I only find that unethical if the seller made a copy to keep for themselves.
Otherwise, it's ethically no different then selling a book.
That said, I always try to buy new CDs when they're available. If the artists
can't make money, there won't be any music.

Seth has a good point, but if the same person kept "trading away" his DAT
collection, people would probably catch on.
A true story: I belonged to a CDR list for a while where one guy offered to
trade CDRs from his collection for commercial cds. I knew he was going to
turn around and sell them, but I figured I would outsmart him and send him
a bunch of cds I had amassed that were less than saleable, ie cutouts and
promo disks - I even sent the guy a list of the cds (beforehand) . After
he got them, and talked to a "friend" he had the nerve to flame me for
sending him cds he couldn't sell... I got a kick out of that! I'll never
even support a seller to *that* degree again, though.
There are always people looking for a way to scam money. We just have to
try and foil them by spreading the music for free, and policing our own.
Education is the key.
BTW - Kip, are you and Mike playing at The State Theatre (
http://www.thestatetheatre.com/ )in Falls Church, VA tomorrow night
(1/17/02) at your *free* Bluegrass show (doors open at 6:00pm, show
starting at 7:30pm)? I am gonna try and make it this time!
Take care!

Howdy everyone...
I think I'm gonna upgrade my rig so I'd like to get rid of some gear.
I thought I would check here first before I head over to Ebay (or waste
more BW on countless other lists). I have an Audio Buddy mic preamp
and a Flying Calf A/D converter, both made by Midiman. These two guys are a
GREAT combo for someone that doesn't want to spend $1000's on taping gear
but also doesn't want to compromise quality. Read all about them here:
Audio Buddy - http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/audibudy.php
Flying Calf - http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~concuss/midiman/calfad.htm
I bought each item brand new about 10 months ago...I still have all the
original boxes and manuals. The Audio Buddy was $95 and the Flying Calf was
$175. My Audio Buddy is different than the one above, the insides are the
same, it's just doesn't have that sleek aluminum look....it's the same color
as the Flying Calf. Do your own research, you won't find anything but good
reviews of both these
products. The biggest issue is power...which I solved by buying a battery
pack with an AC/DC converter built right into it for $30. It's called a
Pocket Generator and there are 10 of them on Ebay right now. It's a pretty
neat little toy. I'd like to sell both of them at once, make me an offer.
All offers will be considered. Get yourself a pair of Oktava mics from
Guitar Center for $200 (which I did before I bought a matched pair and
had absolutely NO problems with them...excellent mics. take it from
someone that actually BOUGHT a pair from Guitar Center, not from
someone that "heard" they suck. they now have a happy new owner)
and you will have yourself a VERY decent recording rig. Thanks...

According to "The Deadhead's Taping Compendium" (volume 3), or my
interpretation thereof, there are un-cut sbds. of set 1 of this amazing
show. It was also broadcast on the GDH (# 154-156) I would be grateful
for a copy on DAT or CDR of either source of the first set. Much to
trade including a clean DSBD of set # 2.

An Added Thought to the Fray:
I agree with Kip Martin 110%
Money involved in a trade violates our "unofficial"
ethical standards.
B&P blanks should be burned and returned.
Trades should be of equivalent media.
The music MUST remain priceless.
That means no value added nor given up.
This music is a "gift from the musicians" to
their fans.
It would be sullied by any attempts
to place a lesser value on it than the
unique and priceless mutual respect and caring
that is shared by the makers of music and the
enjoyers of it.
I also believe in supporting the muscians that we
trade by buying their commercial materiel as well.
-Bob

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about replacing my Sound Professional's cardioids by something
with a nicer sound. I need stealth cardioids, but unfortunately, I can't
afford the hefty bill that Schoeps or Neumans would inflict on my wallet.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a '$1000 or less' set of mikes?
I came across the shure WL51 cards:
http://www.shure.com/microphones/models/wl51.asp
Wow - those shure WL51 cards look impressive - the price isn't too
nasty either. Anyone have any experience with them? Anyone know where
I could buy them in Europe?
Does anyone have any recordings made with these shure WL51 cards? I
have many recordings I could exchange.
Stupid question - don't you think they look (cosmetically) like the
DPA 406X's...The day DPA comes out with miniature cards like the
4061's I will be a happy man...
Cheers,

Anyone out there using this puppy for recording? It seems to offer
most features tapers want: with the exception of no digital pass
through during recording, no digital in, high media cost (one time
cost for large PC card, if you dump down to CDr after each show),
48kHz PCM uncompressed (no 44.1). Solid state! Has phantom power,
blah, blah, blah. Smells like the future.

