Anyone here using a USB to S/PDIF interface under Windows XP. Haven't had
much success finding one, though it appears the Edirol UA-5 does support it.

You made some very good points but if it wasn't
presented as a personal attack with thinly veiled
(and not so thinly veiled) insults perhaps it would
be better received.
I know Kip and although I may not agree entirely with
all that he says, I understand his concern and am at
least willing to hear him our or even debate him on
the issue. If you want to talk about the issue, talk
about the issue but leave the personal attacks aside.
They do nothing to help your position on the issue.
Plus, they're simply way off base.

I've got 4 great Phish shows on DAT that I'm ready to part with. I would really like to trade them for some good SCI shows.....In fact, if I can get 3 SBD SCI shows, I'll send all 4 shows for them! WOO-HOO! Here are the 4 shows I have:
1.) 11/11/95
2.) 11/20/98
3.) 11/21/98
4.) 10/8/99
If I can't get SCI (or Keller Williams) shows, B&P will also work. THANKS for looking! jameshelgerson@aol.com

ok, you are correct on one point--no one pays into, or receives money
directly
from the RIAA directly--but they do collect that stupid tax placed on audio
CDRs.
and true, they are onerous industry weasels. ive never seen any money from
them. so you have me there mr. president of the debate club. but i still
stand by
my statement that its illegal to sell a tape of a live performance
containing
copyrighted material without paying into BMI/ASCAP, etc.
>Before you say that there is NO ARGUMENT, why don't you try phrasing
>your statement as a tautology,
huh? unique application of the term tautology! someone just bought 'Logic
for Dummies'? when i said "its just illegal to sell music without the
owner(s) giving license.", that was not tautological, it was a declarative
statement founded on well known precepts of copyright law. trading, though
a greyer aea, is not part of this arguement.
>Or do you just prefer to work a scale job playing someone else's
>music, and you want to get paid at the end of the day, so you take
>home your boss's arguments to try out on a bunch of free-thinking
>recordists?!? Nice try
i play bluegrass. scale enters into the picture when i play the opry, but
rarely any other time, if ever. i grew up playing jamband rock, moved to BG
for the room the genre affords me for improvisation, and for the pure love
of
the music--not the money. sheesh. you must be kidding. if i was concerned
soley about money, i would be in some other music. or branch of the industry
such as owning a recording studio.
>I can certainly see why you would feel threatened that a live recording
>could cost you money, but if you're a creative musician who is paying
>attention to the other members of the group, and listening while you
>play, perhaps you will notice that the free and minimal
>cost-distribution of live music is something that a lot of new groups
>WANT! It's free advertisement!
im not sure any linear logic can be found in the above statement, but let me
redirect your attention to my original post(s) that either were hard for you
to comprehend or were not read: i PERSONALLY collect shows. i PERSONALLY
believe it has benefitted my band(s) to be recorded and traded, and i
PERSONALLY am not threatened. others are deal with that reality and be
sensitive to their beliefs--whether they are well founded or based on fear.
my posts attmpted (albeit nott as successfully as i'd envisioned) to
illustrate
that not all artists buy into "the free and minimal cost-distribution of
live music"
paradigm and that this ignorance on their part played a role in this
controversy.
for ex.: if tony rice, who IS financially struggling right now, saw someone
selling
his shows, he would likely NOT be interested in your free-thinking
libertarian
laissez-fairre approach to taping: he would simply wonder why someone who
makes more money than he does (ie a man with a recording studio), is able to
profit from his work while he (tony) cant afford a health plan. we here
might believe
tony is better off in a world with tape-traders exercizing our trading
rights, but
he may not agree with someone SELLING his shows. his difference of opinion,
although conceivably wrong, ill-founded, ignorant, and argueable, does not
give
you license to ignore his wishes and sell his product for what appears to be
your
gain. if you disagree, then the argument becomes: who owns the music? tony
doesnt have the financial clout to fight you, but what if DMB decides to
fight it out
with someone, perhaps with dat-heads or fednet? could they do something to
cripple dat-heads? sure they could. that is the real danger here. and the
gist of
my posts. all i asked was for some sensitivity and respect for THIS
community.
now--READ THIS PARAGRAPH TWICE! go take some ritalin if you need to.
also, be aware that a substantial part of a bluegrass musician's lilihood
comes from selling product. you wont see britanny spears selling and signing
CDs after a show. you will see del mccoury. and for some folks, these cd
sales mean the difference between making money and losing money on a gig. i
know of at least two people in bluegrass bands that are frequently traded
here that receive food stamps in the winter months. anyone who knows
bluegrass knows its no 'get rich quick'. so, while you and i know taping
helps a band, mrs. mccoury will be upset if she sees someone selling shows
of del and the boys.
note: right now theres someone on ebay with chris thile bootlegs for sale.
the artists believe it takes away from legity sales. whether or not this is
true has nothing to do with it. thats why so many bands are starting to
prohibit taping. jerry douglas, del mccoury, and others are fearful of the
loss of income. they believe they own the rights to that material.
>Why don't you tell us all how much
>they pay you to write this industry bulldada??
ive never made any money writing on this subject. ever. all money earned in
the music business has been from A.) public performance, and B.) sales of
CDs at shows. last year i did 143 shows. i got no thanks from the recording
industry.
btw: i noticed you make a living off musicians, tom. how did you pay for
Protools? you must make more money than me. but everyone in the industry
makes more than the musicians.
>ps- if this sentence was in English I would have a better chance of
>understanding it:
>>"its the money thing that bothers me. let me say it again: its THE MONEY
>>exchanging hands. why? im getting to that...selling them 'for cost' is
>>suspicious, but you know [what] the difference between selling a show and
selling a
>>tape is."
sorry (its 5 sentences, by the way). selling shows bothers me. and i also
posit that you know the difference beteen selling a recording of a show and
simply selling a used tape. one is ethical, and one is not.

