some advantage to storing them "tail out." If the tape breaks as you put it in the deck... or dries out/oxidizes it will affect the (hopefully blank) tail of the tape. Leaving a minute blank at the beginning of clones is also good for similar reasons, also in early decks and beta PCM errors were definately higher at the beginning. Sean

The theatre holds about 1400. Tickets for that show also go on sale from the box office at 10.00 am Friday 11th Jan, again at priced £32.50
