Reply-To: <tim@showtimeskis.com> Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 11:38:15 -0500 For sale- Sony D8 around 250 hours on the heads. About 1/2 60m tapes 1/2 90m tapes. Used only as a record deck in the field that was always hooked to my sbm1 so the jacks have no wear. I have an extra battery for (6v 12ah) it that i will give you, but no extra charger. I would like to get 325 for the deck and battery. I need payment by Jan 24. Also- 18v Battery that will run 2 stewart boxes for a long time. If you run earthworks or any other high current draw mic with the stewarts this will save you money on 9v batterys. Comes with charger and all necesary cables to get everything done. 85.00 battery for both boxes, cables, and charger. thanks for the bandwith. Tim

From: "Dan Witt" <Warren_Oates@msn.com> Subject: FS: pair of MBHO 603's with cardioid capsules Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 10:57:05 -0600 These mics are sensitive enough to go line in without a preamp, for rock show recording. I'll throw in a pair of light duty wind screens and AT shockmounts. Excellent condition. Asking 1000.00 or best offer. Email me if interested. Dan Witt
From: Klay Anderson <klay@klay.com> Subject: 3800 & R500; Custom Cables Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 10:00:49 -0700 "Jason S. Fitz" <jsfitz@acedsl.com> Subject: Panasonic SV-3800 vs. Sony PCM-R500 Asked: > I have read all of the specifications and have experience with the SV-3800 - I > think it sounds great overall, but I'm wondering if Sony's 4 drive motor > improves tape handling and if the SBM 20-bit sound is better > The 3800 has been discontinued as of a few years ago, as have all Panasonic decks and pretty much the whole dreadful Ramsa line as well. The 500 is still very viable and the 4 motors will treat your tapes nicer. The SBM is a useful feature in the analog mode. Note that you may not hear much difference recording Phish at 10 vs., say, classical music. SBM really shines in low-level stuff like reverb tails and ambience. Additionally: > Also, where could I get a cable 5-pin XLRF (balanced) to mini-stereo male > (unbalanced) - are there any issues with going from balanced to unbalanced > like that? Order the cable from us; we make some of the best in virtually any length. There is no problem in the wiring conversion as long as it is done correctly. Note that aside from a slightly smoother high end response specification-wise on the more expensive mic, the AT822 & AT825 are virtually identical. Thanks! -- Regards, Klay Anderson, D.A.,Q.B.E. From: Steven Kingsley <eskay@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Woody & Money... Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 13:09:21 -0500 Haven't said Boo in a while, so Happy New year to all of you. While I acknowledge that there is good intention behind the fund & Boca Bob, I agree with Jeff Frank. Mixing the music & the money strikes a weird chord with me. Might be like opening a large can of worms, thinking it was a can of something really cool. Do what you wish & what you feel is right, but personally I would ask permission from the artist. If they are less that thrilled about it, who knows what could take place. Just my 2 cents. Steve

From: L Sean Kennedy <liam@fedney.org> Subject: Re: Woody & Money... Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 14:13:16 -0500 Hi, Since there are two current threads about DATs and money, I feel a need to weigh in. Unfortunately this is long, but perhaps the perspective is different. A essential point is that DAT-heads is completely uncensored, so anything posted by someone who can send plain text and subscribe to the digest or dat-heads-post will get there. However, some activities are frowned upon. The membership serves as our early-warning system and is apparently effective. Fundraising for a charity cause is not something that is cut and dry. I do not personally feel there is anything directly wrong with what Bob Silva is doing. In fact its admirable in concept, but perhaps less well communicated. After watching local public television hit up DEADHEAD charity (with GD blessing) for years w/o providing follow-on programming outside of pledge drives, this is far more admirable as it is supporting the kin of someone we have benefited from. Structured correctly, it is probably something that Phil would support. Were Bob or someone to consider this again, a better way to communicate it would be to mention that you personally are raising money for a cause, specify a total pledge goal, and offer to reward those contributing to that charity a with DATs/CDs. Discussion of individual pledges or requested donation should be done in private email. Offer that when the pledge goal is reached, you will provide the seed for a tree. Communications should be succinct and direct. Especially responses to those who challenge your goals -- either private responses, or very to the point (quoting leads to flames here). Ask the charity for a confirmation that they received the donation and post that on the web. Individual donor addresses and amounts should also be provided to the charity so the donors can properly claim the donation on their taxes. Even with such an effort there it may still provoke some sentiment against your efforts that you must counter rationally. There is still the possibility that you may run afoul of some band or the RIAA. If you still want to raise money for charity on DAT- heads, I will not object unless it becomes a frequent distraction or is no longer grass-roots (ie greenpeace itself), but others may and have a right to be heard without taking it as a personal attack. Anyway, all opinions are welcome, but I wanted to add some contrast to the discussion about Bob's offer. I do applaud his effort and hope those participating are satisfied. I do hope that Bob will provide us with a succint follow up when the donations are submitted to the foundation. Perhaps a different tactic than "drastic moves" can be used next time as that clearly ran afoul of some sentiment on DAT-heads. ====== People do sell their collections on DAT-heads. There has been some discussion and consensus on this. This should be somewhat infrequent, should never be for more than the current cost of blanks (and generally less with perhaps the recipient paying shipping). I do not think anyone has broken this code, but unless you are liquidating your collection I suggest you offer up small numbers of shows only for "blanks and postage." DAT for CDR exchange should add up hourwise, not costwise (seems to be consensus). Please do not list up collections on EBay and announce them here or I will personally flame you. Sean