Anyone have any live UFO from 1981 through 1983? The
"Paul Chapman years."
There are a few King Biscuit shows from then (St
Louis, Hammersmith, Chicago) and some other floating
around (Cleveland in 1982).
I have gotten a few off of ebay over the years, but
I'm tired of getting CD-R's from people who don't know
how to properly burn a disc! :-) (Clicks, dropouts,
repetitive digital defects, etc.) So I figured I'd
try DAT Heads...
Thanks loads!

This looks good, but reading the specs closely it appears that it won't
do 96 kHz over USB; it's limited to 48 kHz. At least it has an S/PDIF
output and takes a DC power supply.
I wonder what the price will be.

Went to see the Sun Ra Arkestra last weekend. I set up mics in the
audience. Taped the opening band fine but as The Sun Ra Arkestra was
warming up one of the band members said that they would not play until the
few mic stands in the audience came down. This was quickly re-enforced by
the soundman. If you go to tape stealth it! Space may be the place but
apparently they still enforce their definition of "copyright protection"
there. I wish Sun Ra was still around to give his two cents since most of
the tunes they played belong to him anyway.
Happy recording,

Subject: More Apogee Mini Me
Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 12:34:09 -0800
Good Morning Folks......
We just got back from NAMM 2002 yesterday as well. A great time as usual,
with the Apogee Mini-Me being the focus as it has been the past few days on
many mailing lists.
A couple notes to clarify some stuff I saw as I checked out the past few
digests:
- The unit will record 96khz via the S/PDIF and AES/EBU outputs, so you can
still get the highest resolution if you utilize a Digigram VX Pocket
until....
-A firewire upgrade will be available by the end of this year that will
handle 96Khz
-This unit can be run from a 6v power supply!
- They've made a very cool porta-brace-esque carrying case the the unit fits
into very nicely. All pre-orders will include this case at no extra charge.
We are going to start taking pre-orders TODAY on the Mini-Me with special
pricing. Give me a call for details or if you have any other questions
regarding this unit or anything else from NAMM 2002.
Be well,
Frank
