OK copyright cop! You want an argument, you got one!
>well, its clearly illegal to ever sell a tape of a live performance without
>paying into RIAA, BMI/SCAP, etc. there is no arguement there.
Clearly?? EVER??? I work for bands, they write their own music,
they pay no money to the RIAA and receive no services. Now YOU TELL
ME what the RIAA is doing that they deserve any cash for my friends'
work!?!
"CLEARLY" the RIAA benefits the artists at the TOP of the pyramid.
Grassroots bands with no published albums and no radio play OWE
NOTHING to the RIAA and I defy you to tell me that they do. The RIAA
wants us all to pay their fees and not question them while they cut
off avenues of public music distribution, and bottleneck the
recording industry through Hillary Rosen's pockets so she can take a
little gold from all the creative people (read SUCKERS) that write
music. ". . .and the [wo]man in the suit has just bought a new car
on the profits [s]he made on your dreams" Traffic- LSOHHB
I don't buy it. The NRA is not in existance to make grassroots
people happy or safe, they're out to SELL GUNS- they're a
MANUFACTURERS LOBBY, and are consequently not ususally working for
the best interests of the consumers, or everyday citizens of the USA.
Likewise, the RIAA cares little if you have good music to which to
listen, they would rather you have to pay brittney spears and O-town
every time you dub a copy of string cheese onto a "Music CD-R".
That's why those discs cost more, they have a tax which the RIAA
negotiated to benefit artists at the top of the game, and to tax the
consumers, who are assumed to be nothing more than a bunch of
copyright violators. Well, by taping taping-friendly bands, and
other non-RIAA music onto the CD's, RIAA is getting a piece of money
they THEY DO NOT DESERVE. The RIAA's low estimation of the average
consumer may be correct, but they still have their hands in some
pockets where they do not belong.
Before you say that there is NO ARGUMENT, why don't you try phrasing
your statement as a tautology, like "either the world is round or it
is not" No argument there!!! "its just illegal to sell music
without the owner(s) giving license." I can see why you would say
that, but if you think about actually collecting the pennies from all
the copying, wouldn't you be a better-loved musician if you spent
that energy making new music instead? Or do you just prefer to work
a scale job playing someone else's music, and you want to get paid at
the end of the day, so you take home your boss's arguments to try out
on a bunch of free-thinking recordists?!? Nice try, I like music
that changes from time to time, if you're out there playing the same
exact music every night (like a Broadway show for example) I can
certainly see why you would feel threatened that a live recording
could cost you money, but if you're a creative musician who is paying
attention to the other members of the group, and listening while you
play, perhaps you will notice that the free and minimal
cost-distribution of live music is something that a lot of new groups
WANT! It's free advertisement!
The RIAA is controversial, and doesn't need to exist, and I'll be
happier when it's GONE GONE GONE. Why don't you tell us all how much
they pay you to write this industry bulldada??
love tom (still in the fire suit, inviting public flames! I do not
like private flamings, if you have something critical to say, say it
in public so lots of people can take you to task if you're WAY OFF)
ps- if this sentence was in English I would have a better chance of
understanding it:
"its the money thing that bothers me. let me say it again: its THE MONEY
exchanging hands. why? im getting to that...selling them 'for cost' is
suspicious, but you know the difference between selling a show and selling a
tape is."

well, its clearly illegal to ever sell a tape of a live performance without
paying into RIAA, BMI/SCAP, etc. there is no arguement there. its just
illegal to sell music without the owner(s) giving license. i believe its
unethical, but im no ethicist. personally, i DO trade stuff on a 'dont
ask/dont tell' basis frequently. my gripe is NOT trading. hell, i dont even
care if someone stealths a band im playing with who wont give permission to
tape. if i see a big pair of croakies on someones glasses with wires down
his back and a bag on his lap--more power to you!! tape away! but dont tell
my boss--and give me a copy!
its the money thing that bothers me. let me say it again: its THE MONEY
exchanging hands. why? im getting to that...selling them 'for cost' is
suspicious, but you know the difference between selling a show and selling a
tape is.
ive received a couple nasty emails because of my beliefs. being labeled a
'anti-taper', a 'nazi' and a record 'label lackie' is unfortunate. if you
only
knew how hard my label (Rebel Records) is fighting just to stay afloat. youd
realize that all of us arent reeling in big Phish $$. many of the people in
bands traded on this board have day jobs. or living on $15K a year and
looking for a bimbo with a good job and a health plan to marry.

