That's SO cheap for all that it does, and I was about
to buy a used AD1000 from a friend - SO glad I waited.
And, Will...so much for the AD2K - WAY over-priced one trick

Well the Sound Devices USBPre has better specs, so until we hear this Apogee

I don't know about that. It's got an updated mic pre which they claim is
better than the AD1K's. (It isn't hard to imagine; the AD1K's design is
old now.) It's got a higher-resolution ADC with the same UV22 conversion
to 16-bit which helps the 1K sound the way it does to no small
extent. One could argue that maybe the AD quality itself was sacrificed
for the sake of affordability, but why would Apogee claim the Me's ADC is
superior to the 1K? The lie would be easy to spot, as lesser components
are pretty much an objective measurement.
Perhaps Apogee is planning on selling *many* more of these units than they
did AD1000s. "Anyone planning on setting up a taping rig",
perhaps? We're in the middle of a live-recording "era", it would seem,
with the jamband scene being as big as it is right now. Maybe Apogee is
planning on roping in everyone planning on putting together a top-end
taping rig for *much* less money than is possible today OR upgrading?
Think of this: prior to its announcement, the best you could do to obtain
a top-quality signal chain from mics to DAT/Laptop was to purchase an AD1K
($1500-1600 or so) or an AD2K + "high end" mic pre ($3000 or so!) and a
VXPocket (if you're taping with a laptop) ($600). Now, you get everything
to make tapes with equivalent or better quality for $1395 (even if you
tape with a laptop!) What taper thinking of putting together a 1K- or
2K+-based rig wouldn't jump all over that if the promises hold true?
For that matter, what taper with a "mid-range" rig wouldn't at least *be
considering* upgrading, now that everything's SO MUCH more affordable?
If Apogee deliver on their promises, the Mini-Me has the potential to
truly revolutionize taping. I have a friend who has been taping forever,
but recently gave it up, due to the hassles of the DAT format. He has a
very nice laptop. He is drooling over this thing. Think of how many
former tapers you know that just got sick of the hassle. I have a laptop,
in addition to my DA-P1 and M1. I recently purcahsed an AD-1000, and I
have a high-end microphone preamp. Rest assured, I'm drooling too. Do
you know how much a DA-P1, a PSP-2 and an AD-1000 are worth right now? I
can hold off taping (or patch) for a couple of months between selling them
and buying the Me (as I fear they will soon both start plummeting rapidly
in value. ;)

well, its clearly illegal to ever sell a tape of a live performance without
paying into RIAA, BMI/SCAP, etc. there is no arguement there. its just
illegal to sell music without the owner(s) giving license. i believe its
unethical, but im no ethicist. personally, i DO trade stuff on a 'dont
ask/dont tell' basis frequently. my gripe is NOT trading. hell, i dont even
care if someone stealths a band im playing with who wont give permission to
tape. if i see a big pair of croakies on someones glasses with wires down
his back and a bag on his lap--more power to you!! tape away! but dont tell
my boss--and give me a copy!
its the money thing that bothers me. let me say it again: its THE MONEY
exchanging hands. why? im getting to that...selling them 'for cost' is
suspicious, but you know the difference between selling a show and selling a
tape is.
ive received a couple nasty emails because of my beliefs. being labeled a
'anti-taper', a 'nazi' and a record 'label lackie' is unfortunate. if you
only
knew how hard my label (Rebel Records) is fighting just to stay afloat. youd
realize that all of us arent reeling in big Phish $$. many of the people in
bands traded on this board have day jobs. or living on $15K a year and
looking for a bimbo with a good job and a health plan to marry.

Hi all,
I am looking to sell my Sony D-8 to a good home. I am now asking $375.00 OBO. It has ~30hrs on the heads and is a great machine. I just sent it into Pro Digital and got it serviced for $125.00. You will get a copy of the service order with the machine and well as the original box w/power cord. Pro Digital gave it a clean bill of health and preformed the following services:
Cleaned Heads
Cleaned tape path
Re-aligned heads and tape path
Tightened down all screws
Tested for low error rates in play and record mode
I will pay for FedEx 3-day air shipping. Please e-mail me off the list with any questions. Thanks!

This actually has only marginal DAT content, but I was hoping someone would
have some advice. I use CD Wave Editor for recording web broadcasts to my
hard drive, then transferring to DAT or CDR. Everything was perfect. A few
days ago I readied CDWE for recording a show. Nothing happened. I tried
line input from an external source and it was fine. I then tried to record
to the hard drive using Sound Forge. Nothing happened. I tried deleting
CDWE, then reloading. Nothing. I use ME, and had not had a single problem
with CDWE until now. Any suggestions?
thanks