From: "kip martin" <onefourfive@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Woody & Money... Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 14:52:19 -0500 hi >People do sell their collections on DAT-heads. as a member of a couple bands who have been taped and traded somewhat frequently, i object to this practice. strenuously. if selling involves cash without artist knowledge, it sucks. i support and encourage taping at my performances, but ANY income resulting from our performances (venue profits, consessions, management fees, etc.) should be rooted in an agreement with the band, and NOT done without artist consent. i have heard folks voice the "once its in the air its the peoples' property" thing, but i just disagree. most bluegrass musicians i know--even in touring bands--live on less money than most. selling something i made (our performance of our material) for crass material gain doesnt take money out of my pocket necessarily, but if money is to be made on our performance, dont you think we should gain from it also? if you dont, youre worse than the record companies. >selling [of shows] should never be for more than the current cost of blanks >(and generally less with perhaps the recipient paying shipping). agreed. >Please do not list up collections on EBay and announce them here or I will >personally flame >you and you'll probably get bagged. thats my rant for the day. kip martin bassist w/ mike auldridge _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
From: L Sean Kennedy <liam@fedney.org> Subject: Re: Woody & Money... Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 15:42:00 -0500 As there is so much to agree with in Kip's message, I have specifically asked him to clarify a few areas of his comments to the list and am trying to set him up in this message. I would like to focus only on the reimbursment of cost of the media in a collection and whether he objects to that. Rough consensus on DAT-heads tends to favor such exchanges when someone absolutely must get rid of their collection over just throwing it away (B&P strongly preferred). It is not an area free of debate, but I know of nobody ever going beyond media costs*. The concerns of a musician about tapers profiting from them are absolutely valid, but such profiting is not tolerated at all on DAT-heads and that discussion obscures Kip's critique on how we do things. It is an important opinion and should be clarified. * The current charity issue not withstanding which is a different complex ball of wax. I would welcome Kip's comments on my personal advice that I have offered for debate. Those are the cases where someone is offering to give a present to someone who makes a donation to a charity with personal meaing. This is presumably coming *at* expense to the person posting and I suggested that no specific mention of money aside from your goal be made to the list. Hopefully the person donating is doing so because they share your interest in that charity, not just for the music. Its this sense of exchange which is the specific flaw of Bob's offer. Thanks, Sean

From: "kip martin" <onefourfive@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: cash for DATs Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 17:13:05 -0500 hi again let me first state unequivocably that i believe tape trading is a GOOD THING. with that in mind... >I would like to focus only on the reimbursment of cost of the media in a >collection and whether he objects to that. when a person has 50 shows on DAT and then moves them over to CDR, should he be 'reimbursed' for the media? the transfer of monetary funds bothers me, personally. for several reasons: first of all, if someone like tim obrien (who also peruses these lists) saw his tapes for sale for ANY reason, i know he would hit the ceiling and maybe pull the plug. so, your attempt to recoup media costs may end up damaging the taper scene. ron mccoury is 'officially' against taping but turns his head and apparently doesnt see booms and guys with headphones in the AUD or at the SBD. he has been known to check out bluegrassbox.com, and nashphil's great sites. and since he collects DATs, he (or DMB's people, for that matter) could easily venture over to dat-heads. hope no one is 'recouping media costs' if he's checking out the list. secondly, you have to ask: would that person buy that 'used' media if it were blank? probably not. reformatted (wiped)? probably not. how much is a used DAT of indeterminate age and wear worth? lets be clear: people are buying the music. simple as that. NOTE: i know theres a huge market for used CDs that are bought and sold with no remuneration to the artists. i find that less than ethical, too. trading, in my book is a much better, more ethical practice. and finally, the industry is at wits end with us digital domain trader types and they absolutely check on ebay, peer-to-peer networks, etc for copyright violators. i think the spector of cash trading hands here would be an overly-complex pill for the music industry weasels to swallow. i can envision sony having an injunction slapped on a list. we used to think napster was going to get away with it (i supported napster), and then when they got bagged, i figured that bearshare, audioquest, etc would be immune. but now they are starting to feel the heat, too. so, the questio is: how long before a record company, the RIAA, or even DMB's folks crack down on things? i believe VERY strongly in dat-heads and its offspring and cousins (JAMGRASS, EAC list, ShadyGrove, SHN-BIN, etc.). i also subscribe to the 'dark side' (BOOTLEGLIST, BOOTLEG-MD, TAPER-UNFRIENDLY, etc), and as long as they dont exchange money, they will probably be able to stay under the radar. personally, i subscribe to them all. >Rough consensus on DAT-heads tends to favor such exchanges when someone >absolutely must get rid of their collection over just throwing it away (B&P >strongly preferred). B&P is MUCH prefered by this musician and fellow tape/CDR taper. SUMMARY: these trades should be handled like ALL ethical trades: either by music trade or B&P. asking for money is wrong, and its also asking for trouble. CAVEAT: im open minded. so dont anyone fly off the handle and flame me as if im a copyright nazi. i consider it an honor to be taped. when i see someone taping my show, i know my performance will reach beyond the walls of the concert venue. thanks kip martin _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

Me, too, but what about this trick: 1. Somebody has a lot of dats he wants to get rid of, so he offers them for b&p. He keeps the new dats he receives, and ships off his dats. No problem, right? 2. He now has a bunch of new, blank dats, which he sells. No problem, right? Seth
