From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: re: best price on Maxell DATs Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 20:21:40 -0800 These tapes were *trouble* in 1998-1999-2000. I haven't used any lately (by design), but I do *not* recommend stocking up on these tapes. The Sony DG90P / DG60P seem to be the most reliable tape right now. BUT, their new shell design has the possibility to misload in a D7/D8 (D100/M1 unknown), so making a short test recording, rewinding, and checking that you have A-Time is recommended. (Be certain you are reading A-Time, not R-Time, and you should be guaranteed a recording). The Fuji DATs were also fine last time I used them, but I didn't like their plastic box, which obscured more of the tape and labeling due to "thick edges". --Gary
From: Max Dawson <planc@discobiscuits.com> Subject: DAT Liquidation Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 20:33:26 -0800 Hey there... I'm leaving the country for Australia in a few weeks (really!) and I'm looking to part with the following DAT tapes. Most of these tapes are either Sony, Maxell, or KAO 60's and 90's, I'm only asking $1.25 per tape, so I hope its obvious from the outset that profiteering and/or bootlegging is far from my intention. Rather, I'm just at one of those points in life when a grand purge is in order, and these tapes are first in line to go away from my incredibly cluttered life. Here's how I'd like to do things: I've broken the tapes up into -- groups. Groups won't be broken up unless you can provide me with a compelling reason to do so. Some of the groupings are eclectic, and some are fairly predictable. However, you can count on one thing: all these tapes were recorded on first pass new media and should sound *great.* Perfect for newbies, as they say. If you're interested in any of these bundles, simply email me, making sure to mention the group you're interested in. I'll send you payment info and then ship the tapes out to you via Priority Mail ASAP. Plus, I'll consider special discounts for anyone willing to take more than one group off my hands. Group 1 (8 tapes) Ani DiFranco - 3.8.98 and 7.1.94 (on one tape) Ani DiFranco - 9.19.97 Ani DiFranco - 6.20.98 Ani DiFranco - 5.15.94 Ani DiFranco - 6.5.96 Ani DiFranco - 3.21.98 and 7.8.94 (one one tape) Ani DiFranco - 10.1.98 CSN&Y - 9.13.69 Group 2 (8 tapes) Phish - 8.17.97 (2 tapes) Phish - 11.21.97 Set 2 Only Phish - 12.6.97 Set 2 Only Phish - 8.9.97 Set 2 Only Frank Zappa - 12.10.70 Phil and Phriends (Trey and Page) - 4.17.99 (2 tapes) Group 3 (5 tapes) John Coltrane - 11.1-3.63 (1 tape) Miles Davis - 3.21.60 Miles Davis - 9.29.72 Miles Davis - 10.17.70 Scofield, Medeski, Wood, and Stubblefield - 9.18.98 Group 4 (6 tapes) The New Deal - 3.18.99 The New Deal 1.28.01 The New Deal - 1.29.01 The New Deal - 1.30.01 Sound Tribe Sector 9 - 3.8.00 The Slip - 9.25.98 Set 2 only Group 5 Grateful Dead in 1972 (19 tapes) Includes the following: 4.14.72, 5.3.72, 5.4.72, 5.11.72, 5.16.72, 5.23.72, 8.24.72, 9.21.72 II, 11.19.72, 12.31.72 Group 6 Grateful Dead in the 60's (16 tapes) Includes the following: 1.20.68, 1.22.68, 8.22.68, 2.28.69, 4.5.69, 4.21.69, 4.23.69, 4.26.69, 4.27.69, 6.7.69, 6.13.69, 6.14.69, 7.11.69, 11.08.69, 12.30.69 Group 7 Grateful Dead 1970-71 (11 tapes) Includes the following: 2.1.70, 2.2.70, 5.6.70, 5.15.70b, 8.5.70, 9.18.70, 9.19.70, 9.20.70, 4.8.71, 4.29.71, 11.8.70, 12.14.71 II Sorry for the massive listing, but as I've only got a few weeks left stateside, I'm quite motivated to pass these tapes on to new homes. If anyone would be gracious enough to help me out and provide = me with some tracks, entire concerts not needed necessarily, I would be = very grateful. =20 I'm also looking to do some comparisons between preamps. If anyone has = tapes made with a Sonosax, SD's Mp2, or another stealthy preamp, I'd = love to hear it. Tapes made with mbho's are a plus as well. I'd be glad to offer up shows in return from my list. Mostly Smashing = pumpkins but there are other goodies on there from lots of different = types of bands. SHN's only however. I don't think I have enough time = to deal with mail trades w/ school starting :-( Thanks Zach

From: DAVEDARC@aol.com Subject: LP to CD advicve Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 08:35:26 EST HEy folks, Not knowing much about this as I have a stand alone burner.......What is the best device and software to be able to run a turntable through your computer, record as wave file, then spit out to cd. I would need the card with the RCA jacks, and the software to edit any glitches, and to actually "record", etc. Any advise off line would be greatly appreciated. I know most of this type of capture and record is done for DATS, so I thought you guys would be the experts on this. Thank you kindly, Dave