There are no scratches or dents, looks like new. I would like to get $350

Me, too, but what about this trick:
1. Somebody has a lot of dats he wants to get rid of, so he offers
them for b&p. He keeps the new dats he receives, and ships off his
dats. No problem, right?
2. He now has a bunch of new, blank dats, which he sells. No problem,
right?
Seth
===================================
This is exactly what I was thinking. In regards to Kip's query, used DAT
tapes do have a value, say about 60 cents apeice (check Ebay listings, but
used DAT/DDS tapes are sold quite frequently). New DAT tapes can be had for
about $2 each, so even doing things as Seth suggests would result in a
financial gain for the tape liquidator which given what Kip is saying would
rub many artists the wrong way. That is, if the liquidator just sold the
tapes as used DAT tapes (w/o music) on Ebay, he'd get about 60 cents each.
If instead, he took B+Ps for his collection and then sold the new tapes for
probably close to $2 each, he'd show a profit relative the true value of
used tape stock.
Getting back to Seth's question: "No problem, right?" Well, as I've just
described, strictly speaking, we could say there is a problem, in that the
liquidator could still be viewed as profiting from the music, depending on
how you define things. And though I find the music taping and trading to be
a great hobby, Seth's method above does lead to other concerns, which get
into my profession--I try to find ways to reduce transportation-related
greenhouse gas emissions that can lead to global warming. This is
incredibly minor granted, but in this instance we might be trading off the
ethics of protecting artists to the ethics of protecting the environment.
Perhaps I should explain. If person C wants new tapes, he can order from a
variety of online vendors and they will be shipped to him. In the case Seth
poses above, person A liquidates his tape collection to person B. Person B
orders tapes from an online vendor and has them shipped to himself. He then
ships the tapes to Person A, who offers for sale on DAT-Heads a bunch of new
DAT tapes for something like $2 apeice. Person C says sounds cool, pays
person A, and then Person A ships them to person C. Seems cool from the no
money for DATs side of things, but we've just had three times as much
shipping of DAT tapes than if person C had just ordered them directly.
Three times as much energy used, three times as much greenhouse gas
emissions (less the much smaller emissions of just sending a check to buy
the collection for the cost of the media I guess, but shipping a letter uses
way less energy of shipping a box of tapes).
It seems to me that Seth's method in any real terms is just semantics in
regards to protecting the artist. The tape liquidator makes no more profit
from "selling" the tapes directly than he would doing a B+P and then selling
the fresh tapes. There are real world environmental consquences, albeit
quite small. But when it comes to the enviroment, reducing demand is what
it is all about--carpooling, trip chaining, etc. From an environmental
perspective, it would be nice to avoid the scenario Seth describes and just
turn a blind eye to cost of media liquidations.
Of course, the bigger problem still remains of keeping artists happy with
our hobby of taping live performances. It just strikes me as too bad that
the environment must take a hit so that we can play what to me seem like
semantical games.
My two cents,
Todd

Actually used CDs are a real scam for some people in the
recording industry. In my experience up to 90% of the stock
in a used record store selling current CDs are promotional
copies. Someone associated with the music industry
received those for free and sold them for something, usually
in bulk. Heck, the artist may even be charged for "promotion"
of their album against future revenues.

"
Less than ethical would be the artist getting paid everytime a work he had
sold changed hands. Sort of like Ford getting paid everytime someone sold
their used car to someone else.
Besides, if I buy a new CD for $16, and then sell it used for $8, where is
the profit? Should I be forced to sell that back to the artist? I just took
an $8 loss. I'll be happy to share the loss with the artist.
Artists very much would desire a pay per listen business model. Its not
going to happen, the genie has been out of the bottle since day 1 in this
business, and I don't think consumers are going to allow that to change.
Besides, as most everyone knows, the only people that make any worthwhile
money in the music industry are the record labels, and the huge acts, like
Mariah Carey or Metallica, or name any band on MTV regularly. Any artist
that actually works for a living, makes his money by getting paid for live
performances and any associated merchandise.
So if you really want to support your favorite arist, go see them on the
road. That will impact their wallet alot more than the $.25 they get from
the record company for the $16 CD you just bought.
