A school I work for just bought a brand-new DA-P1. I
have only used it to record twice, but both times it
would not unpack the tape. When I try to FF the tape,
it will run for a second or two, then give me and
"end" message. On both occasions, the tapes were Sony
DGCs. I unpacked the tapes on another machine with no
problems, and then the DA-P1 accepted them.
Anyone have any ideas why this happens?

Am I the only one that is tired of this topic??
This thread could go on and on.
We have seen nearly every angle and every side of this "subject".
Obviously, this "subject" has multiple facets and everyone has their own
unique opinions which seem to range from far left to far right and
everything in-between.
I think most of the people on this list fall somewhere in the middle. Most
people know what practices are considered to be acceptable and what
practices are not acceptable.
If someone steps out of line, there seem to be plenty of people to point
this fact out.
This "subject" seems to be directed toward the people that know what is
acceptable and what is not acceptable and they go ahead and do what they
want anyway.
Do you really think that you can reach these people??
The only thing that reaches these people is getting caught. Once that
happens, they realize that they have reached the point of no return in many
ways.
Would you trade w/ someone that got caught selling shows?
We honest tapers and traders have an unwritten code regarding these
activities. Once you break the code, you will have a hard time ever being
accepted within our inner circle ever again. I can assure you that there are
folks reading this right now that could attest to this fact, but we will
never hear from them because they are too ashamed to ever admit it in such a
public manner.
Many valid points have been made. Kip has made valid points that I agree
with and Tom has made valid points that I also agree with. I'll bet that I
am not the only one that feels this way. Sometimes, it's difficult to keep
things from getting personal when someone feels strongly about a subject.
But I have to say, I think that we have gone well beyond that point.
This "subject" requires individuals to take a personal inventory of their
actions and the ramifications of those specific actions. Like it or not, we
are all accountable for our own actions and the subsequent reactions.
After seeing this "subject" get batted around like a rabbit between 2
hunting dogs, I find it difficult to believe that someone would include this
in their post today:

you have done IMHO) and people are still going to do what they feel is
acceptable. You may or may not agree w/ their actions. Furthermore,
depending on the severity of what they have done, you may be able to take
legal action or inform those who can.......
This point counterpoint may have gotten through to a few people.
If so, that's great!
Isn't it time to take stock in ourselves?
The person that acquires a show, (burns it to disc, makes artwork) and then
sells it for profit is a scumbag!
We know you are out there and you suck!
Doesn't that say what any honest person on this list thinks to be true??
Isn't that what all this point counterpoint is really all about??
Can we PLEASE move on now?

This is why you picked the wrong battle. The original poster was not looking
to profit in any way. There is no profit when someone is unloading their
DATs for $2 apiece. The "trade for equivalent cost media" hoop jumping
rationalization is beyond ridiculous.

i've been looking for a decent stand for about a year now... the rediculous prices have kept me away for a while and i have used a sort of home-made one that goes to 14 feet... but i want to get a nice one now... does anyone know where i could look for these stands... i have tried many many diefferent photo stores etc... i'm hoping you guys can speak from experiance and offer a link to a place i might look for a stand...
is anyone selling a stand?...
i'd like to get one thats 13ft or higher if possible... and id really rather not spend a crazy ammount for it, like 200 bucks...

I can currently get a Teac DA-P20 for a good price, & I was wondering if
anyone had any battery solutions for this deck other than the sonic studios
pack that i saw in the archives. I know I've seen these decks around...
unit has the ac adapter included if that makes any difference. any help

Sound's great....now some one come up with a D8 sized firewire
harddrive that will accept a stream from this and we'll be in
24/96 buisness for the same realestate as a SBM-1/D8 combo!!!!

are a lot of those and i do not want to see our list going into that

I have finally decided to upgrade from my old Nakamichi based rig.
This is a great entry-level rig that has served me well.
I would be happy to supply sample recordings to interested parties.
I can also e-mail pics of the gear.
This rig uses 3 mics of various capsule combinations mixed into an unbalanced
L and R RCA output. It is very flexible and can get good recordings from any
venue by using and experimenting with different capsule arrangements between
the three microphones. The only thing you would need to purchase is a mic
stand.
The setup includes:
1 Sony TCD-D8
4 Nakamichi CM-300 mic bodies, batteries and hand crafted wood travel box.
(I bought one extra mic just in case)
3 Nakamichi Wind Screens
3 CP-1 Cardioid Capsules
2 CP-2 Omni Capsules
2 CP-4 Super Directional "Shotgun" Capsules (inc. PVC cases and wind
screens)
1 CP-3 VERY RARE Super Omni "Pinpoint" Capsule (in original case)
1 Nakamichi MX-100 three microphone mixer / preamp (inc. NiMH battery pack)
1 bound 15' XLR to 1/4" X3 microphone cable
1 3' Monster RCA to 1/8" cable

I would personally like to see iPod drivers to record audio from this
thing....why not go *smaller* than the D8? :)
Especially since Toshiba (apple's 1.8" HD supplier for iPod) just
announced 20 GB drives in the same size as today's 5GB iPod drives.
Hopefully it won't be too long before Apple upsizes the iPod capacity.

You don't want to read anything more from others, but expect
us to read 96 lines from you? C'mon, give me a break!
I think we may have reached the limits of people's
ability to listen to each other which is too bad.
(I think there are a lot listening, but they are
not necessarily those speaking.) I do agree with
Darrin that most people hold a fairly middle ground
practical.
Truth is, as difficult as this discussion may be
it is quite relevent. For sale posts are a significant
part of the digest these days. There also is the common
issue of getting musicians to trust tapers, part of what
Kip has discussed is the role that appearance of ethics and
just attitude toward tapers can play. In any case, I will
probably give this a day to play out and then summarize
what I think we learned from the discussion.