Reply-to: idocmark@buffnet.net Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 11:06:26 est5edt A friend of mine has been offered SBD access for one of his favorite bands next show. I was wondering if someone could tell me what type of cable are needed and any other important info. Would they require regular RCA plugs to mini or XLR (male or female?) to mini? Or does this depend of the band's setup. Also what about levels. Will there be any problem with them being to hot or not high enough. If so what do you do about that? Guitar Center seems to have imported the entire factory and the gnomes who build 'em, as they're everwhere... ;) The truly sad thing is that they're fragile, moisture and wind sensitive, and don't hold up in even gentle use in the clubs... I'm the process of either selling my DAW in its entirety or parting it out(Dell Optiplex Gxa, PII 233, 96mb ram, 15gb Maxtor HD, Zefiro ZA2, 2mb Ati Rage video, Panasonic based CDR reader 24x (rips audio, Memorex CDRW 2x,2x,8x burner). I have burnt many a CD, very few coasters. Has registered copies of Soundforge XP (came with the zefiro) and CDRWIN (I paid for a copy) installed along with a clean Win98SE install with no other crap installed. Have been using this setup for about 3 years. HD is 1.5 years old, CDR is 3 years old. If anyone is interested, let me know. I will sell the Zefiro by itself if desired. It is an ISO card. Have all documentation and cables as well as latest drivers. This is a plug and play box, just needs a keyboard, mouse and a monitor. Guaranteed not to be DOA. $400 . ZA2 alone is $150 I'm looking to move to a laptop based configuration. Can anyone recommed a quality USB based digital audio I/O? I know Opcode was one of the first years ago, are they still around? I saw Edirol on the Musicians Friend site.. any good? I'm trying to keep the cost below $200 and prefer Coax at minimum (cannot use a Optical only solution). From: Magnus Berglund <magnus.berglund@karlstad.bonet.se> Subject: Sony SBM-1 and Denecke/Zefiro AD-20 Inbox Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 23:27:15 +0100 Hi all, I have some questions on Sony SBM-1 and Denecke/Zefiro AD-20 Inbox. (For a background on my needs, see the end of this mailing) - Any idea of the noice level of the pre-amp in SBM-1? - Same question for the Denecke AD-20. - Today, I have an old Sony TCD-D3. Has anyone got some figures on the noice level for its pre-amp (just for comparison...)? - Is the pre-amp of SBM-1 the same as in the new DAT-recorders TCD-D100 and PCM-M1 ? - Is the A/D-converter of SBM-1 the same as in TCD-D100 and PCM-M1 ? - If "yes" on the previous questions, are there any arguments left using an SBM-1 together with a TCD-D100/PCM-M1 ? - Generally, how do SBM-1 and Denecke AD-20 compare to each other? - I am a bit worried about SCMS. Using an external A/D-converter means that my original is a digital recording. Does this make digital copying impossible? (in my case from a TCD-D3 to a PC sound card) - What SCMS code does the SBM-1 produce? - Same question for AD-20. - Any other issues to consider with SCMS? - My mic is a stereo-mic with a single XLR-connector where L, R and ground are mapped on the three pins. Any problems to wire a cable which adapts this to the dual balanced XLR-connectors of the AD-20 if I go for that alternative? - - - MY BACKGROUND (skip if you are not interested...) I have used a Sony TCD-D3 together with a Sennheiser MKE 66 stereo-mic occasionally (actually very seldom...) during a 10 years time for live recordings, mainly church organ music since I play the organ myself. Lately, I have started to make recordings more frequently, but I suffer from some problems with my equipment: - It is quite noicy - The TCD-D3 is sometimes malfunctioning mechanically - Sometimes poor contact on the mic input connector - The battery pack has passed away several years ago (which is less of a problem for me since I often record in churches where there are power outlets) So, I am considering upgrading my equipment, but I would like to go for a step-wise approach. My idea is to start with a mic pre-amp and/or A/D-converter and later on (when the TCD-D3 is completely dead...) replace the DAT-recorder. I guess the Sony SBM-1 or perhaps the Denecke/Zefiro AD-20 would be a natural start. (A problem with the AD-20 from my perspective is that I have not been able to find a dealer here in Sweden. International orders are always a bit risky concerning support, etc...) But if it turns out that the SBM-1 (or AD-20) will become useless when I upgrade my DAT-recorder, then I might consider to go for a new DAT-recorder directly instead of throwing away my money. To copy my recordings to CDs, I have so far used the analogue output from TCD-D3, feeded it to my PC (trough a Soundblaster Live card), then edited the recordings and burned the CD. It appears that I will need an interface box, the RM-D100K, in order to connect my TCD-D3 digitally to my sound card (or are there any simpler adapters?). I may invest in this as well, but I like to clear out all SCMS issues first. - - - /Magnus Berglund, Sweden
