Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 00:30:24 -0800 Ny first suggestion would be to upgrade your O/S. Windows ME is one of the greatest hoaxes pulled on by Micrsoft to date. IMO, it is a disabled, dowbgraded version of Winows 98 OS/2. I've heard nothing but horror stories about it. I would be removing it from you system and replacing it, and I'D bet more area's of your computer would work beter also. your other options would be good too, but I would still recomend improving the O/S. BTW, I use an Egosys U2A. Keith My trusty DatPort will not work properly on my new WindowsME machine. I did a search of the database and didn't see any cure for my problem, ie; I can do transfers from 44.1 sources, but cannot switch to 48. I would prefer to keep my DatPort if anyone has found a driver\software that works with ME, but barring that, I need to replace it. I was told about the Midiman Audiophile card, which has a little *too* much on it - I don't need midi input, I am only doing DAT>SHN conversion. Midiman has a simpler card for a bit less money - the DiO 2448 - that would seem to be a better choice for me, but has no d\a for analog. I could just run my cassette player through my DAT deck I suppose, so that's not a real problem, but I would like to know if there are other cards out there that are superior cards out there for my purpose? I found pretty good pricing on these 2 cards at Core-Sound - the Audiophile 2496 at $150 and the 2448 at $105, and that is a pretty comfortable margin for me. ------------------------------ From: Logofadog@aol.com Subject: Question and Offer Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 09:52:44 EST Does any one use Quantegy DAT's? I travel between Orlando, FL and Martha's Vineyard, MA so if there are any shows in either of those regions of interest I'll be happy to do what I can to get board access.. I'm pretty good at acquiring press passes for certain gigs but am out of the loop as to how to gain board access so any help will be appreciated from all you gurus out there. I just got a Sony M1 and am looking forward to playing with it in the near future.. a big jump for a guy who used to use Sony reel to reels and Shure mics in the audience on stands...man how times have changed (for the better I might add). Anyone have any Rolling Stones DATS off the soundboard? Would love to acquire one from one of their small club rehearsal venues... Steve Rodgers aka "Lens" ------------------------------ From: "Kevin Hatton" Subject: ?? about motherboards Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 14:49:21 -0500 Hello all, A friend of mine is in the process of building himself a computer with the capability of doing digital in via sound card with digital in. His real question is about motherboards. Apparently, most of the motherboards on the market today (specifically the Ali Magik1, VIA 266A and nvidia chipsets) have built-in sound already with an on-board chip. Is it possible then to disable this chip to use the sound card instead? Does it effect the computer in any way? Is this even an issue? Hopefully someone with a little more experience with this aspect can help us out. Generally, you can disable things like sound in the BIOS setup facility, but it is not always even necessary. There is no reason why 2 sound cards could not be active at the same time. Also, check the specs. A lot of the motherboards I've seen with built-in sound have the popular CMI 8738 chip and include a optical/coax S/PDIF riser. -- Wayne D. You usually want to check the manual too as often such a riser has only S/PDIF out (at least coax) although in some in can be easily added. The Soyo Dragon+ has both in/out. outpost.com is packaging it with a Athlon 1800XP for around $350. A word of warning based on (mildly) painful experience about Outpost.com: They do not accept returns of motherboards or processors, even if they are defective. You are left to deal with the manufacturer. In the case of a defective mobo I bought, the manufacturer (ECS) honors their warranty ONLY if the product was purchased directly from them. Catch 22. Soyo probably is better than ECS in this regard, as well as in quality control, but caveat emptor re: Outpost.com. My Dragon+ arrived today, from Newegg.com. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com ------------------------------ From: Eric Eckberg Subject: FS: Sony D100 Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 13:11:17 -0800 (PST) Looking for a potential buyer for my trusty Sony D100. Just had the drum assembly, heads, capstan, pinch roller, guide posts cleaned. The alignment was checked and the block error rates tested too. Given a clean bill of health by Sonic Sense 6/29/01 (documented if needed). Has not been used since, but once or twice. Looking for at least $500. All documentation, boxes and accessories are here too. It is in mint cosmetic shape as well! Will consider selling the 7 pin RK-DA10 with it for the right price. The cable is not included with the price above. Don't ask for just the 7-pin please. Any offers welcome...but no low ballers please. It is tight and well defined on the bottom-end, albeit not really beefy and robust. The mids and highs are clear and well-defined but could be called a touch sharp across the top. When I compared it directly to a Beyer MV-100 several years ago, I liked the bottom-end definition considerably better and found that it delivered a much more accurate portrayal of the depth and space of the room. Mids and highs sounded natural and we'll defined. For the sake of further comparison, I connected the MV-100 to the ADC-20 (essentially the DMIC-20 without the pre-amp) and despite fairly low levels resulting from the low output capability of the MV-100, I found that the overall sound was fuller, bigger, and richer. From this, I concluded that the MV-100 as a pre-amp is better than the pre-amp section of the DMIC-20, but that for the money, I would prefer to use the DMIC-20. Common complaints about the DMIC-20 are the fact that it only has 5db steps and since the output is digital, it is not possible to balance left/right gain if they are off by a couple/few db. No argument there. However, another common complaint about this issue is that it is hard to decide where to set the gain. Typically, I recommend setting it so that the first couple songs peak at -7 to -4dbfs. You can be confident that within a few songs, the levels will be turned up a bit and you will have very satisfactory levels. Remember, when running a 20-bit converter into a device that is only capturing 16-bits you are, while truncating least significant bits, actually still capturing 16-bits until you are at approximately -18dbfs. While you wouldn't want to record that low, recording at -8dbfs to -4dbfs will not harm sound quality. Making up a few db by turning up your playback system will not compromise your recording. As far as pre-amps in a similar price range to the DMIC-20 are concerned, I still highly recommend the Sound Devices MP-2. We aimed to make it a best deal on the market aside from the good ol' V2, without the hefty pricetag. While there are a couple matters that folks don't always like about the MP-2, I think it sounds quite good and is very user friendly. While it does not provide A/D conversion like the DMIC-20, the quality of pre-amp outweighs having to still use the deck's onboard A/D. Then, later, it is always possible to add an outboard A/D should you still want one. Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 18:13:56 -0800 (PST) I suppose HHB burners are not that hard to find if you get the initials right! (I had "HBB" before...) Many thanks for the people who have emailed me comments on the Tascam. But, brings up another question: Out of the 10-15 people who responded, 3 said to "stay away" from the Tascam CD-RW700 because of "problems." I tried to search the DAT-Heads archive, and didn't really dig up anything. (I thought it was the Yamaha ~700 with all the negative comments...) 2 of those 3 mentioned HHB. (Seems the Tascam at least uses a Sony laser. Saw a sticker on the back of the unit in a hi res photo.) Any detail on the problems of the Tascam would be very much appreciated. So now, I'm comparing the Tascam to the HHB CDR830. Is HHB related to Pioneer somehow? Their Professional Division? (Teac a la Tascam.) For some reason I thought so, but someone else said no. Feature-wise, the Tascam and HHB seem really similar... Thanks! (I seem to be getting the best info from here, vs Audio Asylum, the Tascam web site forum, and home theater forum. FYI!! Linear PCM is linear PCM...) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo!