hey now,
so i talked about this online awhile back, and had a few bites, but this
time i've made up my mind, and am ready to go:
because of the upcoming baby in april, i'm thinking about selling my mics.
i have the 140/50's (the 50's are the hypercards). when i purchased them, i
got the skm150 kit (which is the km100 bodies, ak50 caps, active cables, x/y
and ortf mount) and a pair of ak40 capsules. each cap has a little jewelers
box, as does the kit. there is a chip in one corner of the kit's box.
everything else is pristene. almost always used with windscreens, to keep
the smoke out.
as for accessories, i have the wns windscreens, a t-bar, 2 AT shock mounts,
and an x/y shure mount.
if interested in these, let me know. i would really like to get about 2300$
for everything, and i'd pay the shipping. if you're really interested, make
an offer though. i have a ton of sample tapes in various applications,
including studio use. the mics are a little less than 2 years old.
previously, i had folks making offers on just the 50 caps, or just the 40
caps, etc. i will only consider doing this if someone else has made an
offer for the counter-part that you didn't want (i.e. if you want the 50
caps, i need to find someone interested in the skm140 part before i'll break
things up).
i'm quite serious about this, and have alot of upcoming exspenses to worry
about, so i'd like to get a deal worked out and ship these....so make an
offer!
thanks,
-brian

Subject: recording from the board w/ a Sony PCM-M1
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 11:41:59 -0800 (PST)
I typically like to record from a soundboard using a
Sony PCM-R500 home
deck. However, I will be on a business trip in
February and plan to record
a show or two in the VA and MD area. I have recorded
using the M1 in the
past w/ mixed results. What is the best settinging on
the M1 when recording
from the board? On the back, should it just be under
Manual or is the Mic
Limiter helpful at all. Any other settings, other
than the obvious
(recording levels) to be concerned about?
Thanks!

traded with. He had a very extensive collection of rock, especially the Black Crowes, at

Hi All,
Having just returned from NAMM 2002 in Anaheim, I can easily say the most
exciting news for tapers is the release of Apogee's Mini Me and Marantz
battery powered CD Recorder. It's great to see word is out and everyone is
so psyched. It is with good reason!
Apogee has assured us that they will be shipping our sizable order in 60-90
days, as soon as they are available. This unit is really cool. Feels
great, looks great, and we can all count on Apogee for the sound that made
them famous. Although we couldn't operate the show units, it promises
nearly everything we as tapers have wanted for years. For a full report of
the hands-on experience we had with it, check out our website
http://www.sonicsense.com
With Apogee's awesome pricing on this unit, we can hope to talk some sense
into Benchmark regarding the AD2K. It still has a number of different
features that the Mini Me doesn't have, but we gotta work on that pricetag.
Expect more info. on this matter soon.
For those interested in placing pre-orders, we are doing so now. For those
who are a bit more cautious, we'll have sample tapes as soon as we get a
working Mini Me in our hands.
Additionally, be sure to see that Marantz Portable CD-Recorder. This may
make the decline of DAT recorders a lot less painful.
We also saw some great portable equipment from Digidesing (Pro Tools) and
Steinberg.
At the show, we spoke with numerous manufacturers about lots of forthcoming
products. Give us a call toll-free to discuss any items not found on our
NAMM 2002 review at www.sonicsense.com/namm2002.htm
Happy Recording Everybody!

Here is your chance to own a Mint used Sony D100. It
has the same circuitry as the SBM-1, so you don't need
an outboard unit. It was cleared with a clean bill of
health by Sonic Sense 6/29/01 (documented if needed).
Just had the drum assembly, heads, capstan, pinch
roller, guide posts cleaned. The alignment was checked
and the block error rates tested too. Has not been
used, but once or twice since the inspection. All
documentation, boxes and accessories are here too, it
is complete. It is in mint cosmetic shape as well!
Will consider selling the discontinued Sony 7-pin>Coax
RK-DA10P cable with it for an additional cost. The
cable is NOT included with the price of the auction.
Here is what is included in the package: 1)Sony D100
DAT Recorder 2)Wired Control 3)2 Rechargeable
Batteries and Charger 3)Black case for D100 4)Power
adapter 5)Earbud Earphones 6)Original Box and
instruction manual. As with any electronics, item is
sold "as is". S/H is $25.00. Insurance is included in
S/H price. I can accept Paypal, MO or check. Check out
the pictures! Don't miss this opportunity for a great
deck! A+++!!!
