Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 14:17:39 -0600 Hi there, I'm wearing a fire suit now (ZZZip) so feel free to flame me publicly. I think that if someone wants to B+P a concert from me 'cause they have nothing to trade, then I'd rather they just give me a buck or two, and I'll mail them 2 cd's. I'd rather risk violating a stupid law (copyright law is practically unenforceable at the small-change level I'm discussing) than have someone waste the postage and resources to MAIL BLANK CD's. I say, screw the non-existant copyright cops, I'm not hurting anyone, and I'm conserving resources. If you look at how much reimbursement I get, it is still less than the "suggested retail" for the blank media. Along those lines, if I want to sell someone all my DAT's for $6.00 per audio grade and $3.00 for DDS, and they want to buy them, WHO CARES that the lowball quantity deep-discounted DAT-HEADS price is $2.00, there are still retail stores selling these tapes for $15.99 for a TWO-PACK. so flame me if you will, but I like to keep things simple. Also, where do I draw the line if I am a sound engineer for a band, and I record my shows, then provide the service of running off copies for folks who want them? The band does not object if I actually have enough $$ to buy some blank CD's to make copies for them, and why would they care if I make $8.00 running my protools computer for a day-and-a-half so some heads are happy??? answer me that all you copyright-defenders !! -tom ps- the arr eye ay ay sux!!! Big money for big artists, NO money for small artists and a super-powerful industry lobby to make us believe that it's for the best COPYWRONG!!!!! PPS Amen Todd From: "Todd Ramsden" (BIg snip) Of course, the bigger problem still remains of keeping artists happy with our hobby of taping live performances. It just strikes me as too bad that the environment must take a hit so that we can play what to me seem like semantical games. My two cents, Todd -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ From: mboden1579 Subject: Denecke PS-1 & AD-20 for sale Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 12:17:57 -0800 I am upgrading my pre-amp and converter, and have decided to sell my current setup. The Denecke PS-1 is the 48v phantom power supply for the mics and the Denecke AD-20 is a pre-amp and 20 bit converter(this latter box used to be known as the Zefiro until the name was changed). Anyway, I have these two units attached together with velcro, because I always used them together. It just seemed to make sense to leave them attached with the PS-1 always plugged into the AD-20. In the beginning, I powered these two boxes with 9-volt batteries, but I since changed to powering them with a 12-volt battery and a special cable that I had made. (I may be so inclined as to include this cable with the purchase.) So...the prices I paid (including tax) for the items when they were new were the following: PS-1: $156.50 AD-20: $318.60 At this point, I'd obviously like to get the most out of this as I can. So...if you're interested, please make an offer and I'll take the highest bidder. I'm thinking I'd like to get at least $300 for both. That's a pretty bad bass rolloff (-5dB @ 150 Hz, -10 dB @ 50 Hz), they're gonna sound thin. You didn't say which Sound Professionals cardiods you have, but each of the different SP models (AT853, AT933, Shure MX100) look to have better bass response. -Jeff Lester ------------------------------ From: Len Moskowitz Subject: Re: shure WL51 cards Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 16:13:11 -0500 (EST) "Alisdair Menzies" wrote: > Wow - those shure WL51 cards look impressive - the price isn't too > nasty either. Anyone have any experience with them? ... They have a severe bass roll-off, a pronounced high frequency peak, and relatively high self noise. Like all cardioids, they are very sensitive to handling noise and to wind. Small cardioids are particularly hard to aim correctly; when not aimed correctly you end up with the crummy off-axis frequency response that all cardioids have. Also, since cardioids are vented and have to "breathe" freely, you can't bury them in clothes or "croakies" without dramatically changing their frequency response. We recommend omnis over cardioids in almost all situations except for when you are recording at a distance in a very large hall, or when you are right on top of a sound source and there's a trememdous amount of noise behind you. > ...The day DPA comes out with miniature cards like the 4061's I will > be a happy man... Since DPA makes microphones that are world-class performers, it's unlikely that they will introduce a miniature cardioid -- the two characteristics don't go well together. Since FULL SAIL is located here I'd imagine there are quite a few knowledgeable folks who wouldn't mind giving me a bit of tutelage since I'm new to a lot of this fancy mic placement nomenclature and I tend learn a lot quicker when someone shows me something rather than trying to decipher the written word. Anyhow, would love to expand my horizons a bit and am looking forward to taping my first show on DAT... there's just some kind of a high that I get when the VU meters get pulsating and I've been a recording freak since I was a kid...can't wait to really get some awesome recordings on DAT...so if there's anyone out ther local who would like to share their wealth of knowledge on this subject I'm ready to listen. People, though, completely missed Kip's concern on this point -- that artists music is sold without any renumeration. He was off topic and this is even more off topic now. I would like to get this back on topic. I think the question we want to discuss is whether people who need to liquidate their collections should do so on DAT-heads. People may need to do this for various reasons such as tax bills or job loss. People may do it because they have changed media types. I think few people are fully warm and fuzzy about it, but it is something we watched occur without objection when the per-tape cost was less than it would cost someone to by the media to make a copy of the same collection. My opinion is that absolutely offering up a few shows on DAT-heads should just be B&P. Its simple its basic, if you come to some different arrangement in private mail or at a show that is your deal. With the collection issue I think just ignoring the reality makes it occur by more nefarious or in forums where there is not a informed community watching. But Kip has some valid concerns and I feel this topic is ripe for debate. Sean ------------------------------ From: Jeff Anderson Subject: Yonder (Austin) Tonight! I was wondering if anyone here knows if the SCMS can be disabled, and if so how? Also I've heard that with a service remote I can access an error count and how many hours are on the head? Is this true? Anyone know if the remote that comes with it can be modified to do this too? Or anyone have a service remote for sale if it does do this? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I settled on a Stewart BPS-1 (used, $65), which came in the mail today. I hooked it up to my Sony PCM-M1 / Neumann TLM-103 setup, and it works great! When I bought the microphone a couple of months ago, the salesman kept raving about it, saying "you're gonna love this mike", and so on, but when I hooked it up with the 9V phantom power box the salesman also (mistakenly) sold me, I wasn't too impressed; I couldn't get the levels nearly high enough, and even when I got relatively close, the sound still wasn't that great. Now that I've got the full 48 volts of power the mic requires, I can really appreciate the sound of it, and finally, I feel the $750 I spent on this mic (used) was worth it. I'm sure a lot of you probably have far better microphones, but as far as I'm concerned, this mic sounds great, and has far exceeded my expectations. Anyway, thanks again for the phantom-power box recommendations... I have about 300 DAT's I've bought over the last few years when DAT prices ranged from 3.30 to the 2 bucks they are now. I'm in the process of converting them to CD, and would have no use for 300 blanks coming back to me, as I can't trade DAT (I sold my M1) and only have a DA20MKII for playback. I would do some B&P's and bought a laptop to maybe start laptop recording. My question: What would be wrong with selling those DAT's for 2 bucks a piece? I probably paid over 1000 dollars for those DAT's. Not to mention the envelopes and stamps for those B&P's and trades I've done. I could hear the collective groan when I would walk in my local post office because I needed stamps and not a meter strip. The buyer would pay for shipping once, and have an instant collection. So for about 1300 bucks and all the time I've spent on them, where would the profit be if I sell them for 600....
